Depends on what you disliked about RM1. The structure of the game remains the same throughout the series, and the game engine is also re-used (also for Tales of Innocence DS inbetween RM1 and RM2). RM2 and 3 are just beefed-up versions of RM1 essentially. More characters, better stories, more skits, more content in general, slightly improved/tweaked battle systems.
For whatever it's worth, I didn't like RM1 much at all but loved 2 and 3.

i picked thief so my character swung their weapon in a flimsy way. it's hard to explain but it looked weak like it shouldn't have hurt the enemy.

Do we know if Arise's budget was higher than Vesperia's? On one hand that game had daddy Microsoft's money, on the other it has been 17 years hasn't it? I'm currently replaying it, up to the spooky ghost ship on our way to Desier and I have to say, even though I always ranked it pretty high I had forgotten just how well made the party interactions were. Everyone bounces from each other perfectly, there's not a single dull moment. The cities are neither too big nor too small to explore and get a feel for their 'theme', the soundtrack's as good as ever (that bass). While not perfect and not my favorite, I have to say it's possibly the best example of the Tales game that feels the most 'complete', and it'd be hilarous (read: hilariously sad) if newer titles did less with more.

Let's be honest, writing is hardly the most expensive thing in a game. Stuff like graphic fidelity and HD assets, actor moccap and cutscenes are SUPER expensive. I don't like Arise either, but even the Skits are 3-D on this game.

He immediately gets into a pissing contest with Hubert over who should have control oh Lhant when he first gets there when Hubert is 100% in the right saying that he's more qualified since he's spent the past seven years studying and training to be in that position, as well as Lhant being completely reliant on Strahta's military at the moment so Asbel couldn't be an effective eader for the town anyway. The fact Asbel rises to his goading and fights him rather than recognizing the reality of the situation and stepping down in order to support Hubert shows upon his return it's all about his ego. And when the plot moves on from that, it forgets to properly interrogate his behavior and make him reflect on it. Same deal with getting mad at Cheria for treating him coldly when she's well within her rights to do so, it all gets swept under the rug and everyone moves on extremely quickly from what was a traumatic event that changed their lives. You've got Aston with good intentions but horrible choices due to the feudal lordship he must manage and his own biased past with his brother. You've got Hubert, who becomes a great man and leader under the worst of circumstances and bottles up his past and the people he wants to lash out against.... even Cheria herself, who due to her sickness was almost entirely dependent on Asbel and co. as her friends and childhood crush yet one day was left alone by no fault of her own and everyone around her abandoned her/left/died. It's a general issue with the writing of Graces, it's like they attempted to tackle heavier subjects involving growing up and childhood mental/emotional trauma or whatever but this coming from the devs behind Rebirth's exhilarating "racism bad" plot which you know, it's a fine story on its own for a JRPG but once you try to go more nuanced with the characters and the power of 3D cutscenes and whatnot... fell you either write better or it falls flat. For me the impression I ended the game with was that Asbel was an immature manchild that remained largely static in terms of growth and development and received next to no repercussions for his actions. Like you say the Childhood arc was the best, there's little issue there because it's all characterization setup. Asbel is a retarded kid but he's just that, a kid. He has flaws, he madkes mistakes, he's set up to fail in a way so he can get back up and grow/redeem himself into Adulthood. The big issue in comparison with a characters like Luke is that once Richard gets back in contact with him it all goes downhill. Asbel isn't given more time to pick himself up and truly grow as a character, he's instead rewarded immediately after by getting the chance to run back to his fujo prince to find purpose there. That moment where he seemingly lost everything should've been a BIG character changing moment but it's handled so sloppily that all its weight is lost almost immediately after. Asbel remains the dense manchild he is, and when challenged by the story he seems to be told to stay the same and keep doing what he was doing beforehand because the power of friendship and anime will solve all. The game can have him questioning repeatedly what's worth doing at different points in the story and yet he keeps winging it instead and keeps winning but without the charisma and determination that made Lloyd doing the same work well in that game's narrative framework.

Hearts is all about staying airborne. There's a hidden value for enemies ironstancing out of combos, I forget the specifics and can't find the site that I initially found it on, but basically it punishes spamming the same arte. Anyways, none of that matters as long as you're in the air. The enemy can be on the ground, but you have to be in the air. Also, you can't let your party members hit the enemy you're comboing from the ground either. So any arte that gives you hangtime is premium and artes that are ground only are kind of ass unfortunately. Beyond that, it's just having a lot of EG and getting crits (which restore EG), and utilizing the OP connect panel artes to deal damage (Roni's Spiral Driver)

It's just another gameplay mechanic like fringing Craymels or using FoF circles in battle. The idea was neat, it's just that the execution left a lot to be desired because Colette is still clearly the intended option (her Flanoir scene in the OP, her starting with extra affection, her occupying whatever spot the intended person would in that lategame dungeon where each character confronts their fears and are helped by Lloyd so if you end up paired with say, Sheena or Presea then Colette randomly appears in their spot next to Zelos or Regal which doesn't mesh at all compared with the clear Genis/Raine, Zelos/Sheena, Regal/Presea). Other games back then like FFVII or FFX tried similar things, with similar results.

It's close enough with the artes that it doesn't really matter imo. They honestly don't have that many artes that are exclusive anyways. The strike ones do slightly more damage if all the hits hit, and probably the strongest reason you'd have for going S is access to Grave Blade - but that does require you to 1-grind the shit out of FDF and 2-keep them set up with earth damage weapons/Ruby/quartz/etc. to even use it. Nothing changes in terms of Unison skill options either.
But as I said above, the T skills are massively better - you'll 100% want to end up on those.

At the end of the day, what you want from Genis is to eventually get Concentrate - which is a mix of T and S skills 3 T and 1 S - anything else is going to be worse, cuz that effect is the best and most of the ones contributing to it are also good.

In terms of spells, S tends to (but not always) do a bit more damage with the mid level spells, but are usually harder to hit (Spread vs Aqua Laser for example). There are good high level spells on both paths - S gives him access to Prism Sword which gives him (pretty strong) Light damage and Absolute which is the only high level Ice spell. T on the other hand has Tidal Wave which is great for groups, and of course Explosion and Indignation for big damage.
There's a strong argument for mixing both sets. But if I had to pick one, I'd lean T - access to the unison skill Prism Stars is really good.
And you get Meteor Storm either way so like... do whatever really.

Prism Stars is good but Holy Lance is a much better spell than Ray. Raine and Genis also interfere with each other due to the spell queue mechanic too, so you tend to want to prioritize spells with faster animations to stop them from locking each other down.
