>picrel: you saved here
>congrats fucktard, you're locked out of the rest of the game, and all you can ever do now on this file is fight Mother Brain
why would Nihon do this? also post other BS "point-of-no-return" savepoints. (and yes i knew about this in Metroid but i probably saved when i was drinking.)

FFVIII and FFIX's Disc 4 saves. Once time compression or Terra's destruction happens, you're locked out of some quests, though you can still explore a lot of the game.

At least in SM's case, the game is fairly quick to beat so you can go through the whole thing in a couple of hours. It's not like you played for 20+ hours and then found your save locked you out of most of the world.

The one just before the last fight with Eve in PE1 stands out to me. I remember I was almost completely out of healing options after the museum and almost had to restart, but I pulled it off relying on MP healing after three tries.

Made a thread about this a few months ago, but I made it basically impossible for me to beat Arc the Lad II. The entire game was very easy, except for the last boss, who has an absurd amount of health and is suddenly strong enough to wipe out your best guys with ease. The enemies in the final dungeon don’t respawn, so you can’t grind either. It definitely did warn me I couldn’t leave the final dungeon, but I wasn’t expecting much of a challenge, and I definitely wasn’t expecting enemies to stay dead all of the sudden.

Nigga it takes me like an hour to get back there from a new save who fucking cares

If you didn't realize that was a point of no return, then you weren't getting 100% anyway.

no other metroid game has a point of no return except fusion, and that one gets removed after you beat the game

KOTOR 1 and 2 both lock you out of everything once you begin the final quests, though IIRC they do warn you that you won't be able to go back to the other planets once you go in.

I'm not familiar enough with FF8 to say if this is bullshit or not, but I always hated this about FF9. One of the most charming things about the game is being able to go back to old locations and seeing if anything changed, and in most cases there are indeed new things to do or at least new dialogue to discover, but in Disc 4 half the locations are just not available anymore. Worse still, there's some items and abilities you can permanently miss out on if you're not careful to get them in Disc 3, important ones, too (Vivi's -aga spells, for one).

As far as I know, it was a design choice due to disc size constraints. In order to fit all the ending FMVs in, some of the backgrounds and audio had to be cut.

I still find it annoying though, saving on disc 3 before those major events makes the save feel a little incomplete, especially because not everything is available to you until you go through them. Like on FFVIII, you can save on disc 3 and never be able to enter Ultimecia's castle but still be able to see the rest of the game or progress to disc 4, get access to the final dungeon, but lose access to most towns and other points of interest.

They didn't think of that shit back then. Even a long time after. The worst case of this is Dark Souls and Bloodborne. It literally sends you to NewGame+ without asking after killing the final boss. It's terrible

So? Why should I care you're crying like a pathetic little baby over a video game? Holy shit, how fucking fragile are you? Zoomers really are shitstains, they can't even handle video games without panic attacks?

You can use the spacetime beam to reset and go back to the beginning

this is not true. there is a secret hole that leads back to the elevator shaft. you can always go to find missing items or whatever. the game even heavily hints at that.

truly tragic in a game that can be beaten casually in like 2 hours.

I remember renting this game back when I was about 8 or 9, and one of the save files was in Tourian. IIRC it had a relatively low amount of energy tanks, so even when I managed to get to Mother Brain, I'd always get killed by her beam no matter how many times I tried, and by the time I gave up and tried to actually play through it, I didn't have enough time before we had to take it back. I didn't actually try to play it again until like eight years later on ZSNES.
