OFF Thread
The remake came out in full just a week ago, I want to know what (you) all thought of the remaster of this RPGmaker classic.

Personally I thought it was a step down in many ways, namely the new soundtrack. Fortunately the old soundtrack can be modded back in.

Imagine paying $15 for a worse version of a nearly 2 decades old FREE game.
Anyone who buyeded boght this rebreak is clinically fucking retarded. The diagnosis is written on your receipt.

So wtf are specters supposed to be exactly? Theyre dead elsen right? So wouldn't there be a ton running around after the secretaries roll in and pummel all the elsen to death? Why are there zero in the "purified" zones? What about if a secretary died without being purfied by batter? Would it produce a specter if burned to sugar?

I love OFF, it's one of my all time favorite games. 12 bucks was nothing to see some more stuff from a game I love and to support the creator of it.
I actually spent a lot more since I preordered it to get the bobblehead and the tie-in comic book.

I don't think the specters are actually ghosts. And if they are, I assume they must be ghosts of the old world pre the apocalypse seen in the flashback parts of The Room.
They, along with the secretaries, are enigmas to me. I don't get how they fit in with the rest of the setting.

Huh, didn't realize it, but I suppose the remake really is just a cash grab. Fangamer probably made stacks off a low effort remake off of merch alone. I fell for it too lmao. I bought the poster, shirt and collectors edition. Am I a good goy?

There are other ways to support the creator desu
Or maybe he could have made it the itch.io way, donation-based

>"support the creator"
If the creator was worthy of your support, he would have released a new game instead of releasing a lazy cash grab to seek rent on something he did ages ago.

Frankly I just did the preorder to get the tie-in comic book because I love comic books.
And having a physical version could prove an asset.

>So wtf are specters supposed to be exactly?
Apparently they are actually sent by Hugo and the Queen. The partially illegible book in the library has been reconstructed, and it says that (according to legend) the Queen in the room, ruling by her father's side, summon the specters to destroy the world they themselves created.

weird to see the game get soft-subsumed by undertale. i feel as if the touches of that influence are seen in the new remake and music too. whatever. even the new snappiness of the combat kind of removes a little bit of the unease, but i'm ultimately fine with stuff like that a little i guess? it's hard to know entirely what of my opinions are just disliking new things, though i generally am usually quite open and supportive of new approaches. i just wasn't really left happy with the remake as is, even the new bosses didn't feel all that OFF-y or cool. (a note, i also didn't really like Sugar from the original, either)

Possibly one of the most dated Rpg Maker games I've ever played and it really got nothing going except for the style and sountrack. This is far from being the deep arthouse masterpiece the fanbase claims to be and there's plenty of indie/rpg maker games that pull the whole surrealism and symbolism schtick in a much more entertaining manner.

Is the comic interesting at least? I'm not familiar with any of Mortis's other works, never got to read Doctor Cataclism.

I wonder about the extent to which what feels "OFF-y" is altered by long-time fan perception and the like; the new bosses felt like stuff Mortis Ghost could make to me, and they were based on the same signs of the Zodiac as the card items. This is the same game that gave us Space Apes and Boxxer.

Side note - I expected to be pretty disappointed when I realized that there was a bonus boss between Queen and Hugo, but Cob felt surprisingly fitting in context if you're deliberately going out your way to see him. YMMV.

Also while I don't mind the new bosses not adding any real "answers" to the setting, it does feel like their potential development suffers a little from them (understandably) not being allowed to touch the rest of the game.

The new bosses kinda feel like a tacked-on multiplayer mode.
They don't impact the regular game or narrative at all, so they're basically just a thing that is there I guess

I really liked OFF, but I refuse to play the demake because it's fucking insulting.
It's Nestle-tier consumer fuckery. I hate it when people soullessly repackage shit that used to be free because they want to make a quick buck.
>You remember this game?
>Here it is again, except worse and this time we'll be taking your money!
Yeah, piss off with that. I hate how hyper-monetized everything is now. People used to write for free, make music for free, draw for free, make games for free, make videos for free. There was a big free scene for every genre.
Now? All that is gone because everyone just wants to scam an easy dollar. Online art used to be about creativity and pride, now everything is just a get-rich quick scheme. Nobody cultivates an audience anymore for any other reason beyond monetizing them.

it's not a game that warrants any type of sequel or expansion. i'd be more interested to see the duo take a crack at something completely different.

