Anyone remember God Games? I thought the genre was dead with Peter Molyneux basically dropping out of the industry, but I recently saw a game in development called Demiurgos which looks like an attempt at a new God Game.

Does anyone miss God Games? Would you actually like to see them return, or do you think the genre should stay dead? What would you want to see in a new, modern God Game?

I'd be happy with an update of Populous:TB:
>Higher resolution textures
>Modern UI/Control scheme
>Skirmish Mode (with actual skirmish AI) (and the ability to toggle the availability of certain spells/structures)
>More/bigger maps

I replay B&W every now and then.
Modern God Games are all boring snorefests with mobile game mechanics and too little throwing rocks around or having a giant pet leopards. Glorified strategy games at best, to be honest.

This actually mite b cool, though it's by the Per Aspera devs so hopefully they learned from that and don't bite off more than they can chew. I like whatever's going on with their political compass god karma thing

worldbox seems to be a decent enough god game

I like them but the soulfulness they had back then can't be replicated by modern games so meh don't really care about new attempts

I remember finding Populous 3 amazing and then being *really* disappointed by anything I bought with the God Game tag on it.
So I don't think I miss the genre, I just Populous 3 specifically.

I'd like to see Tyrants: Fight Through Time / Meg-Lo-Mania get a bit of press.

Populous II was one the first games I played on PC and I still undust it every 2-3 years and try to see how far I can get. I've tried to get into The Beginning for years, but I don't like the globe aspect, I think the concept does better in 2D.

B&W has been at/near the top of the gog community wish list for ages now. So there are definitely some people out there that remember it and want it back.

Last time I even thought about god games was maybe a decade ago, when some hack promised the coolest god game ever and then shat out some smartphone game garbage. I definitely would like to see more god games, I still remember being autistically obsessed with ants back when I was a child because I thought having an ant colony is the closest one can get to having one's own kingdom.

You should really check out the first one. It's much better and more polished but you do lose some city building things.
The game is begging to be played with VR gloves.

Deisim slightly scratched that itch for me. It's more of a tech demo than it is true god game, but it is VR or flat screen compatible

That hack was also Peter Molyneux, it was Godus. I don't know how he went from Black & White or Populous to that. But it's strange that it seems he's the only guy ever who wanted to actually make god games.

How exactly do you define a god game? I've heard Dungeon Keeper's defined as one being a Bullfrog game and how the minions can't be directly controlled (besides possession and the call to arms spell, latter of which costs gold to direct in a non-controlled area). How much autonomy should minions have for the game their in to still be considered a god game? Or is it more aesthetic/theme based?

There's a game I've been playing the demo for called Sintopia that seems to be a blend of city building (in hell) and then a more god game type thing going on in the earth part. I am looking forward to the EA release and I hope it's not bad. I've been enjoying the demo.
