around 2008 fighting games became obsessed with dramatic slowdowns, lengthy cutscene super moves and heavily increased hitstun, all of these things give you more time to recognize what's happening on screen so despite technically having the same frame data and thus general speed as earlier games, HD era fighting games take longer to actually play out

God, SC2 still looks incredible. Look at the detail on her costume and her shoulder piece moving slightly.
As much as I like SC6, there's something about it that makes the game look cheap despite its modern graphics and beautiful art direction. Like it lacks a type of polish that 2 has, and I'm not sure what it is, but I can tell whenever I play these games.
4 has a little bit of this lack of polish as well, just not as much as 6, both still and play great though.

you might feel this way because there's very few things going on mechanically. guard impact wars are also frequent and that changes the pace.
functional air control and 8 way run side steps add to the smoothness that sc5/sc6 ruined. sc is basically 2d street fighter with side steps now.

gameplay wise sc4 pre-update is the best imo. on the game's release throws beat "just" impacts. its basically sc2 without the guard impact trades.
its a damn shame they ruined that in the first patch, but at least all the dlc works regardless.

She's Dora, a character from Queen's Blade: Spiral Chaos. That animation is from the sequel, Queen's Gate: Spiral Chaos. The difference between "Blade" and "Gate" is that "Gate" uses licensed characters, like Ivy, Mai Shiranui, Lily (Tekken), Iroha (SamSho) and others.

I don't like the movesets in Soul Calibur II (its the most complicated of any Soul Calibur game and probably not necessarily for a good reason) and the Guard Impact system is the least intuitive.

SC2 is the only game that I believe had 8WR attacks that only worked in one direction (so Nightmare had unique attacks assigned to both 9A and 3A). I believe all the other Soul Calibur games don't care which way you're 8WR'ing if you're going to do something, it's always the same attack.

What he said is still true, bamco can't foster an esports scene on the same scope as tekken with SC so they leave it to die every time they release one and go "look, no profit". That said 3 is still my favorite, loved chronicles of the sword and I'm surprised nintendo hasn't commissioned bamco for a SC clone for fire emblem using that very same gamemode as a base.

My personal theory is that most fighting games on the 360/ps3 era got slowed down significantly due to how poor the latency was on early HD televisions, Smash Bros Melee didn't even have an input buffer it just processed the input on press, Brawl did and is a much slower game to account for it.

What we should really want from current fighting games is 120hz options being widely implemented, I know Samurai Shodown does it.
