Fuck archers on the high ground.
Is there a worse srpg gaming gimmick than archers getting fuck you range on the high ground?
More often than not, its to your disadvantage.
Is there a worse gimmick in srpgs than "start from below, you have to climb and in the meanwhile archers will pester you from afar and you barely have any places to move to protect yourself" maps?
Vandal Hearts, Hoshigami, Tactics Ogre, Fire Emblem where archers have fuckton range, etc.

Bad news OP but this is literally how it is in real life, as well.

Most of these games tend to be pretty easy and you have ways to deal with it. Not that big a deal and adds flavor to the game.

Really depends on what your options to deal with it look like. I haven't played all those games but if closing with the archers is harder because you tried to min/max by dumping your vertical movement stats into horizontal only, it could be a fair outcome.

English myth. Mud was the victor at Agincourt, not the longbow. Full armor is tank, tank gets stuck in mud.

It wouldn't be that bad if it weren't every other fight. Tactics ogre reborn is the pinnacle of artifical difficulty.
Problem with turnbased games were enemies and player share identical units and gear is obviously balance. If everything is identical or symmetrical then luck or rng will decide.

This doesn't happen in rpgs, you seem to be talking about strategy or tactics games

you should kill yourself for not knowing that rpgs are a subgenre of strategy and tactics games.

NTA but this isn’t really accurate. It’s true that DnD (and by extension, its descendants) did originate from tabletop tactical wargames, but there’s been sufficient divergent evolution that RPGs are now their own genre, though there’s is some overlap. There are RPGs with tactical combat, and there are RPG-adjacent tactical games that contain RPG elements (e.g. ja2) but there are plenty RPGs with no tactical combat and plenty of tactical games with no RPG mechanics. To argue that one is a subset of the other is about as reductionist as saying that all video games are pong clones.

I (sort-of) agree but the point was more to have an efficient response to this cockslurping troll: >>3863495
RPGs are their own genre, but tactical (or at least "decision-oriented") combat is a key component. When that component is missing you have to have a solid argument on why the remaining mechanics add up to a real RPG and not an adventure game, visual novel, or simulation.

>>3863596
>there are plenty RPGs with no tactical combat
The vast majority of those are explicitly hybrids (ARPGs) and the non-rpg component is specifically the action-oriented combat. Take away ARPGs and only a very few games without tactical combat can be reasonably be classified as an RPG. Not saying it's completely impossible, but you'll generally have a lot of explaining to do for those.

>plenty of tactical games with no RPG mechanics.
Tactical combat is an RPG mechanic. But if the game frames you as a commander managing troops in battle rather than the units on the field on adventure, then it's not an RPG.

No was a chapter in Hoshigami.
Worse was since the archer gets experience per hit on my higher leveled characters, he was actually getting stronger and more annoying with each shot.
