NROM NES/Famicom Games
In this thread, we shall discuss games for the NES/Famicom that do not use any enhancement chips whatsoever; just the stock 1983 hardware.
A complete list of these can be found here: https://nesdir.github.io/mapper0.html

Which of these would you say are the best and worst, and why?

Balloon Fight is the best pre-SMB game on the system. It's a fun take on the Joust formula.

I didn’t know there was a Famicom port of Elevator Action.

Its by Micronics. It plays as well as you'd expect one of their games to.

It will never not blow my mind that Portopia is NROM. Yeah I know this art isn't exactly breaking new ground and its not the longest game ever, but still, its an adventure game in NROM!

Oh shoot, I’ve never heard of them. I’ll go with Bomberman then.

Micronics are visionaries who brought us the Famicom ports of:
1942
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Athena
Ikari Warriors

and original classics such as:
Super Pitfall
Miracle Ropit's Adventure in 2100
'89 Dennou Kyuusei Uranai

If you've played any one of those, you have a pretty good idea of the level of quality we're dealing with. I don't want to derail the thread too much since its not NROM, but '89 Dennou is probably the strongest contender for worst "game" on the console.

>best and worst

I've had the best time with SMB of course. But I haven't even played a lot of them, and back when I was playing these in the 80s, I didn't yet have the appreciation for arcade games from the Donkey Kong era that I have now (I only quite recently developed any interest at all in working for high scores in such games). So I'd have to replay most of the ones I did try as a kid, to see whether I like them better now.

I don't really care what the worst might be.

I mean Super Mario Bros. beats the ever loving shit out of all of the other ones no contest. That's not to say that these other games aren't any good, I personally have always been really fond of Popeye, but the majority of these games are single screen, black background games that usually have stiff movement and are just about getting a high score. Then Mario comes along and has colorful and diverse graphics, complex controls with physics that still feel great, smooth scrolling, tons of levels and secrets, etc. It really can't be overstated what a revolutionary game it was.

Huh, Game Genie's in there. I wouldn't have thought of that, but I guess it makes sense.

Soundtrack in this is great but for I often hum Route-16 Turbo music thinking it's Mach Rider. Speaking of which, does anybody remember that Exidy arcade game, Venture? It's crazy how Route-16 was similar to that game with all these zoom-in rooms where you have to collect items. The original versions of both games came out months apart in 1981.
