SWTOR
Why does this game have such good stories?
Played this as a single player RPG and it BTFO every other (rpg) game I've played.
Anybody else agree? Am I retarded? (Don't answer that)
Maybe rec some non-fantasy RPGs with similar features

Posting here since I don't really care about the MMO side of the game, I just like doing the quests and dressing up my character for my headcanons

Because some suit wanted to make this a major flagship breaktrough MMO defining the next decade of gaming. Not even exaggerating here. Thats why they pumped obscene amounts of money into the development (at that time).
Also objectively everything after Rise of the Cuck Cartel was absolute ass storywise.

they vary wildly. what I found amusing is force classes are at their best when you play with the opposite alignment for some reason.

no one else really does. community is divided into soloers enjoying their story and people doing forgettable end game raids. since you can't use artifact quality gear otherwise, it means you MUST subscribe to effectively participate in raiding.

DOS2 was pretty offputting the first time I tried it, I got filtered by the boat tutorial, with the barrelmancy and all the surface interactions. Didn't care for it. I later gave it another shot and did get into it and finish it, it's a pretty good game, but I can see why someone might not care for it at first.

only played as neutral/light sided inquisitor, it was rather interesting playing character that genuinely cared about state of the empire while also trying to shape less dogmatic view of the force around him(and the endless seething from jedi was priceless)

>Why does this game have such good stories?
Because this was Bioware back when they were still good. They were (rightly) considered the best narrative-driven RPG studio in the business back in the day.
Moreover the scope of an MMO allowed them to offer a level of roleplaying customisation that titles like KOTOR never could. In every one of the class stories I decided to make my character have several weird quirks that differentiated them beyond dark/light and in every class story it actually showed up.
The game excels at that immersive roleplaying more than any other MMO. Where it isn't so good is typical MMO shit - limited time FOMO manipulation, grinding raids/reputation/dailies, finding groups, confusing and inconsistent systems, etc.

Anything heavily moddable can give you that, e.g. Elder Scrolls. But for a base game it’s probably only going to be some old all-text crpg. Also, it is an MMO, but LOTRO is even more single player than SWTOR and it really leans into RP, atmosphere, and a slow pace that lets the setting unfold. It isn’t as polished as swtor though.

I liked sith class stories. It's like the only game where you can play a sith (actual one, not fallen to the dark side jedincel) and also sith purebloods. I wish it was singleplayer, would be sad to see it shut down.

It's not that it's good, it's that everything else is bad.
Would I even say that it has good writing? No, not really. The good thing it has going for it is that, since there are 8 class stories, there are 8 chances that one of them is going to be good. In addition to that, since they all needed to home in on a specific fantasy and differentiate themselves, they're more inherently varied and interesting than normal Star Wars stories, which are generally trying to be kind of one-note and generic.
That said; good? The only two that are good are Sith Warrior and Imperial Agent. The other 6 range from alright to dogshit. Bioware used to be better, now they've devolved into a total dumpster fire. In addition to that, they've more or less abandoned the game to whatever F-team is still keeping it on life support, so the quality is now in the toilet.
That being said, I did make some good memories playing it with my brother. It was a more innocent time before everything sucked total ass.

I think it feels good to get lost in the story and get attached since you create your character and so on, but they're not that great imo, some are ok, others not so much.

>I don't really care about the MMO side of the game
Me neither, the stories make it worth a run but since it's an mmo your choices mean squat. Not that it matters, the story matters, but mmo and rpg are a contradiction to put together.
Also wtf is with all the threads about SWTOR lately, is it just you posting? I've been thinking about going back to this game and now all of the sudden everyone is talking about it in here.

I agree. This is one reason I love this game to this day even if even at the beginning I still thought it wasn't that good and it annoyed me. I'd dare say it's got sovl. But that's all a good description for Star Wars in general.

Yeah the sequel trilogy didn't exist yet, and everything has a very 80s vibe. Some people don't like this, but I like feeling like I'm on the set of a science fiction movie/TV set. The plastic kind of look to the environmental props actually enhance that experience for me. Star Wars wasn't in such a sorry state that just talking about it pissed me off yet. Bioware was on the downswing, Star Wars was ebbing, but not terrible, the game was still inoffensively fun with no real downsides, culture war wasn't a thing yet, cartel shop didn't exist yet so you weren't being aggressively scammed yet. Just good clean fun.
>>3832693
It's a fairly standard spy thriller, but it felt fresh because its a unique vibe for the Star Wars universe. Also, of all the stories it's probably the most reactive to your choices. It's at liberty to be that way because, as a spy, you can justify whatever's happening with "I'm a double, triple, quadruple agent."
Gives them a lot of leeway. You can literally double cross the empire for the republic and the story still works. Meanwhile, if you're playing basically any other story it can be a little goofy how it keeps you on the rails despite an obvious ultra traitor because of the light/dark side system.
>Jedi with glowing red eyes and palpable rape aura of darkness.
>Keep getting accolades and promotions despite purposefully fucking up every scenario and being obviously evil

bruh i remember this exact thing i played JK dark side and I would turn off corruption when around other Jedi just for rp purposes, not that it matters. But I forgot for the scene where you're decorated in the end or whatever. I walked in there sporting the Exorcist face and and Satele doesn't give a shit, she just didn't give me the rank of Master. It was hilarious to me.

