Sorry to break it to you, but all of those all of those are, in fact, quite barebones. They don't have much of a narrative to actually speak of, meaningful (read: not "If you don't have Y, turn to Page 69 to die') C&C is not a thing either and the "mechanics" are largely just a primitive trial-and-error crutch to bloat read time with fake replayability. Sure, all that had to do with the issue of gamebooks having to be actual physical books and stuff, but that won't really make them age any better and actually worth playing. Fabled Lands at least had the novelty factor, even if the actual realization is typically disappointing.

My main complaint with it when I read it a while back was A:the childhood arc seemed to be a bit too long and, more importantly, B:it seemed to resolve the whole "Bastard child of Arthur" subplot pretty fast and neatly. Maybe drama happens in the future to make it a problem again, but it just seemed too neat and clean. Especially since it's still while you are a child.

They've are the old classics, and you find some cool stuff there. They crawled so others in this genre could wobble in a horny manner, but they are really held back by being physical flip books that can only contain so much text. They are not flawless. Of course that doesn't make interactive coyas automatically better, they often fall into the opposite problem of having very little choice or game in them, but they don't suffer the limitations of a physical medium.

I got to chapter 4 with the Dragon as a gf, are Merlin's daughter and the bully good romances? Overall it was interesting but felt incredibly disjointed, the californication of Arthurian legend aside. Sometimes it felt like a perfect young Mordred simulator with burning some kid's face off and then it was just some nonsense about Galahad autistically staring at you, Gawain wanting to be your friend and whether or not Arthur or the other Knight beginning with A gets custody of you. It started quite strong especially in regards to Morgana's relationship with you which, whilst still having some strong points later on, seems to drop off in favour of side characters. I am not saying she should be the only other character outside Arthur but you stop feeling like you are being groomed to be a warlord when the tournament arc begins and other people seem to start to matter. Is it worth continuing if Chapter 4 will get rewritten anyway? I personally think a Morgana romance would be very cool.
