Also try to get chicken without milling them. 2 vills can get all the food in one run, that's worth it if you can sneak it up as you advance or a bit earlier and never mill your chicken.
>>2066042nta, but with chickens I just send the two villagers and also make sure that they only come back when actually full, even if that means leaving a bit of chicken to rot for a while, not sure if that is optimal however.

>>2066055Do 2 vills still leave something behind? I play a lot of Aztecs so that might be why it was enough for me. I like to send a bunch of pairs to get chicken when I click up since I won't be needing more vills for a while and it's ok if the food doesn't arrive isntantly.
>>2066073They don't completely fill up from one chicken, there's still some room, so once they finish that first chicken I make them kill a second one and take what they can before actually dropping off (which tends to be around half of the second chicken) that does leave some rotting but eh.

>>2067040Getting what's basically a food trickle when both herding and shepherding is retarded on top of compressed farms, double attack, and faster-producing trash units is the icing on the cake and all relevant so early into the game. I'm sure something here could be gutted out entirely. The other most frontloaded Feudal civ I can think of are Cumans and their extra options still come at too large of a cost in time to fully explore all of them in one game.

>do a bit of googling>Teuton trush is a thingAlright, you're right.
I have never competitive AoE2 Multiplayer in my entire life.
Also my mean APM jumped from 10 to 18 but I don't know how much that is owed to me rebinding my hotkeys (given I'm pretty sure I forgot my eco and blacksmith upgrades) and how much is owed simply to the fact I was doing stuff with my army.
>>2067870I'm sorry, but your sentence is syntactically incoherent. The phrase 'I have never competitive AoE2 Multiplayer in my entire life' is missing a verb—presumably 'played'—and fails to conform to standard English grammatical structure. A more correct formulation would be: 'I have never played competitive AoE2 multiplayer in my entire life.' Alternatively, for stylistic elegance, consider: 'At no point in my life have I ever participated in competitive Age of Empires II multiplayer.'
Linguistic precision matters.
If you had a civ that can make basically every unit (think all techs), but you had to give up two blacksmith techs, which two would you rather lose?
Was arguing with a friend about this, and we both agreed last archer armor would be one (since ranged units aren't really meant to be tanking hits a lot anyway) but disagreed on the second one. He said the last infantry armor cause it mostly just affects halbs (nobody plays champs) and having FU cavalry is more valuable, while I think Blast Furnace is less important since having a good meatshield in halbs is pretty crucial and squishy halbs would rid you of an important cav counter, and paladins and hussar still work perfectly fine without maxed attack (and camels rely on bonus damage).
Technically this started because I was arguing Byzantine paladins are still a nice unit (and the Byz tech tree is god-tier) even without Blast Furnace but got me thinking about upgrade priorities in general.
>>2067877I'd just get rid of another layer of archer armour.

If you did what you did in the first video and fixed those mistakes you could get above 1k elo.
>>2068325>your build order and scouting is at a 1k elo levelSo is everyone else's at this level, build orders are like chess openings in that nowadays everyone knows a few to a decent level. APM usually drops off a cliff after the memorised pattern.
>also you needed to just click your army into the enemy base earlier, your attack could of came in like 4 minutes earlier. That's true, I fumbled the bag because I built 3 militia, then went on to research arson and I was like "wait I want more men but I don't want to cancel my research", so I waited for that to finish then produced more men. Definitely a mistake owed to indecisiveness, which is a general issue with me in AOE.
>2nd video looked like a complete clusterfuck tho and looks like you decided not to play a standardish build order and didn't make a baracks and militia quickly like in your first video. The (apparent) lack of boar and scarcity of sheep threw me off guard and I was too busy trying to course correct that the errors stacked on top of each other. I think what delayed my barracks was something like

>>2068462One of my issues with it that I don't see discussed often is the narrator.
The "authentic" pronounciations are cringe.
If I set the game to English I expect the VAs to be native English speakers and I don't care that they mispronounce foreign words as long as they can speak the language harmoniously.
The whole "immersion" and "authenticity" is pseudo-intellectualism at best.
If I wanted accurate Chinese names I'd play the fucking game in Chinese, not this "and zheen Huooong hæn rheides zhe virrage" shit.
Everyone who complained about Chronicles having Bri'ish accents is a retard, and I say that as an ESL. The VAs had pathos behind everyline because they've been speaking naturally in their own language and performance is more important than authenticity.
I dread the day someone hires somebody from my country to do a shitty accent in Engrish.

>>2068494this post is extremely fucking retarded, the DoD campaigns also had native VAs and those campaigns are fucking stellar

>>2068587Yeah, you're right actually.
I was thinking of AoM retold as well as 3K, but it's 100% the direction or the actors.

