Yeah. The worst part is how the devs have no passion for Calvard. You could tell with Erebonia that they were pretty enamored with France and Prussia and Alsace, but with Calvard they just dumped in modern twitter USA politics and France and called it the day.

Trails of Cold Steel 2, followed by 1 and Reverie.

1 got me thoroughly invested in the characters and Erebonia, and 2 was very atmospheric starting with Rean alone in the mountains and then hiking down Toval and going cross country in occupied territory. Reuniting with characters was emotional. The mech duels were climatic. The enemy raiding Ymir and taking Rean hostage felt high pressure. Talking to the enemies humanized them, and then you had the cool and high pressure escape sequence. There was some Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 coziness as you got an airship and were let loose to go do some adventuring. Vulcan's suicide was sad. Schmidt was an interesting character, though you get better exposed to him in CS3. The duel with Crow atop the Infernal Castle was climatic, and then you had the final battle in which a hero actually died. Then you had the impactful twist that it was all for nothing, everyone was conned. Evil won. But now the cold war has escalated into a hot one and Rean has to fight for a man he hates in order to protect his people from being destroyed and impoverished by the archenemy. So you have this bittersweet ending where evil won but life goes on and the people adjust. You get a melancholic feeling in the final last outting episode as your friends have graduated ahead of you and moving on with their lives, living an angry Rean behind.

I enjoyed the setting, characters, mechs, combat and character building, and the mechs.

Perhaps the runnerup game I liked was Reverie, mainly for the Rean and C main story routes, where you just get undiluted high intensity action, particularly Rean chapter 3 which is the best in the series. Every other Trails game is hamstrung by having lots of NPCs updating and available to talk to, and sidequests to do, which bogs down the pacing. Reverie wisely restricts how many NPCs there are available to talk to (except for any time you can visit Crossbell City) and there are no sidequests during the story. So you get more time spent on plot. It has a climatic final chapter with the threatening of world war, the music in babel, the final confrontation and then C stepping out of the teleportation portal. You also got one last ride through a dungeon being able to mix and match your favorite characters. It could have been the actual ending of the series. I wonder if it will be more satisfying then the ending game we will get in a few years from now.

I also liked the second half of FC for the tension and the plausible secret coup story that was happening, and how party members naturally came and left as their motives and circumstances deemed fit. However, I did not like the top down view at the rocks, the boring kingdom of Liberl, the meh combat and character building, or the boring first half of the game. I also did not like Estelle.

They just go too far with it to a point where I wonder what my sorry ass is even doing there if every other character is gonna have the cool moments. Having a villain tap dance on you in round 1 isn't uncommon but it's generally meant to act as a motivation and sense that you go stronger. Ys does this a few times across the series. Hell sometimes if you're good enough you can even win the initial encounter but in any instance you still manage to power up and slap the guy back twice as hard later on.

Being a Trails villain would be a dream job.
>You can pretend to be cool all the time, even if you heroes beat you up in a fight or thwarted whatever task your were supposed to carry out. You just get to stand back up, say "haha, well done" and teleport away while the heroes are frowning and shaking their fists angrily at you.
>No matter how many times you fail to guard an objective or carry out a plan, you will never get fired or demoted from whichever evil organization you work for. Did the secret base get discovered, raided, and blown up while you ran away? No biggie. Did your boss get killed when you teleported away later? All good. Giving away critical information to the heroes? Whatever. Come on back to the airship to chill in the lounge and drink champagne while awaiting the next assignment to volunteer for.
>You get handed obscenely expensive experimental mechs or extremely rare magical artifacts to play around with, with no downpayment or interest fees required. Got that huge mech blown up? Whatever, come on back and get another!
>Is your evil organization disintegrating? Have the protagonists become too powerful? Not feeling your occupation anymore? Good news! You can just change sides! Today you fight B with A, tomorrow you fight C with B, and then the day after that you can inexplicably change to team A. The best thing is, there is zero accountability! You can kill the heroes' beloved family and friends, but the moment you stand with them in one fight, the protagonists will act like you are brothers. No Bracers or cops will try to arrest you for mass murdering their fellow policemen for the lolz or firing artillery at skyscrapers, and whatever evil organization you worked for won't send hitmen after you to close potential information leaks!

