Yes. They made the same mistake with Zelda 2 that they did with Super Mario 2 (The lost levels not Doki Doki Mario Madness). They took an easy game for children and betrayed the target audience by adding a mild challenge. People who want to have their skills tested do not play Nintendo games.

Making the candle the first item hurdle is INSANE. You start the game and almost right away you’re fighting invisible enemies. Yes, the only dark rooms you are required to traverse to get the candle are easy, but you will likely die tons of times in the hard ones before you figure that out. Also, before you get the healing spell, the risk-reward ratio to do anything is way too high.

The dungeons are a fun challenge, very tough but mostly fair. The overall game flow and cryptic NPC hints are just badly designed. The PC port improves this a lot without lowering the difficulty.

i loved that game so much back in the day. it was a huge departure from the legend of zelda and when i first played it i was unhappy but then it grew on me. it was fucking hard. this game is an example of where the term 'nintendo hard' came from. so, as you got better at fighting and solving the puzzles, it really made you feel powerful. you weren't just pushing blocks around and wandering the overworld anymore, you were in vicious sword fights with armored knights. it was an action game with just the right amount of rpg elements. only the best could get to the end and beat it.

i did it, but i had a lot of help from friends, family, and strategy guides.

Zelda II is discussed and discussed and discussed and discussed here. ONE PERSON complained (with good reason) about /vr/'s endless hunger for more, more, more digestion of the immortal question of whether Zelda II is good or bad. at a basic level it's very intriguing as an action game, feels like a translation of mario into action as much as it is zelda into a sidescroller. the way that actually plays out over the course of the game with different enemy encounters is another story though.

There's a fundamental difference between the top-down 2D games and the 3D games, but a lot of people are too mentally retarded to notice. And to be fair, they do use similar formulas. This is a good version, but because there is so much added and so many fundamental changes to the game, I would outright say that playing this is not at all equivalent to playing Zelda 2. If you only played Hoverbat's "Link is Adventuresome," you unironically did not beat Zelda 2.
