Dragon Quest IX
Is this worth playing as a single player game. I’ve heard a lot of people say the game isn’t good without the multiplayer. I have no friends so that’s not an option.
Anonymous No.3832155 >>3832211
Single player is good, it's just that after unlocking the postgame (grottoes) it feels like a tutorial. What you'll be missing are the DLC quests and grotto (the ones with metal king slime only floors) map sharing feature.
If you're not into randomized dungeon grinding and won't bother with grottoes then it's perfectly fine.

I'm in the first town. So far it's seeming like a pretty mid dragon quest game. The graphics do look great upscaled on my oled screen though.

They weren't trying to reinvent the wheel, it's just overall solid, visit towns, solve their problems. Best part is every piece of gear is shown on your characters. Not even DQXI does that.

Keep in mind this was an actual DS game m8 what they managed to squeeze into the system was amazing for it's time

I've seen more impressive on the system.

Yes. The MP is just the post game.

This, full party creation and customization like that is rare in jrpgs

Game is designed to use 40h in the main plot and 400h in grottoes with some friends.
The story's low difficulty gets killed super hard if you grind some metal slimes on low level classes to get more skills.
If you don't bring friends the randomized, highly repetitive stages it can be lethally boring.

How does IX compare to other games in the series? I’ve played XI, VIII, VII, V, and III. I rarely hear people bring up DQIX. I’ve always assumed it must be towards the bottom of the barrel.

No random battles unlike the earlier titles, equipment show up on your characters so you can fashion quest, gear restriction is tied to vocation, not character since they are all blank slates.
On why it's less talked about, for one your team have no personality. Only the hero has some backstory.

Bro the hero has basically zero personality in any of these games.

Fuck yes it is (assuming you like DQ's style at all.)

The story is kino, the party creation system is the best in the whole franchise, and 100% of the multiplayer stuff is completely unnecessary cosmetics.

DQ9 is easily top 3 in the franchise, as a single player game.

DQ9 is great, it only gets ignored for the same reason DQ10 is ignored. Japs are very stubborn about accessibility. I guess they hate money or something.

>Best part is every piece of gear is shown on your characters
The game itself was solid, but I think this is actually what got me hooked. I spent hours grinding in the postgame to try and get every piece of equipment just so I could play dress-up with my party, lol. Hell, I even went to a Facebook group meet-up just so I could trade grotto maps with people and get some of the really good ones. Has anyone come up with a way to emulate streetpass data yet?

It was nice that I had a party of four, fully-leveled, omni-classed characters, yet the post game dungeons still offered a challenge. Some of those bosses were no fucking joke.

I wanted to keep grinding the grottoes so I could fight all of the bosses but can't figure out a way. I'm sure there is one.

There are grotto calculators to predict with high accuracy what's inside of your grotto maps, like which boss, having metal king slime or not and number of floors.

I remember using those things. I also remember an RNG calculator that would give you steps to follow to determine your game's RNG pattern, then subsequently manipulate it to ensure the ultra rare drops from grotto bosses. Shit was pretty cool.

This is by far my least favorite dragon quest game.
Not just mainline game. I've played a shitton of spinoffs too. It's worse than all of those. Fuck dq9, slow as fuck battles, boring npc's, easily Sugiyama's worst Ost, shitty side quests, looks like shit, plays like shit, just a shitty game.
Anonymous No.3835046
DQ9 is okay as a single player game, but it's not really worth your time.
It was meant for multiplayer and you missed that boat.

It's fine. Visible encounters ruin it as much as the shitty online quests and 'postgame'. What sucks is that the class system is the best of any of the games.
Try it after the original releases of 8, 7, 6 and 5.

Save at start with DLC unlocked. You can also get a save editor which is useful for skipping the bullshit with generating what kind of grottoe you need.

You can also use a healing table to exploit rng and guarantee 1% drops and transmutes.

Best party generation and class system.
2nd worst story and characters after 11. Instead of silent protagonist it's silent entire party.
Worst dungeons due to visible encounters.
Crafting is only better than X.

Treasures is the worst. The treasures are jpgs that have no purpose.
All the other spinoffs are good to great.

I'd probably rationalize it like this. It's on the ds and it's an rpg; a pretty traditional one at that. Either this falls outside a good chunk of a people's range in a space with ds era pokemon. On top of this, it's smack dab between dq8 kind of cementing the new look of what a proper modern dragon quest should be (and then you can see if people got in via 8 some of the potential lack of overlap with ps2 users) and dq11 making it generally accepted among the gaming populous for dragon quest to be properly known and cool. And to top this off, not only would you need to know about dq9, you'd need to sell someone else on being able to have others who could get into it around you for the full experience at a time when monster hunter is also tied to proximity and very niche. So a niche on top of a niche. And accessibility.
Anonymous No.3838271
I still can't believe there's no DS emulator that has netplay after all of these years I want to play this game multiplayer so fucking bad.

>Treasures is the worst.
I was sort of astounded by how bad it was. Every other DQ spinoff I've tried has at least done something to justify its existence as a stand-alone title, but Treasures just took a popular character and used him to prop up the most pointless, brain-dead gameplay loop imaginable.

>What sucks is that the class system is the best of any of the games.
Wow that DOES suck. I loved IX, but the class system wasn't particularly clever or fun. It was just about getting the strongest abilities and putting them on every character for maximum utility. And since you always had access to your complete spell list, nothing felt particularly strategic in terms of party composition. You could even cheese the system by leveling a character in a job you don't care aboout, then spending the skill points in another job. It all just felt kinda sloppy.

He probably meant that random encounters can be prevented with a spell or holy water, but visible enemies can always bump into you even if you use holy water, so you have to be on your toes while exploring dungeons regardless.