I mean there is the whole secret evil society of spreading drugs, raising child soldiers and committing general acts of terrorism but I do agree in the sense that nothing of narrative significance has happened for any party in this series. I can sit her and grouse about the heroes never getting allowed to shine but the villains are generally just as ineffective which makes everything all the more galling.

I don't really need the characters to be out for screaming blood and vengeance. But it would be nice if they at least registered the betrayal as a betrayal. Forgiveness is a virtue but not like this. It's even worse because he's the ring leader. Characters like say Renne who did a lot of bad shit but were victims of things outside of their own power is one thing because they're victimized child soldiers who were forced to do bad shit. There are certain contexts and ways to make villains redeemable. Crowe was not one of them. And honestly even putting every bit of this aside I kind of just hate that he even is the big bad ring leader in the first place. It's just dumb. I know Japan loves their central characters to be super young but it's dumb. I do not buy that he was smart enough to pull this shit off and I do not buy that he was strong enough to pull this all off.

I can buy him being a competent mech pilot (enough to become the NA's Azure Chevalier on the Western front) and a successful spy for Rufus and Vita at Thors who took a train ride to Heimdallr and used an auto-compensatimg rifle to kill a guy standing out in the open. But yes, being the head honcho of a terrorist group at age 19 is a tough sell. There were 12 year old ensigns in the navy ordering men around, but they were on ships of hundreds of men and not at the top. Realistically in CS1 Crow might be a squad leader underneath Vulcan or Gideon.

What does edge have anything to do with it? Her presence in Ouroboros makes little to no sense given her backstory. She has no "inner darkness". She has little to gain from working alongside most of its members. Hell, the story never even goes into why or how Ouroboros recruited her in the first place.

The Erebonian history side of her backstory makes very little sense as well. I understand her abandoning her nobility because she was barren and had no way of continuing the Sandlot bloodline, but what the hell was she doing in the 200+ years between the of the War of the Lions and becoming an Anguis? How did she even know that Dreichels would reincarnate as Osborne? What kept her from taking more immediate actions to stop Ishmelga?

None of my aforementioned questions are answered in a satisfying manner.

And then there's her entire raison d'etra in the latter half of the CS arc. Evidently, her whole plan was to try and win the Rivalry herself and the pull what Rean, Crow, and Millium did in CS4's bad ending; she would sacrifice herself and vanquish Ishmelga once and for all. I used to thing this was pretty dumb on its own, given that Arianrhod had plenty of opportunities to ally herself with strong, well-intentioned characters and go out on a better note. But then Kai no Kiseki happened, and it made her look even dumber, considering that Ishmelga's rise to power meant jack shit for Zemuria's overall future. If the Great Power tried to act up, Laegjarn Chest would just activate and reset everything.

So yeah, I don't like what they did with Ariarhod.

Cold steel works fine as an entry point - the series is chronological, but Cold Steel 1 and 2 are seperate enough from the earlier games (Different country, largely different main cast) that you'd be fine just playing those (though of course some references are going to go over your head). CS1 or Sky1 are the usual starters.

Mostly narrative stuff is what you're going to see complaints about.
The issues largely come in with Cold Steel 4 and Reverie/Hajimari which is essentially Cold Steel 5.

This is where they REALLY try to stretch the plot as thinly as possible. Characters fall harder into annoying cliches and very little actually development happens. If any at all. Characters barely have any agency of their own and all exist to orbit the MC in ways a Persona game would call excessive and well... yeah, it's basically a lesser Persona game filtered through a battle harem school light novel.

Ignore the fan cultists like >>3773415 who have been sabotaging this franchise for the past decade. They are all at the bare minimum above average JRPGs. You can't go wrong. Pick whichever one appeals to you the most. CS1 is holistically one of the four stronger first games in the four arcs. Fun combat and character building on hard difficulty. Don't let the name intimidate you. The difficulty is frontloaded but once you grasp the mechanics you can beat the game on hard or even nightmare as your first Trails game. It has very enjoyable characters, cool setting, great OST, above average English dub, and an overall engaging 90 hour long story that only sags a bit in chapter 6.

Sky is only a 50 hour long commitment, and the second half of the plot is very engaging. However, the first half of the story is boring, the combat and character building is unengaging, and it is a top down game where you are staring down at a lot of rocks and grass and dirt. The OST isn't as good. However it is still a very good game.

