>We're working on siege features for the time being. I started with a first stab at siege planning - forbidden hatches and doors no longer stop invaders, and constructed walls are now vulnerable as well (as promised, you can opt-out.) Next up I'll continue tackling the siege items from the dev page. This will include stronger constructions and other defenses, and more varied invaders. More info as I go!

Does anyone know what exactly happens when you conquer a dark fortress with an underworld spire? Will goblin keep appearing or is it an effective way of exterminating them? My world has exactly 6 and I'm wondering if I should try claiming them all.
>>2030210My bet is that post world gen sim doenst really has any deep ramifications for thar, and mostly likely a gobbo will just replace their big boss clown.
To my knowledge, goblins only rely on the clowns for existence during the civ placement phase of world gen, where if there are no clowns to build a spire, no goblins are generated.
recently got back into the game after not playing since like 2014 and I've done a few small practice forts
I do some farming but I keep ending up relying on gathering plants to feed my dorfs
any tips on breaking this habit?
should I just embark with a bunch of seeds in some inhospitable shithole with no plants again and again until relying on farming becomes second nature
>>2030905You are not at fault here, gathering is pretty OP, specialy early on, and farming got a small nerf (but it still busted) anyways.
You can try settling in a embark that is 90% into a mountain so that you will have a limited amount of surface layer with plants, or in a desert/wasteland. Addtionaly you can try settling in a savage biome so that working on the surface will be more challenging with all the crazed giant bird trying to peck your dorfs brains out, if you want to somehow punish yourself for abusing plant gathering.

But yeah, /dfg/ on /vg/ has been an impossibility due to the amount of gacha generals speeding up the board while /dfg/ was activity and interest due to mostly slow and boring updates, and /dfg/ failling to keep up with the /vg/ speed and 404 every other week.
Most of DF discussion has been in threads here on /vst/ since some time after the release of 50.01 and the premium version. But since having explict generals was against the rules at the time, there was no /dfg/ until that changed about a year ago or so.

Make the quality of life of your citizens remarkable, develop a cultural staple that will cement your dwarves' legacy in this world.

>>2039069>>2039233Also this.
Start looking/studying/reading about IRL old architecture and city planing
No, it wont make your forts more effective or anything like that, but your forts will get more aesthetic, and you will have more wacky ideas to persue, if that is what you want
>>2029234https://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=183262.0
>>2039233What are the criteria for "remarkable" and "cultural staple"?
>>2040023There are several youtube videos or architectural books you can look up that could help define that than I can.
I did stuff like public forums, bathhouses, irrigation systems that all function with aqueducts made of marble as a way to mirror roman and greek architecture. I've seen some anons make rus-style designs for their castles and forts.
Really the main fun is when you process it in a 3D visualizer.
>>2040028There aren't any videos are books that list criteria that you can use to identify whether a fort in this video game is a cultural staple, actually. Primarily because there isn't any such thing as a "cultural staple" in dwarf fortress. That doesn't mean anything.

Cultural Architecture refers to the design and construction of buildings and structures that reflect the traditions, beliefs, and values of a specific culture or society, serving as the tangible manifestation of a culture's intangible aspects.

>>2040742> reflect the traditions, beliefs, and values of a specific culture or society, serving as the tangible manifestation of a culture's intangible aspects. There's your criteria and instructions.
>>2040743That's not a list of criteria. How would you determine when you've met these requirements while playing dwarf fortress? Do you know what "criteria" means?
>>2040743This also isn't a list of instructions, so I don't know why you said "there's your instructions".
>>2040830>>2040832You could find the ruling dwarves' thoughts, and implement their ideals in the form of architecture.
Find the gods that your Dwarves worship, and implement architectural designs that correlate with the particular god's values.
I hear Goblin Tools is a good AI tool that can break down tasks for you if you're too lazy or uncreative to think of your own.
You can make it so that your dwarves reach a 90% happiness, or maybe only nobles, or maybe ever dwarf has a coffin, there's no win or lose state in Dwarf Fortress other than not having dwarves in the fort, it's an open sandbox doesn't need requirements to satisfy your creative input, it's about expression and actualizing creativity you can also just stick a skull on a pedestal and call it a day, have some imagination.
There's your instructions & critieria.

