Are the Ar Tonelico games any good?

They're kind of a spin-off of the Atelier series. But with less focus on item synthesis.

The second game had a lot of bugs, and some parts weren't even translated.

The 3rd game came out as GUST was abandoning their 2.5D style of games for 3D. So it looks and feels really awful.

And finally, there was Ar Nosurge. It doesn't have any excuses. It's just bad all around.

There is a fan patch that supposedly fixes all that shit, but I haven't tried it myself.

At Tonelico does have a fucking awesome soundtrack; you should listen even if you don't play the games.

do you like games with a focus on developed and interesting characters, a 10/10 soundtrack, and amazing lore and world-building? If so, then you will probably enjoy Ar Tonelico.

Are you also a deluded retarded with no sense at all and whose only baseline of quality is shitty harem anime? Then you'll love Ar Tonelco

You're confused and thinking of the modern Persona series. Ar Tonelico spends time investigating the reyvateil's motivations and personalities.

It spends time asking the MC-kun to kiss their boo boos and dress in pretty costumes.

yeah, that too. and I'm ok with it.

I played the first AT, it was ok but not good enough to warrant sinking more time into AT2.
My advice: go with the Atelier series instead.

I get that feeling, but AT2 is actually really good. Arguably the only good one in the series. Just unfortunately you have to do the fan patch because otherwise it's bugged to shit and back.

I'm kind of in the same boat. AT1 was really cool, had cute girls, great music (even the non-Hymnnos stuff), and absurdly detailed lore. Problem was the gameplay was a chore and you didn't need to delve into the crafting mechanic at all to beat the game.

Is the JP release still bugged? I can read JP so I'd rather just play it that way if it's not broken.
Jakuri's incredibly flatness has me interested in her game.

that a bit of an exaggeration. yes, there are a few instances of untranslated lines, but they are not important, it's usually just characters greeting eachother. The only major thing is the boss attack that locks up the game, but even that is difficult to encounter unless you are playing the increased difficulty challenges. on a normal play, that boss will die long before using the particular attack.

no. the japanese version plays without issue.

I only played Ar Nosurge Plus on my Vita since I knew nothing about the series and was looking for an rpg to play. It was kind of generic but I could still appreciate the setting, the god tier OST, and bits of the story and lore. I could tell there was a lot more to the world because it hit all the right notes at how major it was.

My problem was there was more dialog than gameplay and spending an hour crafting because there always needs to be a cutscene for every item you make and you had to make them twice for both sides of the story. Game should have been a VN.

It was a VN, the game you and I played is a sequel. Confused me to no end at the start. Loved the game though

Ciel nosurge Offline's English fan translation actually just released.
I've waited to play it for so long. Now I just need to resoft mod my PS Vita and remember how to use it. (there's been tons of great fan translations and ports and stuff, lately, so it should be worth it at least)

Nope. They are all low-budget trash.

2 is really great. Though Nisa did a terrible job translating it and actually introduced a bug into the game during a boss fight that crashes your game. Luckily though the game is easy enough you can smoke the boss before the game crashes. Otherwise the game has a great story, characters, music, setting etc. It's way above par for gust.

1 is also very good. But not quite as good as 2. It's more generic in general. I love 1s box art though it always makes me nostalgic.

I've never played 3 because I didn't have a ps3 and it's never been ported to anything else. AR tonelico was great and gust is still alive and kicking. No idea why we haven't seen remastered collection yet for the series. They did several for Atelier trilogies...