To be frank though, and while this probably more concerns the AoE IV we got - I am of the opinion that later eras of history would probably make it increasingly challenging to retain the series' identity since it would be harder to give a sense of verisimilitude as things become more contemporary. AoE I-II already have weird anachronisms and choices, if we had a generalist 20th-21st century AoE then it would look even weirder unless the civs were designed around given conflicts. Rivet counters would probably die out globally from the sheer amount of blood vessels popped, meanwhile Red converts an Abrams to Islam.

How do people enjoy 1v1s? I've played a few dozen games and hit my 50% winrate spot (around 1,2k) and every game is exactly the same, win or lose. How does this effect AOE2?
>New linguistic findings show that the European Huns had Paleo-Siberian ancestors and do not, as previously assumed, originate from Turkic-speaking groups. The joint study was conducted by Dr. Svenja Bonmann at the University of Cologne's Department of Linguistics and Dr. Simon Fries at the Faculty of Classics and the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics at the University of Oxford.
>Bonmann and Fries analyzed linguistic data based on loan words, glosses in Chinese texts, proper names of the Hun dynasty as well as place and water names. Taken by itself, the data on each of these aspects would have comparatively little significance, but taken together it is hard to argue with the conclusion that both the ruling dynasty of the Xiongnu and the ethnic core of the Huns spoke Old Arin.
>The findings of the study also made it possible for the first time to reconstruct how the Huns came to settle in Europe: For the two researchers, place and water names still prove today that an Arin-speaking population once left its mark on Inner Asia and migrated westwards from the Altai-Sayan region. Attila the Hun probably also bears an ancient Arin name: Until now, "Attila" was thought to be a Germanic nickname ("little father"), but according to the new study, "Attila" could also be interpreted as a Yeniseian epithet, which roughly translates as "swift-ish, quick-ish."
>>2072893It doesn't affect anything, given that AOE2 never leaned into proto-Turkic design for Huns. Also the Hunnic Empire still contained the peoples they conquered, even if the Huns proper were Siberian.

as pole pocket, is it a bad idea to tech for szlachta privileges before getting knights out? feels like that makes it too slow if the opposite pocket goes for fast knights
>>2074653Its best to delay it a bit, yes.
>>2074670You can delay getting the tech if you need knights out in a pinch. I'm not really a fan of pole knights personally, you can get a faster timing to flood units with berbers, khitans or cumans.
>>2074749Polack knights go for quantity above while still being of a pretty decent quality, they do quite well against a lot of things with their main weakness being a properly defended mass of strong ranged units, though they've got decent arbalesters and skirms to deal with that plus the winges hussars, its a nice civ.
do you think a 20th century/modern setting could work for a future Age of Empires installment?
if I'm not mistaken, before Age 3 killed the franchise, the original plan was to have Age 4 take place in the modern world and Age 5 as a sci-fi game, correct?
>>2074754>killed the franchise for over a decade >DE killed itself again>not even going free-to-play managed to salvage it3 really is a cursed game, isn't it?
>>2074752They have like one period in the game where their knights are good (late castle to early imp) you want to swap to hussar or arb after that. I'm just saying that I dislike that civ because the timing for the knight flood is too late compared to other civs imo. Cumans can start flooding stepps at like 20 minutes after a boom and khitans and berbers have more control on the timing. Berber knights are cheap without needing a unique tech so no need to invest into a castle or the tech.
>>2074754According to that pic, yeah.
Maybe a mid-late 19th century into mid-late 20th century Age of Empires could work, although I'm not so sure about how it would work on the mechanics or nations to put in the hypothetical game, given most nations that would exist in the starting game would no longer exist by the Imperial Age of this game.
>>2074756The game was flawed from the beginning, it tried to break the perfect mold left by II by trying something more radical in gameplay mechanica than Mythology and it ended up blowing in Ensemble's face.
>>2074761>given most nations that would exist in the starting game would no longer exist by the Imperial Age of this game. That never stopped AoE1 from having Iron Age Sumerians or AoE2 from having Imperial age Goths.
>>2074754you can make ANY era fit AoE standards.
>uh ayksctuallyStar Wars Galactic Battlegrounds shows ANY setting will fit.
>>2074761mechanically my only complaint with aoe3 was the weird anti-micro shit they put in it. home cities were a fine addition if you discount having to grind to unlock cards, which I think they eventually removed. everyone knows the real reason aoe3 failed was because people are obsessed with medieval shit and barely even recognize that the 16th through 18th centuries happened.
>>2074754I don't believe that image was completely serious at all, III was ostensibly a spin-off originally too, but that said:
Ensemble
>ditched AoE I-II's formula but not before making a Star Wars game mostly lifted from II, but has things like shield generators and flying units>they then built off AoM's foundation for III instead before dying in the ass with HAAH WAAWRelic
>have made one (1) AoE game so far>have already developed WWII and sci-fi RTS series in Company of Heroes and Dawn of War, both of which have taken skubby or outright unpopular decisionsSo really, we're left with the modern era unchecked in spirit (with a single century seeing so much technological and geopolitical changes nonetheless) but I'd assume it would be too superfluous in the case of Relic, unless they focused on shit being more contemporary. Making it work though? The issue becomes keeping other AoE elements that aren't just 100 workers per player, lest it just turns into another generic WWII/modern RTS. And there's going to be a lot more guns than AoE III has, but maybe the Imperial Age will become nothing but drone strikes.
>>2074785If we had to get another fictional setting with AoE II mechanics, I honestly wanna see the Horus Heresy.
Eagles have more LoS than scouts but I'm 100% convinced the area of effect to get a sheep is the exact same as scouts because I always seem to not get the sheep unless i move the eagle to like 4 tiles into its LoS. With regular scouts if you see the sheep you get it, simple as, but not with eagles. Idk if this is an intended feature, a bug, or I'm insane and making shit up, but I could swear it's like that.
>>2074777True, a way to solve that issue in a smart way could be to age up some civs into AOE3-like revolutions, not at the first 2-3 ages, though.
For example ade Austria-Hungary in the Castle Age equivalent choose to either stay united or become Cezchoslovakia, Austria or Hungary, gaining some new bonuses and units but losing others in exchange to represent the issues that popped up after the dissolution. Same for Russia into the USSR. Nations like Germany could have a more extreme case (choosing which german state to ally into the first ages, stay imperial or become a democracy/nazi regime/communist state later on.)
>>2074852The Eagles simply have higher LoS to compensate for less speed.
>>2074876Thats not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about how the sheep won't become "mine" unless the eagle is very close to it, but with scouts it seems to be enough to have them within their LoS. I'm probably just crazy but it feels like that.
>>2074877The conversion range is more or less the same between all units and doesn't really have much to do with a unit's improvised LoS, then.

