It has a sense of being overly ambitious and convoluted. There's a lot of interesting concepts introduced
>child soldiers with gradual memory wipe due to their training
>remote viewing of past events relating to a current war
>villain from another time who wants to merge all times together
>malignant moon in the sky that sends monsters to earth on rare occasions
But all of them are very shallowly developed when just one could carry a whole game by itself.

Yeah, I also suspected a lot was cut after Disc 1. The space section feels like something deserving of more importance, but you're not there for very long.
All the characters besides Squall (and maybe Seifer) have the depth of a puddle. But Squall as a protagonist is great, shame he has basically no chemistry with Rinoa. Their romance comes off a somebody's virgin fantasy rather than a believable, blossoming relationship. Most FF romance stories are terrible though.
Frankly, I don't like the game much overall, the only real enjoyment I got out of it was the RPG mechanical side of things.
