Even with emulator fast-forward this game's a SLOG

I still want to play it. I liked it when I tried a long time ago.

Thats the nature of 3d & ps2 games in general

Suikoden especially never really got 3D right until the fifth game.

The characters are pretty likable but the writing is struggling to carry the whole thing on its back. It plays like shit, the camera and movement suck, you're going over the same areas over and over, and it looks far worse than the previous games. Music is also pretty lacking, it's just completely missing in some scenes and even when it's there it's forgettable.

Poorly paced story combined with having you run through the exact same small areas with 3 (4) different characters over and over and over again was legit retarded.

Suikoden 3 is arguably the worst game in the series because it's such a pain in the ass to play through, while also having shit combat and strategy battles.

Is it weird I'm looking forward to the gacha
>>3834293
I think 4 is worse

4 is shorter, less monotonous, has better combat, better strategy battles better music.
4 is not good, but it is better than 3.

Personally I liked 4's 3d camera and locations even despite the slowdowns on the PS2.

I like 4 more than 3 despite 3 having my favorite protagonist in the series. The backtracking in 3 was such a pain and the writing kept having things left to be desired, it just felt strange. Nothing felt like it had any actual impact for some reason and the whole plotline with the wind rune fruit was kinda annoying even if kinda based that he wanted for the true tunes to stop effectively controlling people's fates. Also personally I liked 4's much much more than 3's aside from the opening. Exceeding love is such a good song for suikoden. Wonder if the upcoming suikoden 2 anime.is gonna have a similar style to the opening of 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RINHCpYzQK0

How does this entry compare to suikoden 2?

3 has better combat and character customization, but worse pacing, visuals, and music.

I finished the game yesterday and yeah the game gets a lot more interesting toward the end once you actually get into Luc's motives and stuff starts happening, but by god were the first 3 chapters and shifting perspectives badly executed.
I've only heard bad things about 4 but honestly a brisker pace sounds like what the series needs. Probably Suiko 1's greatest quality, the story isn't amazing but it's consistently engaging and always moving

>>3834737
Having just played both: I kinda thought it was worse in every way, but it is a much more ambitious game that just falls short of its ambitions. Still has some cool ideas and I would say worth a play if you can stomach an early PS2 3D RPG with all that entails.
Also recommend playing the Suikogaidens first they're short and pretty fun.

Also agreed on the opening, watching is honestly what made me wanna start 3 right after 2 when I originally intended to take a break. It's perfect.

Suikoden 4's story isn't really the issue, it's the fact that they lowered the party limit to 4+2 specials or something like that alongside most of the world map just being empty water. On the ps2 the random encounters on the ship world map were also absolutely retarded in quantity making moving to new or old islands a massive chore until you got Viki. Which at least doesn't take too long.
In terms of story I personally think that it's probably like 5=2>3. Though I got personal issues with 2's story, mainly the absolutely retarded actions of Joey and a couple others for no reason other than "it has to be that way because we're destined to fight". Like, fuck off. This is exactly why Luk does what he does in 3.

Also the whole performance issues on the ps2 thanks to suikoden 4 being the only 3d suikoden that has a movable camera and as result them not being able to do the same performance tricks they did for 3 and 5(even though 3 ran like absolute shit in terms of performance on the ps2 too lmao)

The runes have their own will and do push your destiny, I think it makes sense that things went the way they did, along with Jowy being intelligent yet still childish in his way of thinking. It is possible to defy the runes regardless of how much they push you in one direction, which is what Genkaku's story and the true ending in 2 convey (I also think it's a beautiful message of how war can be stopped and you don't need to keep feeding a perpetual conflict to the bitter end). 3 obviously liked this aspect of 2 since it makes it the central conflict.
How would you rate 4 compared to the others? 5 seems really interesting but I'd rather not skip 4.

