NPCs infused with ChatGPT
When will we get RPGs with NPCs powered by ChatGPT? Where instead of picking between three lines of dialogue you could just type whatever shit.

Carisma would become a player skill and not a character skill at that point. Or maybe the NPCs could be affected by some in-game charisma check, like the voice of you r character, their look and clothing.

Why? Maybe every NPC could have a personality and background. So maybe one get angry at certain things or another one like to be flattered. You could write certain rules for every NPC like a janitor.ai character

Talking with NPCs is already the worst part of RPGs, I don't want to extend that experience with a bunch of meaningless AI generated filler.

this is like the "talking to npcs" equivalent of the westoid mindset of "make battles fun by making you do warioware minigames during them." much like that mindset towards battles causes every fight with level 1 slimes to last 2 whole minutes instead of being over in a flash, the type of retard that wants chatgpt npcs wants to spend 5 minutes extracting "you should go west to the castle" from an npc instead of just being told it.

What a terrible idea. There is no room for aimless chitchat in narrative dialogue.

These things are way too prone to hallucinating and forgetting things and that's before you deliberately try to break them. They're also not really interesting to interact with imo.
Anyway I imagine it'd be hard to implement cause you'd need to limit them pretty tightly so they don't say anything to kids but also so they stick to the lore. So we will probably get one in a game in like 4-5 years but it won't be good.

>Carisma would become a player skill and not a character skill at that point.
This is wholesomely retarded, it's like asking your average player to punch a sandbag to deal physical damage.
You are not as charismatic, intelligent or as strong you think your are, and all probability you lie somewhere on the spectrum. What you do have is a closed ecosystem (the game you play) where you can live out your fantasies, and you only excel in this limited system because of bias in its responses and because it's pre-programmed for you to succeed.

LLMs do have big potential for open world rpgs, the era of the storyfag is over.

yeah, and it's died out in jrpgs. meanwhile "jrpg-inspired" indie games made by westerners cling to it because they're too stupid to understand what makes a game good.

don't need to train your own model for it either.

I'm pretty sure Japs still love gimmicks.
If you grow up playing mostly Jap games, you're probably going to be confused about making good RPGs, yeah. Really nothing to do with "westerners", but rather "easterners".

Odd thing to obsess about when it's literally just SoS & E33, both made by french faggots.

Far less than the amount of JRPGs which did it (LoD, Lost Odyssey, Vagrant Story, Xenoblade).

Why?
It would just make every character the same, ran by the same retarded AI.
Just go talk to a AI chat bot for a while if you somehow think this is tolerable.
Anonymous No.3829346
attaching stats to chatgpt shit defeats the purpose, it's freeform. the only game i've seen do it well is that vampire invitation game where you have to convince people to let you inside their house. i'm sure immurshuntards will jump on some ai npc game though eventually and try to erp within it.

this, to make this work the AI needs to be aware of what information about the world each NPC knows about, and smart enough to properly LARP as them, without leaking any info they arent supposed to know, or references to real world things

t. AI-illiterate
It would be economically unfeasable - its just cheaper to make regular dialogue. Not just would the game would cost the company each time you prompt the NPC (unless its decided to make the AI model run locally which would become a boondoggle on the players hardware) the NPC would require as much if not more work to set up as a well-written dialogue tree as you would need to lay out boundaries, test the dialogue out, make known to the NPC what it does and doesn't know, make sure it responds properly etc. What would be workhours of one writer becomes a combined effort of writer, engineer and qa tester. Not to mention that even with all that, the NPC would still break down because AI just does that sometimes

>When will we get RPGs with NPCs powered by ChatGPT?

Hopefully never. There is nothing appealing with poorly written, incoherent slop. Beyond the short lived novelty of 'they answered by stupid random question' it would only make games worse.

No idea why some people are excited about AI gen when the results are never good.

NPCs are designed for world building and quest giving purposes. Giving them unique dialogue would make it more difficult to distinguish who's important and who isn't.

What will you do when the NPCs inevitably start spitting out irrelevant, hallucinatory bullshit that completely breaks immersion?

Eg. An "AI-powered" NPC starts contradicting basic lore of the game, telling you about quests/items/locations that don't exist anywhere, or maybe even regurgitating random shit from other games

Even the biggest AI companies admit they have no idea how to solve the problem of hallucinations with LLMs. It's bad enough even when just asking ChatGPT questions directly, but implementing that technology into a complex game world and expecting it to abide by the lore and logic of that world is a recipe for disaster.

I think there is a small but committed group of weirdos who keep forcing AI threads on this board.

Every time I come here there's at least 2 or 3 on the catalog at any one time. Seems strange for a small board. The other small vidya boards (like /vr/) don't have this issue.

It's either that, or for some reason 30-year-old RPG fans who browse 4chan are more likely to be AI shills.

They're lonely as shit, but the only thing they can talk about is The Current Thing.

They always sound retarded because they don't understand that, yes, other people have the internet as well, and we already know about The Current Thing.

So they spam stupid discussions and imagine a fantasy world where people actually notice their retard ramblings on the internet.

Admit it (You) faggot, you spend 99% of your waking life imagining conversations you'll never have with fictionalized versions of people. This is schizophrenia.

Or worse, pointing out all the plot-holes and inconsistencies in the game and its lore, devs will have a breakdown.

>AI points out how there's no need to rush, the BBEG can't actually do anything because you're carrying the "plot-device" he needs.
