When producing media, no one expects a genius stroke. On the contrary, it would likely be contra productive. The best thing for any producer is to avoid as many pitfalls as possible. The result without genius will be mid, but mid is perfect for the brainless consoomer.

The only time I've ever cried playing a video game was during one of Berseria's skits of all things, where Velvet and Eizen are talking about flowers.

Tales of Vesparia was almost great. But seriously lacked edge and the characters didn't bond super well. I loved aspects of the game thought. It's like a 8.5 for an RPG. It's just missing like, something to tie it all together. A reason for caring about any of it. Maybe it's missing a bit of immersion, felt a little too by the numbers. But above average by all means.

The genre has almost always been AA in nature for most of its major franchises. This is the reason the genre went into decline at the onset of HD. The rise in costs disproportionately affected Japanese developers, who had a lot less resources to leverage compared to their Western counterpoints. As such, most publishers had to slim down their AA offerings to funnel more and more into their AAA endeavors. Capcom needed more for Resident Evil, so there goes Breath of Fire (among others like Mega Man). Konami needed more for Metal Gear, so bye bye Suikoden (and eventually everything else they made, including Metal Gear). The last decade has increasingly seen the reemergence of AA gaming, which is in part why the genre has been more prevalent after a dark age of 2006-2015. Tales was originally one of the few AA JRPGs to endure the hard times, mostly because Bamco was a publisher with a shit ton of cash to throw around as the EA of Japan (yearly licensed anime games being the Japanese equivalent to yearly licensed sports games).

Why was this part of the story so... disjointed?
The cutscenes went back and forth between a seahaven presumably right after the destruction of the Zenethra, and the storage shed at Hamil, with bits from a visit to Nia Khera throgn in the middle.
Anyway, it feels like I'm slowly approaching the end of Jude's path. Probably have another 1/3 of content to go or something like that?
There was a journey across Rashugal, a journey across Auj Oule, and now we're going to Elympios for the grand finale?
Whatever the case, I'm thinking of taking a break and leaving Milla's path for the remaster.

I saw the demo they had at Rappig Crossing and they inserted all of Phantasian production text in the game already, with their permission. Most of the hacking is done only missing subtitles for skits. Menu are all translated as well. The only thing that needs to be done they said is the new events they added in TOPX. Its incredibly just how "its there" energy this series has.
Like no game is considered a relevant entry for the genre.
Like it doesn't have a relevancy era like FF does.
Also doesn't have a truly generational game that stands above the genre like ATLUS has with Persona.
Vesperia and Symphonia which stood out as the rare jrpg on the system (360/Gamecube).
For the longest time its only rival has been Star Ocean, another midcarder in the genre.
So on the top you have FF, Persona, From Soft.
In the middle Tales, Atelier, Star Ocean.
On the bottom Idea Factory stuff.
So Tales has mostly being a tide me over franchise for the real games people look forward to. Not the bottom of the barrel but not the best of the genre. Also doesn't help that it lost its appeal as THE action rpg option in a sea of turn based games. Now action rpgs became the standard so Tales is more of a run of the mill in the genre.

I've only played Abyss, and I actually just started replaying it now despite me hardly replaying games because of me missing it. The cinematography, the UI, the cel-shaded artstyle, the unique plot about a fully prophesised future and the deep multiplayer combat are decidedly NOT mid. I think the reason japs love this series is because it only reaches its full potential when playing with a friend.

The multiplayer is kinda eh? You get the problem that 80% of the time one person is doing stuff and then the other(s) is just sitting there.
I think it works really well if you have like, a little sibling or something (that’s the prime Symphonia experience btw) but outside of that I don’t think it’s very fun to be a player 2-4.
In terms of the actual combat mechanics, it varies a lot game by game (xillia is messy for example because of the links mechanic). You sorta have to accept that your fight camera is going to be fucked if you want to try multiplayer.

People often say Tales are generic but honestly I find them less so than games like Dragon Quest or the myriad of "literal who" series like Trails or Valkyrie or what else. Some forget that no other JRPG series will ever reach Final Fantasy status. Even Persona is seen more as a romance simulator than anything else. Like say what you will but I like to look at things positively, and Phantasia is a classic, Eternia is one of the most fun JRPGs you can ever play in the PS1, Symphonia is the quintessential early 2000s 3D JRPG warts and all, Abyss I genuinely find to be one of the best games in the genre (yes, even with the lategame backtracking). Even Vesperia with its Microsoft-backed giant world and plethora of side content, or Graces battle autism, or Xillia's more cinematic approach to mirror the sensibilities of the more tame seventh gen... I don't know, I find myself visiting this general weekly and wishing more of the sidegames were translated because Tales really *is* unique. Now, if only Namco realized it too...

Finally got time and will to finish this.
One thing I don't get though is how does this tie into Jude's and Milla's adventure.
You need the Golden Key for this portal to appear, but you only get it after defeating Gaius, and after that happens Milla states that she would become the new Maxwell and judging by the final anime cutscene she never really goes back to Rieze Maxia physically, so this kinda doesn't make sense at all does it?
Not like it matters, it just feels like a weird decision to me. I don't think there wasn't a reason not to put the Golden Key elsewhere before the final fight with Gaius.
Who even is the Golden Mage Kniught anyway. Is it Aifread? Is it Kresnik? Is it a reference to one of the older games? (I only played Phantasia and about half of Symphonia before Xillia 1.)

The eternal sword is a decisive factor - either you have it and you're better than every other team or you don't and you lose. Really they should be in separate groupings because of that.

Sorey is too specialized against hellions specifically so he kinda sucks at fighting real people, especially if it's him without the seraphs. Lloyd is strong with his super exsphere but Cress is better, and Stahn and Millia both can do some pretty crazy stuff.

But again this is something that just gets brushed under the rug.