You're also in smaller parties for most of it - usually 2 or 3 people at a time as compared to having a full team almost ubiquitously in the latter games - that does have an impact in making even the simpler combat a lot more challenging.
>and it is a top down game where you are staring down at a lot of rocks and grass and dirt
And like... pretty cities and ancient temples and beaches and fortresses and etc all with little details everywhere that you can look for because you can rotate the camera. This never was an issue for me - I like the Sky maps a lot, the loss of camera control going to Zero was a pretty jarring thing that took a long time to get used to.
>The OST isn't as good
That's pretty arguable - it's more a matter of personal taste. Both are very good. There's a lot of Sky pieces - even just from FC - that are favorites. The Zeiss theme for example

It's easy to laud Trails when the competition is near nonexistant. Most JRPG dev teams either disbanded or got broken up or just outright stopped making JRPGs during the 2000s. The Sakura Wars/Valkyria Chronicles team doesn't make turn based JRPGs anymore. Square hasn't released a real mainline Final Fantasy in two decades. Atelier abandoned turn based. Xeno comes out infrequently. Atlus and Yakuza games have niche appeal. Aquaplus has begun dipping their toes into making higher production value 3D turn based JRPGs with Monochrome Mobius, but are inexperienced. That just leaves Trails as the only turn based JRPG series coming out regularly, and they are holistically good as far as providing 100+ hour long experiences with good aesthetics, music, a functional battle system, etc. No catastrophic failures like certain other much more higher profile JRPG releases.

And then as far as serialized JRPG stories go, again little to no real competition. Sakura Wars? The story ended in 4 and then the series was axed by Sega. Suikoden? Konami ousted Murayama and the storyline never reached Harmonia. Visual novels? The genre is borderline extinct and Aquaplus is having difficulty transitioning to higher budget 3D JRPGs to continue their story. WRPGs? GW2's storyline jumped the shark with Icebrood Saga and then had a mediocre conclusion with End of Dragons. WoW? Impenetrable to newcomers, and the game is fundamentally not well structured for the storytelling the devs keep endeavoring to tell. FF14? Writing swerve after Stormblood, the main plot ended, now it is stuck in mediocre writing hell attached to boring gameplay. Gacha games? Some of the stories are pretty decent like Granblue Fantasy, but the live service business model just dilutes the story experience in so many ways as opposed to having box purchase games like Trails where you get all of the characters, there is an actual ending for each game, etc.

>why is this series impossible to discuss
Because there is quite literally NOTHING to discuss about it. It is one of the most shallow over written over long game franchises ever made. Falcom has done nothing but pad out an already stock standard story and set of characters for over a dozen games now and between all those titles there's enough actual meat and potatoes to fill out maybe a third of that in terms of meaningful content. There is nothing to say about the series and even the alleged FANS of the series just want to use it as the same lunatic friend simulator that other crap series do or they want to gush about OMG TOWA!!!

>and they are holistically good as far as providing 100+ hour long experiences with good aesthetics, music, a functional battle system, etc.
They're not! And maybe if each title wasn't trying to be 100 hours of mediocre to bad fluff and instead actually focused on telling a decent and proper story with decent and proper characters we might have actually gotten somewhere a long time ago but we've been stuck in a rut to were the franchise as a whole has become stagnant and has remained stagnant.

I think Falcom are completely incapable of writing a villain that doesn't "lose" a fight, reveal they were holding back the entire time (bonus points if they then effortlessly btfo the protagonists in a cutscene) and say something cryptic about "The Plan" while chuckling and teleporting away. I've never bothered with the games after Sky for this reason, especially since people say it gets even worse after Sky 3rd

Let's elaborate a bit for the sake of clarity. We'll, for the moment, concede that yes, "THINGS" do happen. The pressing and major issue however, is that even when "THINGS" did happen, it wasn't typically something that was worth waiting an entire trilogy OR LONGER of games to justify. Nothing in any of this games has been worst the time cost investment. There has been nothing new, interesting or original enough to make any of this worthy. Every plot point, character arc or twist has been so agonizingly routine that most other RPGs would have resolved this before a certain number of disc swaps. The extended run time did not benefit any of the characters, story and trying to say it was all for "world building," which is the common praise, shows a hilariously dull understand of how that works because it's world is a kitchen sink where new technology is introduced almost whimsically with the only explanation being "LOL ORBAL" as if that fucking means anything. This is not comfy. It's boring. It's shallow. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some edit in here were you could truncate a lot of the bullshit and make something half decent but as it is it's just not good.
