Ite enhances the atmosphere and greatly speeds up random battles. Every JRPG should have options to set party members on AI control.

Thankfully not, the ds version also has party chat so the party members are not blank states lime in the nes version.
DQ is a series where there is literally no reason to play the originals over remakes.

2022 with Treasures, game was supposed to be a Monsters game but the scamdemic fuck over the development so we got a half assed game, funny enough Monsters 3 was also a piece of shit, even more funny is that all DQ games post the scamdemic where shit except for the mobile ones like KeshiKeshi and Tacts, exception to the rule would be Champions which was shut down one year after release, never play it so I can't say anything about it but to parrot what japs had to say about it being extremely boring, Tacts was a simple little fun strategy game with DQ monsters still popular in Japan while long dead west side, while KeshiKeshi was a puzzle game with cute aesthetics, it was doing ok money wise but not enough for square enix to keep supporting the game, lasted like a year in the west and three years in Japan.

nah, dragon quest III is still best on nes/famicom. the later versions are prettier but ruin the balance and difficulty. they made 1/2 much easier too but in that case Id say its an improvement.

Love DQ4, specially the Torneko chapter, going to work and going back home until the sword of malice hits is comfy as fuck.
Don't mind the combat system, whenever i go against a boss I always pick the Hero for healing, Ragnar, Alena and good old fashion Torneko and they become a cake walk.
Around early 2010s a Jap managed to make each of the character AI play like the modern games, he send like a year with different combinations to do so, quite impressive for a Famicom game.

>charming cast of main party members
>overworld packed with treasure and secrets
>actually good dungeons that dont feel like a slog
>perfect pacing and level curve, besides the very start no grinding needed
>fun crafting system that is very beneficial to use but not at all necessary
>big titty redhead
>one of the best looking games on ps2
>beautiful orchestrated OST
>perfect balance of being mostly linear but having stuff to explore as well
>perfect 50-60 hour length

but if I had to pick the most important things that make it stand out Id say its pacing and level design. every other DQ hits a point where Im slogging through some boring cavern or doing some pointless fetch quest that makes me want to drop the game but VIII doesnt have that issue. if V had better dungeons and less slog, or if VII and XII were 50 hours shorter Id probably say theyre good too. if III had real characters or story itd be good. if IV didnt take forever to get your full party and didnt force AI, itd be good. I actually do like I as well because its simple and rewarding but fuck the NES version for its awful scaling, snes or gbc is much better. II is just straight up bad. havent actually played VI or IX yet so who knows maybe I would like those.

Do you see the basement 3 area here? You get down from the stairs and there's a fork with 3 doors. If you pick the wrong path you get a dead end, which means more random encounters, which can have rabbits that put your whole team to sleep for example, which is dangerous this early in the game. This area is a trap trying yo kill you, and you might have to go back to heal before exploring further. Anyway the HD 2D version gives you a fully revealed map of the area, so you just know there are 2 dead ends, and they put some chests to make you go there anyway. The rabbits aren't a problem either because you have two rousing rings at that point already and most fights there end in one round after you throw your boomerang. So you aren't exploring a dangerous unknown cave in fear of enemies anymore, you're leisurely following a map to check every corner for treasure (of which there's too many by the way) which completely changes the game for the worse IMO.

In the context of early 1990, the AI companions are awesome.

For an NES game, they're even more awesome. Especially the fact that their AI isn't set and that they can actually learn by doing, in other words, the modern definition of AI.

The western version had improvements to the AI like picrel

I'm not a bad JRPG player like so many of the retarded zoomers here, and yet even for me DQ4's AI often pulled moves that were more effective/suited than what I would have done. In other words, if someone complains that the AI is retarded, I don't buy it.
I can understand wanting to issue your own commands though and there is a game genie code for that.

The only bad thing about DQ4's auto battle isn't with DQ4 itself but with all the copy cats that followed and wanted to imitate that and did a poor job at it, like Natsume's Chaos World.

>Doing business with such a ridiculous country is really frustrating

Basically saying everyone has to endure the censorship because of America

With that said that is lazy design. You want to censor it for Americans, then censor it just for the Americans, like they did in the NES days. No need to bring everyone down to their level.

Well except from that, the AI is pretty good.

And even with that taken into account, one time I did force myself to use Cristo through chapter 5 and he didn't use the insta kill spell THAT much against bosses; also when it hits during random encounters it's actually a great help.

the AI gimmick works a lot better in DWM for GBC
idk why, but i never even hated it there, i even used it willingly a lot of the time, even outside the tournament matches. felt kinda cool how you had these unruly monsters that would throw whole tournament matches single-handedly because you left em on the farm too long

To beat Keeleon just now I had to keep reloading the fight with the try out tactic until Mara would cast sap, then switch to defensive otherwise Nara would just keep trying to put the boss to sleep. But that makes Mara never use her offensive spells, only using her weak attack. Only reason I'm not installing this thing
>>12163771
is that I wanna judge this game by how it actually was, but if my next boss fights are an RNG fest again I might reconsider. I wouldn't go as far as the OP and it's cool they experimented but this wasn't a good idea.

I like IV but needing a degree to figure out how to make Brey cast Bikill on your party members is instead of normal attacking a boss for 1 damage is retarded. I feel Enix noticed how shit this was at the last minute and just made the royal crypt spawn liquid metal slimes like crazy so you can easily just out-stat the shitty AI.

The AI learns the strength of weaknesses of each enemy after fighting a certain number of combat rounds. If you get a party wipe then you get warped back into town but the game still remembers how many rounds you fought so on the second attempt the AI will do the right things. Stop using saves and reloads (there aren't even savepoints in dungeons) and play it the way its meant to be played.
The system only fails against the final boss because each of his many phases counts internally as a different enemy.

I swear she once used sleep 5 rounds in a row. But I do admit it works really well against random enemies.

>Stop using saves and reloads (there aren't even savepoints in dungeons)
Keeleon is in the castle, there are no enemies you can just teleport there. He's also the first real boss you fight in chapter 5 with a team, let's see what happens when I get to others but I'm probably not playing any more today.

Wow this has nothing to do with Brey's unwillingness to use Bikill in boss fights, and any other buff and debuff from other party members too. Good thing there's a sword that just lets the hero use Sap themself otherwise nothing would get done.
