it is. in the madden games, after you pick a play, the game will have the players run the play themselves if you don't make any inputs on the controller. and they will calculate their performance based on their stats. so if your quarterback has a weak arm or low awareness, his passes probably won't connect. if your halfback has low agility or strength he's more likely to get sidestepped or pancaked by one of the linebackers on the defensive team. In other words, the only player input is the selection of the play every down; turn based.
You the player can have as much or as little direct influence as you want. you can sit back and let the computer simulate games entirely in a few seconds and only concern yourself with the team management side (pure numbers autism), you can let the COM control your team and sit back with some popcorn and watch the game like you would watch a real one, you can do the above turn-based RPG play, you can take over any player on your team and run the play yourself however you want, or you can even make your own character and only focus on that single role whilst the computer controls everyone else. it's a turn-based tactical/strategy RPG.
