Kingdom Hearts thread
Playing through 1 again right now, God these games are great. Some of my favorite character designs of all time.

First game was pure kino. Not every game needs sequels. Imagine if this series ended after the first? I feel like it would be more people’s favorite game of all time constantly being talked about for eternity. Nothing to taint it’s image

I'm pretty fond of Chain of Memories, both the GBA and PS2 remake. I suppose they ported it to other systems now.

The only things I don't like about KH1 are the amount of enemies that have a move that makes them invincible in some way and they can spam it to waste your time, and the other is just how it feels like enemies move back so much causing your combos to whiff. Aside from that, perfect.

I am almost done with three, and it was pretty good thus far. I am not sure if it's because I am older or what, but the heartless don't give me the intrinsic fear on a primal level that I had when I was 15 playing the original. This entry didn't have the impending sense of dread ONE ,chain of memories, and two had. 365/2 and Birth by sleep didn't have it either.

Chain of Memories is basically a KH roguelike.
Shame normies hate the card combat which I think was great and unique. Though if it was turn based it would be much cooler, just like Slay the Spire (inb4 haters)

Gonna play 3 for the first time, i was planning to do a proud playthrought, then a 2nd playthrough on critical to completion+ remind
Is this how i should approuch it?
Or is 3 on Critical easy enough for a 1st playthrough?
I beat 2 on critical+ data fights and Terra long ago so it's not like i'm a complete newfag

3 on Critical is fine, especially if you choose the option that gives you Second Chance and Once More (though they changed the names) before level 25. Main reason not to do it on your first playthrough is it makes a lot of the enemies a slog unless you're spamming summons, but if you're the type to do a fair amount of grinding while exploring then it'll balance out.

>>3772559
Forgot this; one major warning about critical on 3 is that the areas are much much larger than 1 or 2. Because door transitions are what give you checkpoints, it's much easier to lose 10+ minutes of progress if you aren't careful. Double back to save points often.

GBA Chain is a great ride when you have the hang of the system, aside from some awkward mobility with some bosses.

>>3772061
I'd argue the Heartless' creep factor had a VERY narrow window, End of the World and Castle Oblivion really. Most of the others lose the monstrous aesthetic in being theme after their worlds, and by 2 your characters are too powerful. 3's final world is actually the first game since the first game to try to double down on it.

Nobody plays KH for the disney part tho

That said honestly a proper FF+Disney would have the characters visiting each other worlds not just random cameos of FF characters in Disney
Anonymous No.3774744 [Report]

KH1 is kinda rough around the edges and all of its superbosses (aside from maybe Kurt Zisa) kinda suck, but you can really tell they put their all into making it and it's really charming in spite of its flaws.

Later games kinda feel like they're trying to ape a lot of what KH1 did, but while going through the motions. The Ansem Reports in KH1, for example, are collectibles, but it's also implied that Sora is actually gathering them and reading them (aside from maybe the three Final Mix ones) in order to refute Ansem's world view at the end of the game. In all of the other games, the reports are just random lore notes tucked away that are never discussed. Ven just suddenly gets a letter from Xehanort to Eraqus after leaving the Land of Departure that outright shows Xehanort was setting Terra up to fail, but this has no bearing on Ven's experiences nor does it affect the way he sees Xehanort.

>make Final Fantasy/Disney/OC crossover
>original game wasn't perfect, but at least tried to combine Disney and OC plot, with some FF here and there
>later games cut out the FF almost entirely beyond the magic system and just turn the Disney worlds into promos for their movies, with only the OC content being meaningful

Most of the bad habits had already set in by 2, really, but as the first sequel (THE sequel at the time) that can be somewhat excused, and it still tied up all of the important loose ends to that point. I wonder where we'd be if the series followed the mold of Ys or Zelda and Birth by Sleep was a standalone, distant prequel sort of thing.

Thats one of the major selling points for the KH series. If people wanna play an RPG without the Disney shit, there's a niche indie franchise you may or may not have hear of....

So why do KHfags have such a problem with Marvel and Star Wars representation? How is shit like Tron and Pirates fine but SW and superheroes going too far?
Anonymous No.3781312 [Report]
>>3771570 (OP)
I unironically owe a lot to the first three KH games. I would have never gotten into JRPGS if it weren't for KH1 and 2. I wanted to know where Cloud, Squall and Vivi came from, so I played FF7, 8. & 9. Then got into stuff like SaGa, Shadow Hearts, Wizardry, Tales of, Ys, etc. It's shame how quickly Kingdom Hearts died after DDD.
Anonymous No.3781349 [Report]
>>3781277
I presume being live action in of itself isn't the problem, it is that Pirates and Tron are Disney properties (or at least Disney-first productions), while Star Wars and Marvel are relatively recent acquisitions, so they're different. This can then spiral into an endless discussion of how much of Disney's "original" movie catalog is adaptations of newer and centuries old stories to begin with and if there are any real lines in a crossover series like this.

Enemy design I feel like peaked with 2 and just went all over the place since. I also don't really understand what the Heartless are supposed to be and how they really act. Like, are they just supposed to be like Pennywise where they look and act cartoony and goofy to lure people in or are they supposed to be feral monsters? What about who controls them, are they more like dogs or like goofy incompetent mooks? Specially after 2 where it seems vauge on who really controls the heartless their personalities seem all over the place from fighting goofy villians to seriouse threats.

Because TRON and Pirates are actual original Disney properties while marvel and starwars aren't and have also had the pleasure of being completely milked and shit on to death.

>Go to the watch and clock store to adjust your clock keyblade
>Go to the antique store to find... something relevant to my esoteric plans, I'm sure

I had forgotten that your party will endlessly grind the Fransokio train lines if they land on them. I had landed next to the tunnel on the edge of the map and Goofy turned around and seemingly went down the entire track before finally coming back to my location. Some of the little things in 3.

I'm the Beast poster, that depends on if you want a rundown of the series progression (spoiler free of course) or want to play it through blind for yourself.

>Ys
Another long-running JRPG series that has usually self-contained plots. I was wondering how Kingdom Hearts might have ended up if it told mostly self-contained stories.

Worse level design/exploration
Worse story (2 is when the story of the series becomes bad)
Worse pacing
Inferior tone/atmosphere
Magic is even less balanced

Even the felated combat system doesn't actually get better than 1 until near the end of the game in FM

I always thought that the purebloods were akin to the undead and consume whatever they can. The Emblem Heartless on the other hand act like whatever they were modeled after.

>What about who controls them
False Ansem/Xehnort's heartless controlled a few, while most act on their own accord and wander aimlessly.