Looking to get into DF. I have like 100 hours in Rimworld, so I'm not completely new to the concepts. How much do you think the game will still rock my world? Can I just learn as I go?
>>2041401>Can I just learn as I gonot from inside the game. Keep wiki up close.
>>2041401DF is not as complex as it seems. It has lots of granularity and some shit is confusing due to Toady's autism and lack of handholding, so you might need a keep a wiki in a different tab, but otherwise it is a straight foward game, and cheesing is pretty easy.
If comparad to DF, I would say that RW is much more gamey than DF with things like locking thing behind a research progression, or having mechanics that counter certain things like having bugs spawn in caves you digged for a base. Or even having an actual end game that players can aim for and have to spend resources nad research time to achieve. Meanwhile DF feels more like a sandbox, where you dont really have any strong other than having at least one dwarf alive, so you make your own fun, like building a mega project, and watch shit happens.
>>2041416nta, rim is the pinnacle of developer vs the player philosophy, i started with it and then thought that dwarf is kinda aimless and super buggy, after playing it for a while whenever i return to rimworld i either play on peaceful or disable the raids since i dont enjoy being beaten over the head anymore. How "playable" is the classic version? I heard that it has the same UI as the Premium version. If I'm going for the free version, should I instead go for an older version as opposed to the new Classic one?
>>2042617it's literally the steam version without their fancy tileset
>>2042617Do you hate the post 50.01 UI + controls?
Because they are basicaly the same across both paid and free versions post 50.01, and that the only reason why you would you play 47.xx, besides being a turbo grog who thinks that DF peaked when it was 2D
>>2042624>only reasonPost 50.01 is also a pain in the ass to mod/have different saves have different RAWs because they aren't baked into the saves anymore to support the workshop.
And square tilesets are still broken.
>>2042624No idea. Have practically not played the game yet.
>>2042659The bulk of the complaints over the new UI from the 50.01 onwards comes from people who were used to the old UI and dont like the new one because it was built with the new premium tileset in mind, and they they say that parts of UI look bad when on ASCII.
They also complain because the old controls were designed to be keyboard only, with mouse support being done through third party applications, and the new version isnt full keyboard since some stuff is mouse only for reasons, and this fucks their muscle memory.
So, if you never played the game before, you probably shouldnt worrie about half of this.
If you are coming back then you should consider if the changes are so bad for (you), that it doesnt justify thebenefits of playing on 5x.xx which so far have been mostly performace related and expanded modding capabilities.
>>2042689Thanks, this is what I was pointing at. I'll go with the newer one then.
How can I find soil when starting out? The spot I embarked on had "little soil". But when I dig into the mountain I'm greeted with cavern flooring. Should I be looking at the walls of the mountain before I dig in to maybe determine if there is soil behind?
>>2042823the spot you embarked on isnt a 1x1 (i assume) square, it may contain multiple biomes. Mountains dont have soil but the ground beside them could.
>>2042823It could be that you settled into a zone sharing two geologies, so the little soil, which means just a small layer of soil before you start hitting rock, could all tucked into one of the four corners of your map.

Also I'm a bit confused in regards to the framerate of the game. I've heard that it is tied to the game speed, but when I change it, it doesn't seem any faster to me. Should I just leave it at 50 (Graphical fps cap) and the "Game fps" to its default, which is 100?
>>2043138One is graphical fps the other is game logic ticks.
The default for the later, and the one you most likely changed, is 100. But it will slow down naturaly as the game progress due to extra stuff to calculate on the mao, like more dorf for example.

