I swear this board is just a bunch of contrarians trying to see eho has the least popular opinion. I want to hear a common opinion about retro gaming you actually agree with.

Mega Man series is a lot more important culturally and overall in terms of quality than society makes it believe. Considering the games are still extremely playable despite being 30+ years old.

A lot of the games held up as "Best game of all time" are legitimately good and deserving of the title even if I don't like some of them. For example, I think FF7 is probably the best overall entry in the series and great on many levels for JRPGs as a whole, even if I like FF6 and other games in the genre more personally. I don't like the 3D Zeldas over the 2D ones, but OoT is a great game in its own right and certainly an experience worth playing through to anyone, gamer or no.

A lot of Nintendo's games are accessible and well built, great games in and of themselves and there's reason they get tons of praise. However, those games suffer from the same thing anything with mass appeal does, they round off the edges and cut the divisive elements to appeal to everyone which means they lack the uniqueness or specialization that other games do. For example, anyone can like Mario or Zelda, but liking something such as Deus Ex or System Shock is an acquired taste. Yet those games produce die hard fans that love them for good reasons--it's just that they're not for everyone.

Halo: Combat Evolved has the best campaign

Timesplitters 2 has the best campaign

Knights Of The Old Republic is the better game (only terminally online midwits say otherwise)

Devil May Cry 3 is the only retro DMC worth playing

3rd Strike is the most aesthetic retro 2D fighting game

Kanto Pokemon are more iconic than Johto Pokemon

Games can age poorly. Such as tank controls and fixed camera angles.

Side-scrolling-beat-em-ups and Shoot-em-ups are inherently justifiably unpopular genres.

The SNES is better than the Genesis but it’s closer than most people would admit.
Likewise the generally agreed upon “best SNES games” you’ve seen on every list for 30 years now is absolutely correct.
Street Fighter has been ripped off and iterated upon for decades for a reason. It’s the best fighting game series and is the codex for the genre. If you learn to play World Warrior you have the base to play almost any fighting game and be half decent at it.
The best PSX game is MGS or FF7. Take your pick.
Wrestling games peaked with the N64 AKI titles.
DK64 is a lousy and boring game and a poor successor to the DKC games and a poor addition to the N64 3D platformer genre.

Mega Man X was the best in the X series.

Mega Man 2 & 3 are the best NES Blue Bomber titles.

There is a time to emulate and a time to play OG hardware.

Super Mario World is superior to SMB3

Super Mario All-Stars is a legit compilation with high replay value. Similar to BS The Legend of Zelda, aesthetically.

Cybernator is better than Metal Warriors

Clayfighters Sculptors Cut is pure hype train and not a good fighting game.

Robocop vs Terminator superior on Genesis but the SNES version had a WAY better retail packaging.

There's more. I just don't want to sperg out on the first go round.

Limitations have nothing to do with tech. Limitations itself is inherent to game design. Why do you think Chess uses a square field, with a square grid, discrete movement?

Technological advance didn't do shit. Because everything we have right now, is just a better PS1/PS2. Game design itself is a lost art, because casuals are the target audience.

Think about it, a casual food eater doesn't give a shit about the nuances of what he eats. He just wants his fries. There's no point in developing sophisticated taste because they will never appreciate it. To them, if a thing is alright it's good enough.

Meanwhile, Corporations use media and propaganda to drift away people with developed taste. For example, Quake was wine of the FPS genre, you can't just start playing it and experience its nuances. Now if you are a corporation, what would you do? You would use terms like, "next-gen", "outdated", "jank", to downplay the legacy players who have already developed a taste for good game design, you have to make sure casuals don't fall for their message.

You can't earn money from chess, because it's timeless. But you can sell a new COD every year, with a fresh paint. Modern games are junk food.

>Technological advance didn't do shit.
Chess960 and Chess 2 say otherwise. As well as Battle Chess.
Technological limitations are actually very important. You saw more creativity in developers, when they had limited resources. They had to use the technology they had in creative ways, to produce games that we didn't think were possible before.
You don't see that type of creativity, when the game can be 40-150+GB. Because you can just force the player to download/install massive amounts of uncompressed audio/video/data. There's no reason to be efficient with your code, or dive deep into understanding the hardware limits, to squeeze our just slightly better rendering through better compression and RAM clearing.

Silent Hill 2 is the best in the series.

Gamecube failed because the 1st party titles were terrible.

Eurojank is a real phenomena

The Gameboy advance didn't last as long because the hardware was fundamentally flawed.

Sega peaked with the Genesis

The PS2 era will never be retro.

>The PS2 era will never be retro.
Okay, grandpa. When the PS6 generation finally happens, the PS2 will be ancient. There's almost 2 full generations being born after the PS2(as the oldest Zoomers were barely out of diapers when the PS2 released).
/vr/ might still ban things after the Xbox/PS2/GCN/DC era, but that's not going to change the fact that the PS360 era is basically retro already.
We're only a few years away from the early 2000s music being fully considered classic rock.

MM4 introduced some new features. Which were cool but overall, the continuity between 2 & 3 cannot be matched, in my opinion. There are some /vr/ players that swear by MM4. X3 from my understanding was the last title to be produced for the SNES. Graphically, the game was awesome as it had chips that were unique to it's PCB. However, music, story, level wise, X I think it's the best, and the sales back that up. It's regarded as one of the best MM titles ever.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out is better than Super Punch Out.

Doom on the 32x sucks and sounds like farts.

Dreamcast controller sucks for fighting games.

Marvel vs. Capcom II was best on the PS2

Thor should have been a playable character in Marvel vs. Capcom instead of just a dumb assist character.

Aftermarket 72 Pin Chip converters sockets are too tight. Hell, most new clones pin sockets are too tight. I'd never put anything of valve in them. I'm always afraid of wrecking the traces on a valuable title.

Game reproductions are only acceptable for titles that were never released, region locked or translated, or any other rare, or competitive ROM.

X-men Vs Street fighter PSX port sucks. Best on Saturn or arcade.

Games are interactive and not meant to be slabbed, unless a rare demo, prototype, etc However, the ROM MUST be dumped an made accessible to the community, prior to slabbing.

NEO GEO hardware has always been overpriced.

NES Tetris is better than Tengen Tetris.

The Mega Buster in MM 4 is a good idea but the game tries to rebalance the difficulty by cranking up the HP of all the enemies and it kind of kills the flow. A fully charged shot doesn't feel powerful like it does in later games. It also does that annoying thing where the passwords only take you halfway through the game (sort of a moot point nowadays but you know what I mean). It's more polished than the first 3 games but it also feels like it's going through the motions. Oh and the music isn't nearly as good as 2 or 3.
The criticisms against 2 and 3 I see are basic bitch "8 bit is le unfair!!" observations (Boobeam Trap) or weird speedrunner autism shit. I guess 3 has too much slowdown or input lag or something...which I've never noticed in 30+ years of playing the game.
