I only played ryza before(and a little bit of sophie 1) so i am neither too focussed on the turn based part or have seen any of the really fun alchemy systems from what i see people saying.
But Yumia's alchemy is somehow even simpler than Ryza 2 and 3 and its combat system is also a lot worse than ryza 2 and 3s idea of an active combat system. way too little feedback on what's going on.
Just mash all the buttons that aren't on cooldown, hit the dodge whenever there's a red flash and you won't die. and once you have big consumables just start with those and everything dies.
I also just found the party quite boring. I enjoyed group of childhood friends having adventures in their backyard and watching them grow a lot more (tough, to be fair, ryza had 3 games worth of shit. though even just 1 was more interesting).
It's saving grace is that i like ticking off checkboxes so having a million question marks on the map at least kept me busy.

There’s a lot to explain but here goes.
The series is kind of unique among JRPGs. Emphasis is on exploration and item crafting instead of story or gameplay. The series is known for having tons of SOVL - the art, music, and gameplay are all excellent on every entry (or almost every entry, a lot of people grumble about the new ones). The item crafting mechanics are incredibly dense but have been becoming simpler over time.
If that interests you, there are a few good starting points. The series generally is made up of trilogies of connected games, but the trilogies themselves are completely disconnected, dividing the series into sub-series. The games that begin sub-series are Rorona, Ayesha, Sophie, Ryza 1, and the brand new Yumia. As those games move along, they become more fast paced (combat wise) with Ryza 1 moving to ATB from turn based and more story focused and easier. Early games in the series have time limits that can intimidate new players but aren’t really that bad if you know what you’re doing. There really aren’t any bad games in the series and you can get away with starting with a game that’s not the first game in the series, many start with Totori, Escha & Logy, or Sophie 2. If all this is overwhelming, just go with Ryza 1, it was designed for people knew to the series to get your feet wet, and then if you like it you can branch out elsewhere.

The games peaked on the PS2 with the Atelier Iris games. It was not a chronological trilogy. They were set in completely different worlds, with a different alchemist that just happened to be named Iris.
You mainly played as the male protagonist.

These spun off into the Mana Khemia series, which was like Magic Alchemist School. And then again, further, into the Ar Tonelico series.

These were all a 2.5D artstyle, until GUST started developing for the PS3 and switched to 3D models that looked nice in screenshots but the movement was janky as hell.

From that point on the Atelier games devolved into pastel puke and boring ass slice-of-life yuri narratives

Also Marie, Judie, Iris 1, Mana Khemia 1, and Lise. Of those, Marie, Iris 1, and Mana Khamia 1 have English versions, either through official channels or a fan translation.

That said, only really Mana Khamia is good as an introduction. Marie is pretty primitive and Iris is more of a regular JRPG and loses some of that Atelier charm. And Mana Khemia isn't entirely like the other games, but it might appeal to you.

Marie did get a remake recently but I don't like the art style. I played the fan translation of the PS2 collection instead and had a good time with it.

My thoughts after one good extended Yumia session:
This is not Atelier. This game has nothing stylistically or mechanically in common with Rorona or Ayesha. It feels disconnected from the series' past even in a way that even Ryza didn't.
It's still a good game. If this is what the series turns into, I think I'm ok with that. It resembles Ubislop but it's better than that in a multitude of ways.
I'll keep playing and as the alchemy gets more complex maybe I'll warm up to it more.

Is it just me, or are attack items and bombs not very good in Lydie and Sue? At least compared to buffing characters and pumping them with big dick skill damage traits?

Bombs were pretty nice for like 90% of the game, but now that I'm at the lategame and fighting against all them bosses, character skills/follow-ups seem to have more damage mileage than just chucking stuff at the enemy. Items seem to be more suited to debuffing the enemy and buffing your actual damage dealers.

You can actually throw away the Pastel of Unity in Lydie and Sue's true ending after making it, and if you proceed to the game ending without it, the scene actually changes to: "OH FUCK, DID WE LOSE THE PASTEL!?" and then Honette proceeds to die since you're back on track to the normal ending if you do things this way.

L&S really has more attention to detail than most Ateliers.

My favourite part in Iris 2 is Viese retracing Felt's Journey, but this time as a conventional Atelier Heroine and laughing off all the prior obstacles Felt faced due to being much more prepared with a bunch of Alchemy haxx in her bag. I don't think any other Atelier game since then had as much emotional impact has Viese discovering Felt's petrified body and completely mentally shutting down when she discovered that she couldn't heal him. Like fuck man, these two characters were shouldering the emotional weight of the whole story till this point, and when they finally get their long overdue reunion, Viese only ended up meeting his stone corpse (at least as far as she was concerned at the time).