Should have spent more time training and less time in the tavern huh?
Newbie here, friend of mine who used to play had me try the game and I'm liking it quite a lot. Can I use this save on the steam version if I buy it? it's the same version so it should work, no? Also my friend suggested I use the lazy newb pack but it seems it's abandoned at version 0.47, what to do now? He told me stuff like soundsense, the dwarf manager and dfhack are kinda game changer and I should have them enabled, are they still uptodate for the free version?
>>2048031>Can I use this save on the steam version if I buy it? it's the same version so it should work, no?It should, but I remember that when I would change the tilesets back in older versions, it would cause some graphical fuckery in saves still using the other tileset, due to conflics between the tilesets files in the game and in save, this might not even happen here since the steam version has both ascii and the premium built in already. But if it does happen, the good thing is that it is fixable theoretically, since it this thing was fixable in older versions.
>Also my friend suggested I use the lazy newb pack but it seems it's abandoned at version 0.47, what to do now?Lazy newb pack was a third party df installer that helped manage tilesets, and other third party applications(df hack, mouse support, sound effects and more), and other stuff, mostly for newbs who didnt know how to install tilesets manually back before steam version introduced a bunch of those features and killed the tileset scene, plus DF hack can be also integrated through steam now. So you dont need to worry
>He told me stuff like soundsense, the dwarf manager and dfhack are kinda game changer and I should have them enabled, are they still uptodate for the free version?>soundsenseI dont know what is the status on this one, you probably wont need it on the steam version
>the dwarf managerYou mean Dwarf Therapist? It was a third party interface to help keep track of your dorfs and who is allowed to do what, since it was painful to this on the older version once you got to more 100 dwarfs. The changes in the DF UI made managing dorfs less painful, but Therapist is still being updated and working with the current version.
>DF hackIt is still being updated and working. You can even download it on steam and it will put on your DF folder
>>2048146Thanks for taking your time replying anon. I'll experiment another bit with the free version and post something in the thread. Then I'll buy the premium next sale.
>>2048031>>2048158Premium is just a tileset and some music, if you rip the graphics and music from the mega's "free" versions then it will work anyways.
As for it working, if it is the same version then yes it will, assuming of course that you have any mods that save is using as well, as post 50.01 dwarf fortress saves no longer have their raws baked into them.
I'm so bad at mining candy post-v.50.x it's almost funny. Or would be funny if all my best miners weren't dead.

>Release; Adventurers can create sites*, make stone axes, fell trees, perform carpentry, and construct buildings; Fortress mode work orders can now specify start conditions, restart frequencies, and how many workshops can be used*disabled in current version until toady reworks it
0.44.01 - 2017
>Release; can now send raids to other sites, build museums using pedestals and display cases, artifacts created during worldgen, civilizations can send spies to gather information on artifacts0.47.01 - 2020
>Release: introduced creation of guildhalls and temples. Introduced traitors and villains. Many new events in world generation, organizations, sites, pets and mounts in adventure mode, light aquifers. Those last two have much much more stuff in the change log due to Putnam beating DF into shape, if compared to the previous two, and it is better to read the full thing. But most of it until now has been reintroduction of features and technical stuff
50.01 - 2022
>Premium release: launched the paid Premium version on Steam and itch.io. Introduced graphics, full mouse support, a new user interface, tutorials, and new music and sound effects. A number of features from v0.47 were lost in 50.01 (see Missing features).51.01 - 2024(Adventure beta) - 2025
>Adventure beta: Adventure mode now available, with a new soundtrack and interface. Graphics changes, skill archetypes, Chosen mode, mysterious dungeons. Steam only.