It's mostly subjective but gameplay wise I find 4 superior to 3, even if that's for all and that major of a difference. Storywise I liked 4 more than 3 aside maybe the latter half of 3 which I did also like in 3. For s4 there's isn't really a lot of stories that also take places on an archipelago, the story itself felt sort of more "edgy" than the other ones but I can't quite describe why. The protagonists true rune is similar to the s1 true rune, soul eater since it essentially saps its users life when used. At the beginning of the game after certain events happen you get to choose 2 out of 4 of your preferred childhood friends and part of your starting party which I personally really like, they each have one of normal element runes: wind, water, fire and lightning. Also a very plot relevant child hold friend who I bet you're absolutely going to despise. Also there's an optional encounter with a person during suikoden 4 that has the soul eater rune as well, since suikoden 4 is chronologically the first story in the series to take place.
But yeah, I think in terms of story I consider the games to be 5=2>4>1>3
Gameplay wise I'd say 5>2>1>4>4
I do wish there were more interactions with Odessa in the first game, she was a nice character. Also it's a shame that the upcoming gacha turned her more grounded design into a incredibly generic anime design.

>>3834852
Odessa was lovely and left an impact despite her short appearance yeah, I named my castle after her.
I've seen too many franchises I like killed by chasing the gacha trend and I despise them with a passion, so I doubt I'll ever even play it. I get why some fans might be excited after so many years without a game but as a new fan everything about it seems grim.

Putting tierkreis on that list at all already makes it wrong
>>3834985
Tierkreis isn't a proper Suikoden game, but it sure as hell is better than 3 and 4 as a game.
>>3834280
i like the duck village and budehuc castle themes
>tierkreis

People really need to give that game a second chance if they're starving for Suikoden. Just get the undub, so you don't have the characters talk as if they're on speed.

I always got the sense 3 was generally well regarded, interesting to see pretty unanimous negativity in this thread. Personally I liked 1, 2, and 5 and then when I tried 3 something about it made me immediately bounce off it so I never gave it a real chance.
>>3837188
3 was regarded well at the time because
>it was cool to see suikoden in 3d
>it was cool to see the jump into the future for returning characters or seeing their children
>it was a neat idea to have 3(4) protagonists and parties

But under any scrutiny all the cracks and problems of 3 becomes apparent and the biggest ones tie directly into the things you do the most
>combat being weak
>music being weak and you hear the same music over and over...
>...because you run through the same small areas over and over again with multiple parties
The overall story just isn't very interesting either and feels very aimless. in 1, 2 and 5 your goal is very clear. Even 4 managed to be more focused.
>>3837188
I made this thread before I finished the game and now that I'm done with it I think it's okay, not a terrible game but man it could've been way better given the setting / ideas they had. Definitely nowhere near 2.
I played the first several hours of Suikoden 3 with a bunch of friends at a sleepover sixteen years ago. It felt like the most incredible game to me; I was hyped on it for years after just from that relatively brief exposure. I've always meant to give it a proper playthrough one day, but this thread is making me wary that I've built it up too much in my head.
>>3837579
it's ok
kind of a comfy feel
there's definitely some crap parts, but you might enjoy it anyway
i like it
>>3837878
I think I'm banking on the comfiness for sure. I guess at this point it's a personal experience and I should just go for it.
>>3837579
Playing it on a real hardware is comfier than emulating it, which is the case of most PS2 games for me
>>3837579
It's my favorite game in the series, but it does have some significant flaws. The whole "see the story from four different perspectives" gimmick isn't executed particularly well and mostly just makes the game feel repetitive, and the production values are terrible.
>>3838460
The production values are terrible? How so? That hand-animated sequence they put together for the intro is killer.
>>3838665
If you enjoyed III's intro, check out the intros for the two suikogaiden games. Same studio did them.
>>3838762
I'm not going to "play" a visual novel, bro.
>>3838665
The opening is by far the best looking part of the game. Everything else is early PS2 graphics from a studio obviously doing 3D for the first time.

>>3838790
You should read them, they're short and connect 2 and 3 in some cool ways. Also more Harmonia lore.
>>3838790
>check out the intros
>check out
>intros
I didn't tell you to play them although you should, Gaiden 1 is especially good, 2 not so much, Nash's backstory just ain't that interesting
Just watch the intros. They are nice.
>>3838802
I laugh thinking about the context Japanese players had seeing Nash in S3. For us westerners he was basically just another character.
>>3834606
I like 3 a lot but the last third of the game is so bad that pretty much soured me of the whole game. I've replayed pretty much every numbered Suikoden except 3, I just don't want to face the disappointment I felt back then again.
