Windows XP gaming thread
Got given this HP Compaq for free. It has a Celeron M and 512Mb of RAM (might upgrade these later).
Currently installed:
>Pharaoh
>Diablo (Dev. X)
>Diablo 2 (LoD)
>Minecraft Alpha 1.1.2_01 (Betacraft)
>Spelunky (freeware ver.)

I was thinking of trying to run Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, AoE, Stronghold.
What does /vr/ recommend? Dubs and I will install and try to run, even if the GMA 950 graphics chip shits the bed LOL.

I have a question - would a windows 11 computer with an integrated graphics card (can't put a graphics card in it) be better than a windows 10 computer with a fairly modern graphics card for emulating old games (4th gen and earlier)? Apparently windows 11 fixes some issues with polling rates for a mouse (of course this could be a gimmick to try to get people to upgrade especially as I didn't hear about it until I was searching for this stuff). Obviously neither system is going to be taxed by a standard SNES emulator, but might windows 11 theoretically reduce lags due to better/more reliable polling rate and similar?

Pretty sure it doesn't matter so long as you can run dxwnd, 86box/pcem, dosbox-staging etc.

What games do you have in mind to consider mouse polling rates as important enough?
Win 11 might introduce different lags due to it's abundance of parallel processes + good luck avoiding vibe-coded patches that may brick your PC anytime.

No one's mentioned Starcraft: Brood War yet, so definitely install that. Get version 1.16.1 or 1.17 at the latest since newer versions are just the remaster, and use a different engine your machine couldn't run.

ioquake3 runs like absolute shit on period hardware compared to vanilla q3.

The Celeron M is just a CPU. Integrated graphics at that time were part of the motherboard chipset.

Retro OSes are serious business. They can make or break OPs gaming experience.

You should play those games one more recent hardware with better contrast and less lag. You're just giving yourself a shitty experience for no reason.