He does have that kind of face desu.
Game theory incoming.
The sprites for human and dwarf faces are so similar that you can barely tell them apart if you're looking at them in game, they have those massive noses.
Humans are also generally the most likely to be friendly with dwarves because their cultures are very similar, the only things that differentiate them are the fact that humans are larger, generally more dangerous, more prone to violence/cruel acts. But otherwise they just act like aboveground dwarves, they like drinking and crafting things.
Conclusion? Humans are just dire-dwarves.
Do holdings do anything besides being a trigger fro noble promotions? They dont seem to generate historical figures on their own ( besides the 2 merchants that never come to your fort) and they dont seem to interact with the world at all., very disapointing. Wiki says holdings are supposed to send tribute but i think its bugged or not implemented at all.
What am i missing here?
>>2053044I think you have to demand tribute from them with a menssager, but Im not sure if this is right since I never bothered
I know you can tell your dorfs to fuck off to one of your holdings, and you can also request the holding to send you workers or your exiled dorfs back

Does anybody know, has Toady ever talked about what the plans are for ways to get stronger in adventurer mode or get your dorfs stronger aside from equipment and skills? As it stands we have a pretty realistic system where a lucky bolt can pierce almost any creatures brain and put it down instantly and the skin or a legendary combatant dwarf is not any stronger or more resilient then any other dorfs, but there is an intention to move the game towards high fantasy to my understanding, so will we get something like legendary dwarves having skin as tough as bronze through training, or maybe it could be from a magical tincture or a blessing from a god, it could even go mythological ala Sigurd bathing in Fafnir's blood, maybe a dorf that slays a megabeast or titan could get some type of boon either from ingesting a part of it or just as a godly reward, like if you slay a life sphere megabeast you get a boon from a death sphere god?
Not to mention that dragon bones are just as weak as turkey bones when made into armor and scales are currently unusable.
>>2053618sounds like you just need to do some alterations to your RAWS
>>2053618Don't know about adventurers but in fortress mode legendaries are just about invulnerable as it is. Only thing that can get them is exhaustion; then a random hit can cripple them through that comically overdone ragdolling mechanism.
I once had a fort where twenty legendaries beat a 1600+ strong goblin&troll&beak dog siege with about 700 invaders killed before they ran. None of the dorfs died, but nearly all had injuries due to ragdolling.
>>2053618I'm lazy and don't want to post the preceding lesser variants but is this the kind of thing you're asking about?

https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Creature_token#CREATURE_CLASS
Material force multiplier does make them overall more resistant, it is usually coupled with a material said creature is weak to, IE Silver for werecreatures, if you want them to be weaker to a specific material just replace the second NONE with a material (example [CE_MATERIAL_FORCE_MULTIPLIER:MAT_MULT:NONE:SILVER:10:1] which means it makes whatever it is affecting 10 times more resistant to everything BUT silver)

The syndrome shows up when you select a creature in classic fortress's Arena.
It doesn't show up in arena's creature creator because it is a Syndrome and not an Interaction.
as for testing strengthened tissues, let something start bashing at you and see what happens.
You may have to increase the values if you aren't satisfied

It only shows up as a mood thing not anywhere on the UI, must be something with the new UI, actually can you even see if you're a werecreature on the new UI? May be a limitation of this version.
As for toughness, I think it about makes you as tough as a dragon, cause the cave dragon I fought only shred my left arm even though it hit me on the chest that's only covered by bronze a couple times and didn't do much damage there.

That's why I said if you want a dwarf or human to become heat/fire immune you need to transform them into something that is.
which is also easy, as you can just make a copy of their creature entry and just add those in;
[FIREIMMUNE_SUPER]
[SELECT_MATERIAL:ALL]
[HEATDAM_POINT:NONE]
(REMEMBER TO CHANGE THE "NAME" of the creature entry IE [CREATURE:DWARF] to [CREATURE:DWARFHERO] as an example. Otherwise you'll have a duplicate RAW, which can cause anomalous shenanigans as the game spergs out trying to make sense of there being two of the same, (things like elf bone wood wagons and other weirdness))
(note: transforming also changes the age and phenotype/genetics of the creature, so you'll need to dfhack them back to what they are)

