Honest thoughts on King's Field?
Anonymous No.12155408 [Report]
I like it. Slow paced and tons of secret passages.
My personal ranking: 3 > 2 > 4 > 1.

Forgettable and vapid.

>KF thread
I dreamt about some non-existant King's Field game today. Not the gameplay but I saw a disc at some vidya store. I was like
>wait, I've never seen that one but I've played all of them though wtf

Probably the sloppiest dungeon crawler series which lead to the beginning of the Rollslop Souls.

I've only ever played and beaten the PS2 one. I understand the charm and the moody atmosphere (also great unique BGM) but ultimately not for me because it was too slow to play.
I remember reading the NPCs had the names of regular users in Agetec's forums in the English translation, lol. Niche gaming used to be pretty interesting.

The PlayStation can produce mind boggling effects.

I have no thoughts on it. I recognize the cover of the first game from rental places back in the day. I'll play the PS2 game one of these days. PS2 emulation is semi-functional now.

It's sort of an "anti-game".
The mazes remind me of staring at those maze screensavers as a kid. The moody, reverent, apocalyptic writing all point to a "spiritual depressed kid" conception. Bonking enemies feels the most simple direct aggression. This series is a storehouse of emotion and energy expressed through layout. Each element is placed with honesty.
3 and 4 were less honest.

It's fine if you can't see it but I can recognize the game for what it is.

You are very unskilled in talking about King's Field. Maybe try a thread that is more suited to your abilities or get more experience with the game. Hope this helps you make less boring posts in the future.

I like everything about them other than the combat. It's just a little too simple for how much of it you have to do. But I've only played a good chunk of the first and second games, so maybe that changes later in the series, or even in those games and I just didn't see it.

Rollslop is such an unfair term. DeS and DaS are completely playable with shields. I've never had as much success with them in subsequent games.
I wish we just got carbon copies of DeS over and over again, honestly.

I wish we could get more DeS and new games incorporated more mindful slower play and puzzle solving. Not even just Zelda style observation puzzle solving. I want to solve word riddles and logic puzzles and chess problems. Argue with a sphinx. Find hidden walls and stairs through subtle puzzles and patterns and words of unlocking. Use and combine magical items and lore. It's such a staple of classic fantasy

I want to do more than just kill in these games.

Insanely based post.
I think From could do it, too. That's the most frustrating part. ER made me believe that they could really knock it out of the park if they gave up the standard Souls formula for just one game and make a more traditional RPG with their systems, and all that shit you said would fit very well.

I love old games, but it's frustrating we've left things like that behind as technology developed.

They might be a little old but i suggest the wizardry games or any other popular dungeon crawler from the past (the CRPG book is a good resource, you can find it online). Even the map making was a puzzle. I feel like FS always focused on gameplay first and it's why they got so popular, so it might not be what you search for even in their early games.
One exception for me is Shadow Tower. It felt more polished and also had quite a smart level up system. still action focused though with not many non-action problems to solve besides orientation.

they're alright
I'd have rented and liked them in the '90s if any of the video stores had them. If I'd bought them I'd think they were too short.

mogged mightily by pic related. the PS1 just doesn't have powerful enough hardware for a dungeon crawler
