What RPG has the most strategic or tactical gameplay?

FFT didn't grab my interest. Does Tactics Ogre have more going for it? I played OB64 so I'm inclined to try anyways.

Not much better, if you dislike fft. Personally I like both and like to luct much better.

Going by first impressions, I will like Tactics Ogre better. Though the PS1 version has lag, and I'm currently burned out on strategy games, so I'll leave the game for now and purchase the remaster when I'm ready to play.

Neither FFT or Tactics Ogre. They're extremely slow paced, basic, grind heavy games that have damage sponge enemies and boils down to just walk around the unit you just attack to hit them in the ass over and over.

Maybe Fire Emblem especially the Kaga developed ones

Probably the pathfinder or divinity original sin games. Don´t get me wrong, i absolutely love tactics ogre and FF tactics, those have enough job varieties and all that but as far as i´m concerned there is not really all that much strategy to them. At least on the other games you have to be smart about your limited resources, be it the builds you make, the type and number of spell uses or the party compositions. Those things would really make it or break it. In some you can even take advantage of terrain and whatnot.

Meanwhile in tactics ogre most strategies basically revolve around choosing the most advantageous position and which units you take out first (plus how you counter laws in the case of FF tactics). It´s still strategic but i guess it´s far simpler.

that's a red flag for me too.
i want perfect imbalanced design; not perfectly balanced design like a coin flip (which is boring)

also "card draw rng mechanics".
if I want to play MtG I'll play MtG, I don't need it as the RNG/dice mechanic w/color of every RPG now.

The remaster has issues, but is my to go version. Unlike fft. Here's emulation the way to go. If you want to complete luct, finish the six temples and the bonus dungeon before the way of no return. The six temples are needed for the special class and the bonus dungeon takes around 15 to 20 h. You can skip that part entirely, but this locks you out of the post game chapters, like 10h of story content. Else there's not much to say, except the blue cards are key to beat bosses. They are always overleveled, overgeared and outnumbering you. Maybe make the male main a melee class, else the 1:1 battles are near impossible to beat.

I haven't played FFT (I tried it on an emulator once but it was frustratingly slow and the controls weren't great) so I don't know how it compares to Tactics Ogre. But what I can say is that Tactics Ogre is a great game and one of the very few Jap games I have played that actually had a decent story. It's fun having three paths to choose from with differences in available characters and missions.

Pacing, story telling, emotional beats, everything is extremely well made for a super famicon game. Story in fft is good, too.

The kaga games don't have weapon triangle
RNG is manageable
Though I agree without RNG it would've been much better, but needs to be designed properly too

You can always tell who couldn't understand tactics games for children by their opinion on FE weapon triangle. If they call it a game of "rock-paper-scissors" or something like that, assume their opinion is worthless.
WT is +/-1 attack and +/-10 hit in the game you most likely played (GBA). It's fucking nothing. And all SRPGs have RNG.

It's more than +10 or -10 to hit because of 2 RN though. It's more valuable or more damaging the further away you are from 50%.
Anonymous No.3820316
>>3820312
I mean, sure. It's just not that important though. Casual players have his perception that the triangle is like effective damage (x3 multiplier) or like anti-air in Advance Wars or something (Anti-Air will fuck a B-Copter no matter what you do), when the effect is actually rather small and can often be ignored/brute forced.

Gameplay seems too slow for the amount of strategy it offers. I might try again later with the remaster, if it speeds it up. It apparently has turn order visible at all times, and that's a step towards better design.

Tactics Ogre One Vision is peak. Its so good that they remade LUCT. Don't play the remake, play the romhack on the psp. Every class is viable.

>>3820093
FFT and TO are very different. TO has bastion skills so that your tanks can actually tank. FFT has blowing people up with dual wielding. I am not going to accuse you of having played neither game but your post comes across as thus.

>>3820096
pathfinder's combat is mid- there is no intentional design to it, its a bunch of sourcebook slop slapped together. Good quest though. Divinity is good but I dislike that its a bunch of weirdo elementalists instead of traditional classes

if you want a deep cut TRPG try Dungeons of Neheulbok. The story is goofy late 90s webcomic humor but the gameplay is very solid. Game plays like a CRPG when you aren't in tactical combat.