I also really like the dynamic between Felt and Chaos. "Literally just the main character, but dealt a bad hand in life and forced into evil" is one of the most tried and played out RPG tropes ever, but I love it all the fucking same. Actually, in general, recent Ateliers have been holding back in creating explicit rival characters to the protagonist, and I wish they get back to it.

Viese also has an attack where she fucking melts and insta-kills enemies into raw elements to use for her alchemy.
I mean, shit, beating up enemies and desecrating their corpse for materials is standard fare for an Atelier protagonist, but literally disintegrating enemies and reducing them to raw elements while still alive is a special kind of ruthless. Good thing Felt is a loyal family man kind of guy.

Yeah, those are some good scenes. I also really liked "What's the deal? You told me we would save Rie!" "Rie? I don't know any Rie." I had seen something like that coming, but the actual moment still hit hard. Chaos really was a great rival character, especially once you find out more about him. And that last-minute backstory between Paracelsus and Erasmus really made me want a game about those two, because I'm a total sucker for two characters that are close but forced to opposite sides of the conflict.

Nah, Felt had as much talent as Viese when it came to alchemy, but he's kind of a nerd jock that prefers being on the field and bonking stuff with a sword.
Lorewise, he learned the fundamentals of alchemy as quick as Viese did, but apparently he has too much ADHD to actually properly sit down and read a fucking book. He has a knack for smithing though, and its implied that part of the reason he's such a damn good blacksmith is that he integrates some alchemy principles to his process.

Honestly, Felt and Viese may have been the prototypes for what Logy and Escha would've ended up becoming, with the latter doing the conventional item based alchemy in cauldrons while the former does equipment based alchemy in the forge.

I don't Atelier evolved at all after Totori. It seems every game after that was the same shit with different characters. The game became more streamlined and suffered because the difficulty of Atelier are suppose to be the time limits. Rorona was the last game where it actually mattered.

Atelier Iris 1 is my favorite in the series. It was the first one I played and fell in love with it. I've stuck with every game up until Sophie 2 and at that point I was burned out and bored. I played 3 hours of Ryza 1 and it didn't change my mind.

Getting close to the end of my Escha playthrough. Not quite sure how I feel about this game. There's a melancholy with knowing this is the last real time limit game, and the gameplay loop has been my favorite part the experience but it also feels way too easy. Escha's cute and Lucille is cute and Threia is hot but the characters just don't feel memorable like they did in Arland or even Ayesha. I'm used to games where Katla would be like the 5th most entertaining character, not the first or second. Game needs more Wilbell too. To add to that, the only songs I've really gotten stuck in my head are the world map theme and the homunculus jingle. i guess in summary this is a good game but I feel like it could have been better. We'll see if the ending/postgame/Logy playthrough changes my mind.

It's kind of hilarious how Shallie Plus casually glosses over the fact that over the course of the years after the events of her game, Ayesha has resurrected Yggdrasill's corpse (but not the ego of Yggdrasill itself) and is now using it as her personal familiar for when she wants to murder someone extra hard. Ayesha fucking recreated the mindless corpse of the final boss of her own game through her own crazy plant alchemy and made it a murder slave that obeys her every command.

It's true that Atelier has never been on par with other games developed by Gust, not even the first three Arland games have the same level of fan service as the EXA_PICO games (I haven't played them but I know that's the case) or the first Blue Reflection (which I've played) but I don't think that it's fair to say that the Atelier games after 2015 are very sanitized or something, it's not like we are talking about the Zelda franchise,that one really is a franchise which has rare instances/examples of fan service and isn't known for that kind of content.

Just beat Ayesha, and I quite enjoyed it. I didn't know this one had a time limit, so imagine my confusion when I was minding my own business only to get jumpscared by the game deciding I was finished lmao. I did rescue Nio at least, and did Juris's ending quest, but that's about it. That's what happens when you dilly-dally, but that also feels in-character for Ayesha.

Looking forward to the next one. It feels good just sitting down and playing some cozy slice of life RPGs, bros.

Atelier really is one of the few games that remains turn-based, along with Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, Disgaea, Fire Emblem and rare new IPs like Metaphor: Refantazio and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33...Almost everything else has action combat now for better or worse...at least ATB combat but a traditional turn-based combat system? Yeah, that's being left behind...

I don't plan to get the most recent Atelier games for several reasons but if the next game really is turn-based (like the Mysterious games and the Dusk trilogy for example), welll...we'll see what reception the game gets when it's released.

Gameplaywise, alchemy is drastically simplified and the weird pseudo action gameplay is pretty braindead, so if you come in and expect even a little thinking, you will be sorely disappointed.
The world is nice to look at, though it suffers a from collectathon cancer since you need to run to map icons and do simple minigames a ton to get stuff for exploration upgrades.
