Skin color is a choice of a weak, beta man. High testosterone males use a race choice, instead. If you have a fantasy world, you might have it, but if your world is Earth+ = just use your typical races. Black, Asian, whatever. This is instant reactivity if you're not a pussy because everybody in the world is actually racist. Your game is set in 60s USA? A black MC gets called a nigger, but he's not as scared to walk in a black neighborhood district. And a whitie gets robbed. If your game is set in Asia, everybody's who's not exact flavour of Asian gets called a laoguai or whatever. In fact, if your game is set in China and you want your MC to be asian, you can make the racial choices to be Chinese/Vietnamese/Japanese. Trust me that's a lot of reactivity potential, right there.
There are racial cliques everywhere - at school, in the army, at work. People of the same race are generally more predisposed to each other, and vice versa. A black store owner might tell the info to a black guy without a skill check, or he can tell a white dude to fuck off.
And it affects more than that. For example, my game, Hotdog's Goon & Gone, takes place in Chicago, one of the most segregated big cities in America. There are entire districts which are practically monoracial, so, naturally, MC's race affects at the very least there they grew up. So yeah, use race.

Player can headcanon their eye color, but they cannot headcannon people's reaction to their style. You played cyberpunkdreams? When you're dressed up, you can choose your general vibe - are you a punk? A cowboy? A slutty piece of twink ass? If your setting is a school, your choice of style basically defines what clique you are. Emos go with emos, jocks go with jocks. But it's not just rigid options, it could be different sides of a coin.
Example - in a merc game, the MC can be either cool (leather jacket, dark glasses indoors) or practical (an armored vest 24/7, a gun holster making server girl shit herself). Traveling swordsman can be rugged (gets kicked out of a tavern, but bandits consider him on of their own), or elegant&noble (gets bitches). In Hotdog's Goon & Gone, a game about men in office suits trying to survive and get paid, the choice in appearance is binary too - you're either scrappy or slick. Because there's so little options, I can make sure any MC fits the game's vibe, and also add reasonable reactivity to both of them.

A quirk is something which visibly separates your MC from the average joe. Albinism, for example. Or a tattoo. Not vetiligo, if you don't want to get laughed at in the thread. Doesn't need to be flashy. Can be ugly, too. *THAT* would 100% separate you from 99% of cog WIPs, if not all of them. For such a bodypositive company there is a huge aversion for MCs which traits what aren't traditionally attractive.
MC of my another WIP (two more weeks), Crows, has a quirk which makes them self conscious about their appearance - a lazy eye, a hare's lip, a burn scar. It doesn't affect too much, you just get different flavors of self consciousness and get different nickname from tsundere-RO, but this one choice matters more than all the eye colors you could code in the game. Just make them personal, important to the story. It's not *just* a tattoo, it's the tattoo the MC got to commemorate their dead best friend/dog/favourite cartoon, whatever.

If you give your player a choice of a body type (you should), it will affect the MCs capabilities. A ripped guy will always be stronger than a noodle, unless magic/tech is involved. A fat guy can be confident about being overweight, or he can have a complex. Your body is 100x more important than the texture of your hair.
Don't forget women have boobs, too, and they think about their own boobs a *lot*. More importantly, men look at boobs a lot, too, so, I don't know, it matters too. My point is let me select a boob size in your cyoa. Make a dick size selector, too.
>Continuous changing in the appearance
Batman Arkham games have Batman get more damage on his costume the farther the story progresses. You can make a similar thing, or take it a step father. Pull a Kaneki and make MC's hair get gray from the stress. Give the chance for the MC to get a new tattoo with army buddies, like in Starship Troopers. It can also be used reflect power progression/moral choices. DoL has animal/angel/demon transformations if you do a thing (mostly fuck animals) too much. Nero from DMC has a devil arm, then a mechanical arm, then a spirit arm.
In Curse, my Jujutsu Kaisen-like, one of the ability paths involves replacing body parts with doll limbs, with the potential to turn MC into a living automaton.

People are genuinely scared to do this, but it's perfectly fine. Most games don't have a character creator. Books, by nature of being books, don't have appearance customization, period. So yeah just have a fixed appearance for the MC. That way you can design them to be in line with other characters, stylistically. Hotdog from Hotdog's Goon & Gone is always the cute-ugly one. Crows is a story about a family with distinct visual style, so the MC always has black hair and pale skin. It's fine to not give the player a choice and tell them, "fuck you, it's my story, I know what I'm doing". You just need a reason.

Finally finished playing Lords of Aswick.

You can uh...you can definitely tell it was a very early 'COG' game. It's very rough around the edges and simplistic, mechanically, which is something to say about a text game. But the writing? I liked it.

My guy, Leofwyn, ended up doing pretty good, I'd say. Beat the frogman king in combat, became an earl, rescued the bastard son, married the merchant girl and got a son named Godwin out of her. When the king died, I supported the bastard, beat the girlboss queen and the baron crew, then I got Stayvun to create London and strip the barons of power.

In the end, it was said that I was seen as a 'Kingmaker' whose lineage went on to history, and then something about how one of his 5th descendants ended up being ultra-mega-important (I'm sure that the author will totally make a sequel after doing such sequelbait and definitely not get a job and abandon it)

Why would I do that? The bridge was burn-burned when they did a surprise ban, saying they'd been having nonstop issues and not bringing it up with me once. As far as I knew removing the discord link closed the issue, then received a ban 7 months later without being informed that it was still a problem. Jason's a good admin (Dan is eh), but the chances of publishing with CoG is 0. I'm a poison pill for them and they're untrustworthy for me.
