Dragon Quest VII
I present to you the greatest Dragon Quest game ever.
I really don’t understand why people don’t like this game.

Of course I meant the PS1 original version

If you're not already a DQ fan the game is just going to feel like a giant slog.
I played the PS1 version and liked it well enough but I cannot imagine any non-DQfag giving it the time of day and not end up incredibly underwhelmed.

People have a hard time because they 1. haven’t played DQ before and 2. pick this one because “oh it has the most content!” and get burned out because of the episodic nature of the game. Also if you dislike a town or whatever it sucks that you not only have to save it in the past, but also usually have to do it again in the present.

Me? I love it, a great game to play for half an hour to an hour, save a little town, and move on. It captures the DQ spirit in its totality. I would have made the world map bigger and added even more episodes

2+ hour long intro

It's mid. The best is easily VIII and then XI. III HD Remake is third probably. Oh no, maybe IX is third place.

VII was too annoying figuring out where to go at times. I never use guides but I made an exception when playing VII because I didn't want to wander around aimlessly not knowing where to go. It also has a shitty story.

Did you really have a hard time figuring out where to go? I thought it was pretty linear. The first time I played, I was like 12 and at no point was I ever lost or did I miss anything. I've felt the same way on subsequent replays - it's presented like a large, open world, but it's pretty linear.

Go to the past > Fix it > Return in the future > Find pieces you need to go to the past > Go to the past > Fix it > Repeat ad infinitum

God, what a beautiful song. I wonder why it never appears in any of the other Dragon Quest games.

If you miss some tablets and don't keep track of which ones you got ur fucked. I heard the ds version does something to help in this regard

There is a fortune teller who give hints to find each missed tablet.

I have the 3ds version, but I haven't played it yet. Is it still fun times?

I like it too but it is FAR from the best game in the franchise. WAY too far.

- The story being multiple fragmented stories is boring since most of these are boring/uninteresting, and also makes it so that there is too much dialogue. There is an overarching story, sure, but it's just "ohhh evil demon king sliced up the world and defeated god" and that's it.

- The job system is done poorly and turns the game into a repetitive slog since you'll get skills like scorch, thin air, hustle dance too early, voiding the game from any decision making. Your characters will also have way too many skills and only use like 5 of them.

- The monster hearts, while cool in concept, just feels like you're playing a downgraded version of the regular classes.

- Maribel just leaving for a huge amount of time for some reason, making you miss out on a ton of battles that would have leveled up her job, which at that point in the game would've have been an intermediate/advanced one

- just way too long, overstays it's welcome

This is based on the 3ds version, which I played recently, but I also played the ps1 version before and it was even worse

It is best enjoyed as a series of short stories
Sitting down to do one island every weekend is about the right pace for this game

I'll say, that as a piece of gameplay, having the rug pulled on me at the abbey was very effective

I really liked the game a lot, but I think Enix dropped the ball when they could have let us use all 5 characters at once for the very final parts of the game after the whole gang got back together. Would have been absolute kino gameplay moment

i finally finished the 3ds version. there was a 'victory tour' near the end after beating the final boss and at that point i so over the game. i skipped one of the parts of the victory tour so i hope i didnt miss any special items or something. i know theres extra bosses but idk where to find the rest of their tablets. i was burnt out trying to get 3 characters to max the champion vocation and to max out maribels druid vocation. i hope dq8 is less annoying to play through.
