Just played through this for the first time. Skipped over it for years because I assumed it would be dog shit but I haven’t had this much fun with a sonic game since Sonic Rush for the DS. This game is extremely based. Not too hard to where you want to kill yourself, but not easy enough to be considered a kids game, 3D renders turned into great looking sprites, and a killer soundtrack.

Why does no one regard this as highly as other Sonic games? Is it because of the isometric perspective? Sure it’s a little clunky but once you get used to the games physics it’s a pretty good game.

Because it came out in 1996 after Mario 64. People had already moved on from the Genesis and the fact that the only Sonic game on the Saturn was also on a last gen system killed any remaining hype for the Saturn in America. If Sonic 3D Blast came out in 1994 it would be remembered as an all time Sega classic.

If you play it like other Sonic games you just lose your Flickies over and over again and then die
Once you learn how to roll to attack enemies instead of trying to jump on them, the game is a lot easier.

i had it as a kind for the Mega Drive. i loved anything '3D' (or that claimed to be) and yeah it still looks amazing.

didn't know people viewed it as this bad, black-sheep game, it's fun as hell. just more of an action-puzzle game, like Solstice.

one of the devs has a bunch of videos explaining the sorcery and decisions behind it:

Most of the reviews for the Genesis game were generally above average to good or great. Maybe like a 7-8.5 type of game or a B/B+? The game was designed for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive first. It's a neat final Sonic game released for the system. I had a copy. Most of the complaints came from the Saturn port which was released a little later. With disappointment that it wasn't the 'next gen' Sonic reviewers were hoping for. But for a Genesis - Saturn port, the reviews were also above average. The Saturn version does add the 3D bonus stages, some higher quality sprites and use of polygons in some areas. Richard Jacques soundtrack some high colour FMV. Travellers tales was on a role with licensed games at this point, They had The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse for the 16bit systems, Toy Story for the Genesis/ SNES, Sonic Team contracted them for outsourcing. They made this and Sonic R.
