The Japanese video game preservation society is out of money. The project, in which a white person in Japan buys rare Japanese video games and magazines with donation money and keeps them in a warehouse which only he and his friends are allowed access to, will close by September if they aren't given more money. Since they have a policy of not making ROM dumps of any games or scanning any magazines it's anyone's guess what will happen to the collected material.

These niggers need to take the material out of Japan and upload them if law doesn't allow them to do it. There is no incentive to donate if all they do is hold games in a warehouse

Ok. So they should donate their entire collection to the National Diet Library which properly archives everything, makes all of it publicly available, and will literally send you scans and photocopies if you fill out a request form. Some members in the government have been working on figuring out a way to do this with the games themselves so they should donate any games they have also.

The fact all they mention in that interview is that they back up a lot of floppy disks tells me they don't actually have anything good lol. Let them die, preserving video games specifically means letting everyone play them again and they aren't facilitating that. These games are no better off on this dudes hard drive than they are sitting in a random thrift store waiting for potentially anyone else to buy them.

All those "preservation societies" are like that, this one just isn't an exception
- "Video Game History Foundation" is sitting on a pile of source code, for example Aladdin
https://gamehistory.org/aladdin-source-code/
- "National Museum of Play" is sitting on another pile of source code, for example Blasteroids, Dragon Spirit, Hard Drivin, Vindicators, Pacmania
https://archives.museumofplay.org/repositories/3/archival_objects/19114
- "The Retro Collective" is sitting on a pile of Microprose pre-production floppies
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRz9kPdY3NQ
- "Games That Weren't" is once again sitting on a pile of source code

The Game Preservation Society has been struggling for like three years. Demian Rogers said back in 2021:
>I think people have this sort of idea "What do I get out of it? If I donate this money every year, what do I get out of it?" Unfortunely, what you get out of it, a lot of it, was only here in Japan. I mean, there was the things like the Summer events, which are open to members for free, the use of the archive, all of that is in Japan. But we can't do things like... frankly we got some people say "Hey, can I get a copy of this?" "Well, no, it's copyrighted, sorry." You know, we do have a little bit of leeway in making copies for ourselves and storing them, but obviously is not something we can really distribute. ... And that sort of limitation we're stuck with kind of prevents some people I think from being interested in supporting us, I feel. (15:51)

They keep digital copies, as well as originals with material. They've shared some of the tools they use to digitize old stuff.

It's kinda fucking bizarre to me how assmad a lot of you are about this company, I can only assume you have no idea how an actual archive actually functions. You collect the data, you try to preserve it in its original form but that's a fucking crapshoot of so many factors, there's a reason why paper is still the gold standard after all this time. Digital preservation has its own challenges, procuring the required hardware and software for some things is like looking for a fucking unicorn depending on the age and that age is not as old as you think, you're basically hunting ebay or other listings for ancient shit just like any other collector. What you do collect, preserve and transcribe/digitize you let people come in, access, study and, big keyword here, SOMETIMES let them reproduce and take with them because copyright/legal issues are actually a genuine concern for archives and you have to work around way more red tape with that bullshit that you realize

It's not the copyright concerns - archive.org exists, TOSEC, redump, no-intro, etc. Just don't touch Nintendo and Sony shit and you'll be fine.
It's the need for exclusivity. They have to dangle something in front of people to trick them into subsidizing those vanity projects.

>"Well, no, it's copyrighted, sorry."
Just let a bunch or Russian hackers inside and they will dump everything there is to dump and upload it on crypto-server in the middle of Thailand while admining it from somewhere in Siberia.
When somebody will start complaining, just tell them that you did nothing, it's those pesky Russian hackers who stole all the data from you.

Hey, I wrote this. You could've at least fixed the name. It's Damian Rogers, not Demian.
By the way, Rogers it's also known as suddendesu, and it's one of the few guys there who actually shares material.

1. Most emulators are GPL, and not available for proprietary licensing over copyright concerns. Besides, they're too demanding for consoles.
2. ROM packages have been done since the PS1 days.

Unironically games getting accumulated by collectorfags is better than video game presentation societies, because collectorfags are honest about what they are and will occasionally say "fuck it" and the games will mysteriously appear on torrent
>couldn’t be me
>must have been a second copy no one knew about
Whereas games preservation societies are not only hoarders, they’re hoarders that demand other people fund their hoarding for them
Better to get it over with and let the games bitrot now than fund these grifters until their grift is up and the games end up bitrotting anyway

I didn't say that you fucking retard.

This games are guaranteed to rot over time in their "museum" and they know that. If they cared about preservation, they would dump they roms and it would be an important part of the project.

It's the hypocritical reason they give for the people to support this project what is wrong.
This is not a people's project, it's their own personal project supported by people with good intentions that don't know better.

Again, fucking retarded child.

I don't have a problem with a personal collection being hoarded by an individual as long as he pays for it, he takes the benefits and the loses.

I have a problem with a project like this being fake and gay because I actually love videogames.