Actually can you do that? Create a spell that changes your body or applies fire immune I mean? For now it seemed spells are pretty limited to just throwing bolts of lighting and raising zombies.
>>2054328>Actually can you do that? Create a spell that changes your body or applies fire immune I mean?Oh yeah, you can do stuff like that easy, it's the same as I described before body transformation-wise, you just put an END on it so you transform back

>>2028502 (OP)Sometimes I want to make a basic no frills fort but always end up overcomplicating everything until the fricken thing is just sprawling and huge. My forts never feel very refined, they always seem to turn into 'borg forts' with just big square areas that sort of warehouse everything. They are functional but not very pretty, I notice a lot of nice looking forts are generally not very functional or do not have a good work flow.
I get a bit flustered because I tend to design monolithic forts, its a lot harder to improvise the design as you go and still have it work well, I always run into problems that tend to get worse the longer you use the original layout, and there isn't much cure except mining everything out and replacing it with constructions.
When I plan the fort out I end up with a lot of unused space and can get stalled out trying to improvise using the space I already have carved out before the proper setup is completely finished. I wish quickfort were a bit easier to use and didn't require a spreadsheet and had an in game interface to let you design and reuse designs / modules.
The whole fort seems to revolve around building around the aquifer and creating a resevoire, i see people build water and lava traps and just kind of wonder how they do it when its not set up in advance.
Certain things are always a pain, like digging a drain down to the cavern layer and building a grate so critters don't fly up my resevoire, and transporting lava to the surface it absolutely horrid and takes all kinds of micro, filling up minecarts with lava or setting up all your lava workshops down below in an improv setup.. pump stacks are not and have never been viable, i always embark with like 50 coal minimum cause its such a pain to bring magma to your forges.
There are so many things about this game that could use quality of life improvments, like maybe using buckets to haul lava or using wells to fill buckets with lava and water from deep below.
>>2060218I also hate that soil gives poor crop yields and muddy rock doesn't, if anything it should be the other way around.

Accidentally broke into hell while mining adamantine. Luckily the breach sealed itself immediately but there are now 100+ demons hanging around down there somewhere.
I was planning to retire this fortress after this year and visit it as an adventurer, but are those assholes going to be sprinkled around the fortress randomly like in the earlier versions? Playing .51.11.
does it bother anyone else that dwarfs seem to be cowards on average? i'd say 80-90% of all my dwarfs male or female are completely nutless losers with low-to-no bravery or taste for any kind of combat - yet they'll all be argumentative, whiny, and hard to please. like what do i have to do to get 5-10 main character tier dwarfs to make up the elite, the dwarf version of the round table essentially.
there's a billion ways to physically make them better with training and all that but can i edit dwarfs directly or run psyops on them or do i really just have to painstakingly hand pick guys with passable personalities for combat even if that means including total retards in everything else? because the charming, intelligent, empathetic, battle-ready dwarf comes around probably 1 in every 100 dwarfs with my luck - which is honestly the prototypical fantasy dwarf in my eyes but in chodey's it's apparently a gay black retarded dwarf that hates violence and crafting but gets mad when they don't scream at someone and make pube crowns
>>2064667I've never once curated what dwarfs I put into squads outside of any pre-existing combat skills
they all become hardened killers eventually
>>2064668yeah they do get numb over time to death but it still fucks with their personalities and can occasionally cause massive changes, i've had plenty of them get in a fight or two and even without suffering any injures - and mind you, some of these pussies don't even directly kill or injure any of the enemies themselves - they are traumatized for LIFE. like permanently in a bad mood all the time and even after the standard room upgrade + misting session + several month long stint of boozing, guilding, marrying, babymaking, etc, they're still presently displeased with life at best and grumpy and on the edge of total rage at worst
>>2064694Some people are just incompatible with life.