Its first expansion continues it with a little more historical basis, but the second pivots back to the historical format. In DE, they have historical battles instead of new campaigns in full.
>What the hell were they thinking?AoE III has more in common with AoM than it does its predecessors. As already outlined by the thread it's quite possible that it was never meant to have a number.
>>2075143they don't have bloodlines so they are balanced
Alright I gave aoe 2 definitive edition 2 chances and I'm quitting. Why does this game feel so 'off'? The game seems too zoomed out , everything is tiny, ai is brutal, the game is unnaturally sped up, like everyone is on crack and if I lower the speed then everyone is a geriatric , that's how slow they are. Beggining campaigns with Wallace and Joan of arc are boring. Wtf is everyone creaming over this game I dunno. Though I definitely think the Stormgates are cool, the player count spike from 0.5.0 compared to 0.4.0 was significantly smaller and much shorter lived and the review spike that came from 0.4.0 was huge and no such spike has come from 0.5.0
This leads me to think that the Stormgate player base is much like the Age of Empires 2 fan base, majority PVE players.
Once 1v1 gets to where it needs to be, I think the vast majority of resources should be put towards campaign development and beefing up the co-op mode. Co-op needs the promised glow up but also needs something beyond getting the heroes to level 20. A reward to keep people playing like SC2 has.
Campaign and co-op have way more monetization potential than 1v1 anyways. So focusing on selling new campaign chapters and new heroes is the best path forward, in my opinion.
Making the PVE modes hopping with active players will spill over to 1v1 anyways.
Your thoughts?

>>2078503They still lose extra food from sheep in Dark Age but yeah, they already keep most of the pastures' innate advantages even if they didn't have the ~7% advantage over farms they got now. Given that Wei's earlygame is still anemic and the lack of a nerf on Jians, it seems like a sloppy patch overall. Hopefully they're cooking up something more substantial.
>>2078535The Khitan can keept the pastures but lose everything else over to the Tagut.
>>2078623I wouldn't be opposed to more civs using pastures if they can properly balance them, at least I get the impression that they originally were given their production values are surprisingly high for farm expies. Up the cost to 120w, have no inherent collection 'boost' over farms, and they'll still have be safer and compact on top of having their own built-in drop-off point, while having room for civ bonuses yet.
Seems that a good few want them for Mongols but the same thing happened with Steppe Lancers and Mule Carts, and the devs were wise enough to only grant the former.