It is a complete cash grab.
You have this game which is already done, it's been out for 17 years, and then there's a port which adds basically fuck all and costs 15 dollars despite being 96% the same game.
Anonymous No.3836523

Exactly.
And it'll make bank too because zoomers are incapable of playing anything that's not on Steam, they're too ignorant to know any better, too socially inept to have even heard that the game is free and better elsewhere, and they take it for granted they have to spend money on everything.
OFF has gone from a quasi-legendary title I recommended to everyone with even a passing interest in freeware or RPG Maker titles, to being something I'm actively going to counsel people against.
What's next? Fucking Goblet Grotto, Space Funeral, and 7th Stand User are going to be released on steam despite being free for over a decade too.
There's chum in the water now that this open greed is getting normalized.

Sad to hear that the remake sort of sucks.
Hell, if he basically released the game as it was for like five bucks I would pay that just as a tip but I am not going to pay for a worse version of a free game that I can already play on my PC and multiple portable consoles with homebrew.

I mean, I guess the remake is better. If you download the mod which restores the original sound track.
The new boss fights are fun, and I like the new art and animations here and there. It's also the best translation the game has ever seen. I really like how the Batter, when he's not being super blunt and stoic, kinda waxes religiously. Using that terminology on the rare occasions he actually describes anything.

15 is too much for it. I mean wasn't Undertale just 10? Undertale is a much more complete game, and that one also wasn't free to play for 17 years.

I kinda liked the new choice of old-timey music for the credits. It wasn’t exactly thematically subtle (neither was Over the Rainbow I guess) but it felt thoughtfully picked out.
Anonymous No.3837488

Yeah that was the only new song which I felt was an improvement over the original soundtrack.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow will just never be separated in people's minds from The Wizard of Oz, so it's use in OFF feels less special.
Lee Morse's (who I have gotten into since finding her through the OFF remaster and now quite enjoy) 'If You Want the Rainbow" now feels tied to OFF in a memorable way.

Though, I can't help but notice that they picked that specific recording because it is in the public domain, so they wouldn't need to pay any royalties for it.

personally i was expecting to be completely disappointed, but was pleasantly surprised.
my thoughts overall
>new OST (getting this out of the way first)
yeeeeeah, that was a fucked scenario no matter what.
the original OST was a massive part of the game's theming. a new OST obviously wouldnt be as good since the original is an intrinsic part of OFF
personally: the new OST did an OK enough job
the battle themes, pepper steak is obviously the "it will be a downgrade no matter what", but white meat/rot/carcass are good enough replacements.
zone 1's battle theme should've been given a different mix
flesh maze tango's replacement (lost in the flesh) is a definite "jesus christ why" tier replacement
doorslam is an objectively improved replacement because its not just ear rape like the original
the void tracks (replacing brain plague)... honestly, i think they fit the room's theming a bit better than the original
>combat changes
i already don' remember
anyone mind giving me a qrd?
>the new horoscope bosses
putting these all in one block
>>source
+ decent gimmick (having to save your CP for the second phase and then going all out before you get DOTed to death)
+ decent introduction to the new content
- design doesnt really feel like it fits OFF
>>malediction
- pretty lame gimmick (fight is cut up by shield phases)
- also doesnt really feel like it fits off
- theme sucks
probably the worst of the new bosses
>>psal/hero
++ arguably has the most fun gimmick
+ feels like it fits off
+ good self theming
>>justus
+ decent bit off additional "you've been had" for the pile
- but its not really needed at this point.
----- amogus
>>carnival
+feels like it fits off
- incoherent gimmick, couldnt even really learn it before i beat it aside from "different 'games' have different 'prize' conditions"
>>cob
+ decent gimmick
- fight takes WAY too long for what it does
- doesnt really fit OFF