>>2064667>>2064694I just add [NATURAL_SKILL:DISCIPLINE:2] to all my sentients to mitigate the cowardice brought on by the new personality system. Do some still flee? Yeah, but more also feel compelled to continue fighting, it even causes a few to gather enough courage to join in occasionally.

such is life
Food should be a periodic problem for your fort. Farm yields should be lower and blights should periodically sweep through farmlands to encourage players to diversify their food sources with hunting, gathering, ranching, and fishing. Dwarfs should also crave a greater variety of food and generate unhappy thoughts if they're forced to eat raw foods for extended periods of time.
>>2066457I agree tha productivity should be much much lower, but I dont know about the periodical blight thing.
>>2066457>generate unhappy thoughts if they're forced to eat raw foods for extended periods of timeThey do though, they have a need to eat decent meals they have to fulfill.
>>2066579Maybe it should be more pronounced, then? I've gone years without cooking and only started doing it later on because it was more efficient and ensured farmers had plenty of seeds.
>>2066558Soil depletion would be ideal, but blight is easier to implement. Potash would actually have a use and crop rotation would be necessary. No more year round Plump Helmet farms. Either way, food insecurity is a major factor in shaping gameplay for other colony sims like Against the Storm or Songs of Syx or Rimworld.
>>2066684I think what it needs is to make ther process deeper and more dependant on a resource chain
Maybe plump helmet farms can be year around but only if you can keep supplied with constant stream of composture made out of rotting food and maybe gobbos
This kind of stuff is what makes Against the Storm interesting. Is having to use what you got in hands to go far, and trying to figure out the "pathways" to achive your objectives.

So I want to make a bridge that links 2 continents, this area over here is just 1 level deep. Any idea how to drain this so that I can build supports?
>>2071225I assume you either want to use draw bridges or you want support pillars for style points, because I dont think it would be nescessary if you were doing with floor tiles, unless something change, since floor tiles can be extended everywhere as long as they have one anchor wall to sit on top. Anyways, you will need a a bunch of pumps and some way to redirect all the pumped water to somewhere were it can go off map or that you dont care about flooding, so that the pumps can create "bubbles" of water deepth low enough were your dwarf can walk and build a walls for you fundation.
>>2071273Yeah I want an actual bridge that would work irl and not magical floors.
I get the pumps stuff, but I never really figured out how to build stuff on water. To pump water out I would first need to wall off the entire span of the soon-to-be bridge to block water coming in, this is the part I don't know. Do you just like, drop floors into the water and just hope they create a wall after they fall?
>>2071225>>2071273Or you can use arcane df minecart magic like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yopUbi2iVM
>>2071278>Do you just like, drop floors into the water and just hope they create a wall after they fall?I belive constructed stuff gets desconstructed when they colapse. Only natural walls form a new wall where they fall.
I think that for your case, you either have to drain it long enough for your dorfs to build the support, or parhaps you can cast the support from magma, but I dont remember right now if obsidian forms only when water falls on lava or if forms in any case (Am I mixing shit up with Minecraft????). Anyways you might have to do some testing to see if it works.
>>2071285>I belive constructed stuff gets desconstructed when they colapse. Only natural walls form a new wall where they fall.oh man that fucking sucks, getting magma up here would be a nightmare
I guess I'll just have to hope that the pumps are efficient enough to keep workers from harm
>>2071285>I belive constructed stuff gets desconstructed when they colapse. Only natural walls form a new wall where they fall. You believe correctly.
>330 hours in
>just figured out you can zoom out
>>2071225easy. Dig a channel underneath, towards the edge of the map, carve fortifications on the tiles bordering the edge, then dig an upwards ramp towards the water (your miner might not survive).
no pumps needed.
>>2071772I actually didn't think of that... yeah that could work. Just needs a drawbridge somewhere in the channel to stop the flow eventually.
>>2071775if that is ocean the channel might need to be pretty big, you could add extra chambers for protection.
Also jfyi floodgates can sometimes get destroyed by water (or by objects in the water idunno).
>>2071780Honestly that might take several fucking decades to even make a dent in the ocean. I just tested it out, the water doesn't have the pressure to even fill the channel properly.
I might have to do the minecart thingy, I'm starting to doubt if this is even possible.

