I can't bring myself to play the Witcher 3 as everytime I want to try it, I get a sense of disgust in my brain because I just think "reddit game." And anything reddit disgusts me.

I've tried 3 different times to play witcher 3, i get very far into the game but the combat is just so fucking boring i always end up dropping it. I ended up just reading the books instead. Boring JRPG combat doesn't bother me (although i tend to play rpg's with actually fun battle systems) at all, but boring action combat just activates the "not having fun" center in my brain and makes me wish i was playing something else.

The best part of witcher 3 combat was navigating menus for your buffs and oils before hunting a monster. They desperately needed like one more active element to the combat to help shake things up, as is the game boils down to a single buttom game unless you go out of your way to make your own fun. And then you're still just fighting a monster with one button and the same 3 janky geralt sword animations.

I've been a die hard monhun faggot since 4U and have beaten the original on ps2. Witcher 3 just feels like it's stuck between turnbased combat and actually hard action combat and it just makes for a really boring experience.

That's kinda what makes him interesting in the scope of the whole story though. He's what I like to call a Conscious Conan, a sword and sorcery hero grappling with the pulp nature of his premise.
Guts did it 1000000000 times better, but it's a similar archetype. He's at his most likable in the presence of supporting characters who expose him as a goofball, like Dandelion and Yennifer.
Look it's not prestige or anything but it's fun.

So what's THE mod/overhaul to use to play this?
The MMO like levels for quests and enemies were an instant turnoff.
However the W3EE and EERedux were far too over the top difficult to be enjoyable, and rather clunky.
Still, the closest I came to enjoying the combat was with a heavily tweaked EERedux, but it was still very unrefined and uneven.

Its an ok game with some stunning and brave graphics, especially if you install HD texture mod. I play it for the grafics and locations alone. You dont need to do all the side quests except if you have ocd like I seem to have. The movement is a bit cluncky and you need to disable vsync, go borderless windowed mode and limit fps to 60 to get okayish input lag. Recently on linux hdr is broken again so I play sdr which still is okay looking.

Really the most annoying part is the clunky movement

I just finished this game last night. Read a bit about it beforehand and it was suggested to play on a harder difficulty. So I just started on the hardest mode, death march. Got really hooked, both because of the difficulty at first and because of the rich story telling. Let me tell you, the rich story telling gets really fucking old at some point. Holy fuck, it just goes on and on and on.

I spent 82 hours finishing the main story and I think I will also play and finish the 2 dlc´s that I already bought and downloaded, but I would not recommend this game to people. It´s too much padding and overly long out drawn conversations about nothing. What is even worse, it´s bad game design. You basically get xp on the main story. Well I went to some Islands with vikings when I was lvl 11, the game did suggest me being lvl 14 or 16, but I went anyway and did that part of the main story. So I come back to the main continent as lvl 20 or so. Now I need to do another part of the main story, suggested to do when you are lvl 10-12. Many many hours of me playing as lvl 20 doing lvl 10-12 quests and storyline that can´t be skipped. That´s bad game design, they could just have done it so I couldn´t go to those islands to begin with before I had finished the lower levels mainstory.

I agree, the leveling is disjointed. I explored all of Velen and completed the side quests along the way and ended up way over leveled for the rest of the game. The Skellige quests are no fun when everything does in two hits. I just realized there's an entire section of Novigrad to the north full of quests and locations I haven't explored and I know they're going to be low level so it's not even worth it. I could see how you can plan out different leveling routes for different playthroughs but it's something you would know after already finishing the game and having the appetite to go again.

Best RPG of all-time, I will die on this hill.

The devs decided to balance the xp curve such that doing absolutely nothing other than the main quest would place you at an appropriate level for the main quest. I can sort of see why they did this, but it also sort of sucks. Fundamentally, I think “giant open world with tons of optional content” and “tightly focused, lengthy, and narrative-heavy main quest” are at odds with each other. The worst option of all would be “just level scale the entire game lol” which for some insane reason the devs applied to Cyberpunk at some point in post release patches. But either way, either a completionist player ends up super overleveled which is boring, or if you scale the content with the expectation that the player will have done X Y Z, then suddenly those things are no longer optional, but expected and implicitly required.
