You know that shields are not weapons, right? They're armor. They're meant to protect you. You can bash with it just like you can headbutt someone. You *can*.... but that's not really what it's for, and if you don't really really know what you're doing, then you're gonna hurt yourself a lot more than you hurt them.
You want a weapon in that hand? Put a weapon in that hand. Not a shield.

Shields are not passive armor, they're active deflection that a warrior needs to position properly for deflecting arrows and weaponry. What a shield "is for" depends entirely on the type of shield and its purpose. Some are designed specifically for parrying in close quarter duels, others are designed to be used in formation to create strategic defensive maneuvers, and others are more ceremonial rather than practical. Sure, the intention is not to split someone's skull open or stab them, but the use of a shield is still extremely active and requires as much position and timing as a sword strike to utilize properly. Having shields give nothing more than a base armor bonus is extremely lazy game design.

are there turn-based games where you need a shield equipped to block attacks? i want games where equipment makes a difference past stat buffs

Didn't FF6 have equipped shields grant you a chance to block attacks?

Just raised the already existing evade stats and allowed a shield block animation to play.

Now SaGa is a different story.

Oh I see, I thought the blocking was in addition to dodging. The evasion stat is bugged in the original, so I didn't see much of either.

love it or hate it kind of thing. i love it but i can see why some might not enjoy it. it's also barely an rpg, heavily action oriented. but it has an interesting progression system, fun combat and a cool setting.

okay, so you get four patron gods in this game
>ares - heavy melee with mace
>hermes - fast attacks with sword
>athena - spear mastery
>helios - buffs

you unlock skills which are a combination of different abilities and stats increases by following a god's skill tree. good news is that you'll be able to buy out like 70% of all skills so you'll get to have fun with all the tools the game has, you're not locked in to one play style.

the way you gain experience in this game is by accomplishing "feats" - killing 10 enemies with a spear, killing 100 enemies, with a spear, bashing 100 enemies with a shield and following up with a stab, etc; and then you dedicate the feats to a god when you want to advance a skill tree. nothing is stopping you from dedicated 100 mace kills to athena either. you'll also get a lot of feats from completing quests and other more varied ways. for example you get a feat called "patience of the gods" by listening to one of the npc children sing an annoying song to completion without interrupting him, you get a feat for playing a minigame with another npc, etc.

that's basically it. like i said you'll get plenty of feats to dedicate so you'll be able to unlock most of the interesting skills and you can freely change it up. if you're bored of the mace, you can use the spear for a while, or the sword. all are fun. you get to see what the combat feats are in advance too, so you can adapt your playstyle to get more feats instead.

Outstanding. Wishing for something like this for like since I was a child. It's just the better way, instead of hitting a dead tree 100000x and become a demi god in no time.

cool, hope you enjoy it. iirc the enemies don't respawn infinitely so you can't even be tricked by your autism into entering and exiting the same area infinitely to grind.

Shame that this was done by an obscure game. I strongly dislike infinite enemies and max power. Everything should be limited, esp money and legendary artifacts.
