They've been a popular fantasy trope all the way from the ancient Greeks to 1600s era explorers, so it's weird that nobody today is taking inspiration from them.

On the contrary, they completely revolutionize the concept of anatomy for bipedal humanoids. Where is the brain? The heart? The stomach? The gonads? How do you kill them? If you stab them in center mass, will it actually be effective? All of this matters because if you don't know what you're doing in a fight against one of these things it's got the upper hand. Plus, it's one thing to fear the women of your village being raped by other human-like creatures, but these things coming in to do who knows what to your precious babymakers is truly terrifying. It's the kind of humanoid that men would go on crusades to genocide.