Knights of the steaming shitpile really broke me and was the reason I left the whole MMO.
Apart from the fact that its such an asspull of epic proportions it could be very well the naruto fanfic of a 12 year old weeb girl who just made shit up on the spot during her first GM session. It did not fit at all into the setting in any way, the powercreep of the characters (lorewise) was abyssmal and essentially everyone of interest was a demi god plus it completely destroyed the narrative they kept alive that made other PC's being there believable and essentially voided the faction choice but without a cool feature that would have made it possible to actually choose a second time (which would have made sense). Obviously because they just made WoW in space and needed the garrison mechanic to be shoehorned in there but still.
Suddenly I'm not a republican smuggler anymore, a hero of the republic unquestionably but not "the one". Seeing other smugglers at the fleet? Yeah thats easy to explain reasonably. But whats that? Now I'm the commander guy of a third, neutral faction that took over a planet and established a base there and from this planet I single handedly fell the strongest and by far most advanced civilization, that still only settles on that one planet and is ruled by a literal godlike energy satan? Furthermore I'm the new energy satan ruler of this empire? And when I'm the emperor of the galaxy, why the fuck are there like a thousand other guys like me and why am I taking orders from some brass of my totally-not-my-faction? Also how did I, as non force user who beats up shit with his fists and bonks enemies heads with the handle of my gun, survive a standoff with the galaxies most feared force user of whom even energy satan is scared shitless? and why do I still want to bangfix her years later?.
I eman the gameplay was horrible to but the plot just went completely off the rails with kotfe,

Took the time to read it, made me kek. Never actually ran the expansions, just saw a couple playthroughs/reviews. Probably never will go through them, seems like a waste of my time.

Like unironically I wonder this.
Her appearance could be rationalized as her having gotten those Sith tattoos in her time as a slave. Plus despite her family being mostly blue-skinned this can vary even within families (I think Hera Syndulla's father was a different skin color). Eyes can be orange in Twi'leks as well.
BUT her appearance still transmits a Sith idea of passion and power. I picked that one bc it was the most attractive.
But blue... blue for some reason conveys more the role of Vette in the romance part. She tends to humanize the warrior. Blue is the color of the Light Side prompts after all. Blue good, Red evil.
I'm genuinely torn by this bc I screenshot or sometimes record playthroughs. And I can't decide what route to go with.

Well it's no modded skyrim but no MMO could operate on that level of customisability. I say it's good because it manages to convey personality very well, whereas other MMO character creators I've seen just give you bland templates.

>>3837247
Why? It's a cosmetic cash shop and unlike something like TERA the cosmetics actually fit the setting. The major focus of the game is story roleplay, not raidslop, so it's not like it's undercutting any reward space like in other MMOs.

There have been attempts as early as 2012 but everything failed since the interest was simply completely gone already during vanilla and it turned into a complete niche game. No one wants to spend years of development so the 50+ people who can even remember vanilla TOR will play it, especially considering that the content in vanilla was extremely lackluster. People didnt stay because after the story there was just... nothing. The story is still playable though so even over a decade ago devs realized they probably wont even get enough people to play an emu server for beta testing. Adding content is brutally difficult because the game world isnt that much open, unused spaces, and very linear. Apart from that its EA with a shitton of voice acting. The red hot glowing fuckrod of that lawsuit lingering in the corner of their eyes is probably also why they rather avoid it.
The biggest problem is though that the game was already completely fucked up by badly merged systems, values all over the place etc. at the time of kotfe. That was a decade ago. They are not doing it like Blizzturd who where remotely competent in merging expansions (in comparison). Whatever skeleton crew runs TOR just shits all over the place and jury rigs it together. The amount of outright broken content before the current expansion is astonishing. Sadly this behavior also carries over to conserving former builds. Aka they have none of those. So even if in theory there would be enough engagement here to justify a passion project like that, it would be borderline impossible since the game died so fast and no one archived anything, which means whoever would do this would have to pull out basically all numberwork out of their ass and hope that it fits somehow. Try to find something substantial about vanilla TOR anywhere. You wont. Neither the devs nor the public ever did any real documentation about it.
At that point you could spend your time just developing a completely new game.

Not just for the gameplay; for the whole package. The story combined with the more engaging gameplay it used to have plus the MMO aspect (including world PvP). All of those factors were what made SWTOR fun for me years ago. Now it's just a series of empty zones you sleepwalk through to get to the next dialogue tree or cinematic. The story has no weight when everything you're doing to advance it is easy mode.

There’s about 2-3 great class stories between the 8 classes, the rest aren’t terrible but they range from mediocre to the occasional glimpse of good bits salvaged from the original KOTOR 3 concept. That being said I think whatever they would have done with 3 if it had been allowed to come out as a single player RPG would have turned out weaker than TOR. It’s a shame the overarching story went terribly when they got to Revan and the expansions and since then it’s been nothing but repeats of the Jedi Knight’s class story structure over and over.