>>2071788i would continue brute forcing it and just make more entrances towards the floor. Place a door (or several) behind the miner beforehand, then he will probably safely escape.
It is a big project yes.
It is possible i'm sure, but the scale depends on how many edge adjacent tiles of water are there.
Pump is more powerful, you may try it if you dont want to design the sewerage system
>>2071861pums doesnt need an energy source btw, you dwarfs can operate it manually. Its just inconvenient when there are a lot of them.
>>2071861Does it actually matter where I'm draining water from? Because you'd expect the 1 level deep area right next to the channel to get drained first, but I can see that what's actually being drained is some random area on the other side of the map, while that stays at 7/7. I guess that's just how water works here, looks like I have to drain the entire ocean 1 level down and not just this tiny area.
I guess I mights as well dig out the entire coast and connect it to the drainage channel then.
>>2072137>Does it actually matter where I'm draining water from? Because you'd expect the 1 level deep area right next to the channel to get drained first, but I can see that what's actually being drained is some random area on the other side of the map, while that stays at 7/7. I guess that's just how water works hereLooks like a quirk of the fluid code when there are large bodies of water. You can see the same thing happening in that video with the minecart drain system.
>>2072137water movement is based on simple physics, it doesnt teleport (usually). That area stays at 7/7 because that is where the water from the edges goes.
You probably need as many upwards channels as there are sources of water (tiles where water touches the edge of the map) for it to drain water faster than it replenishes.
>>2072157I expected the area near the bridge to be drained so fast that it would stay at 2 or 3 out of 7 while the rest of the ocean tries and fails to balance it out, but that's not possible considering that it flows at a trickle.
Draining from underneath the ocean should probably be faster...

I guess I'm just going to be completely reliant on elf and human wood for the rest of time, I guess. Somehow managed to attract enough carpenters for a carpenters guild too, glad they all moved here to sit around and make beds every other season

You know fey moods are a meme and everything but I kinda get it now honestly.
I've been watching youtube tutorials on making your own bow and I really want to do it, got all the tools and set a space up to craft only to find that my shit ass country doesn't have a hobby carpentry scene at all, not a single place near me that sells hardwood and I can't even order from anywhere, not even amazon carries lumber here, now I'm constantly thinking about bow staves and ash boards all fucking day.

Do grazing animals claimed as pets need to be pastured still? The wiki makes it sound like they still kind of do, or is feeding pets only really only a concern in a dire tantrum spiral?
>>2076109They usually eat whenever they pass near a grass tile, but sometimes animals just don't pass by any grass and then they are in danger of starvation.
>>2076109i just fucking smash all the pets migrants bring with a bridge, i have other things to worry about in my fort

Is there a way to add a tag or whatever controls how a creature acts without applying it to the entire race? I would like to get two giants in my fort and have them act as true members while keeping the rest of the giants the way they are. I would like to have a male and female and hopefully have them have a giant baby, thing is.. If I got that far would the kid come out "feral"? Is there any easily digestable guides how all of this works or how to achieve this?
>>2077195I'm only familiar with light edits to the raws. My guess is that you would have to create a copy of the base giant raw and add whatever tags are responsible for making them able to join/form civilizations. Then either hope that they happen to visit your fort as atraveler ask for permanent residency. Or use DFhack magic to make that happen, possibily even skipping the above so that the only civilized giants are the ones you used DFhack to spawn on your fort.
Effectively you would have two races of giants, one feral megabeast and another which are basicaly like dwarfs, elfs and the like.

>>2077264*Doing something like you want might require some form of DFhack fuckery one way or another
>>2077195if it is born within your fort as a sentient from members of your fort they automatically become a part of your civ, your local civ group, and therefore your fort
>>2077298This is good news. At least it implies that as long as I get the giants functional the family stuff works on its own downstream.
>>2077264Yeah I will make a test world and just see if I can do the spawning and editing. I think it would be really cool to make armor and maybe weapons for a giant if it works out.
