Games like Anno?
Any games out there that are similar to Anno, so I don't have to deal with Ubislop's bullshit?
Anonymous No.2106028 >>2116301
depends what aspect you like about it, I find them a bit dumbed down for my liking
for me it's Settlers 2

It's one of those genres that is represented exclusively by a single series of games. Many such cases with strategy games.

Port Royale/Patrician/Rise of Venice/Whatever-they-call-it now is a different style of game it's more a business management game and any city building aspect is between non-existent and vestigial. Incidentally it also suffers from >>2106083, while the games may be called different things they are all made by the same studio and on top of it they are increasingly shitty and cheap looking while nobody else really tries to compete in a seafaring trader genre.

Closest thing to anno formula is Endzone 2, first one lacks the islands aspects, but second pretty much mad max anno just with low ground wastelands and habitable plateaus instead of ocean.

Once I found Tropico, I never went back to Anno. The original game is great, I also enjoyed 3 and 4. 5 wasn't bad, but it hasn't stuck with me like the others. 6 I haven't played yet.

I'm playing the 10th anniversary edition right now and realized how absolutely simple the game is. I've played the original settlers 2 as well as a kid and thought I was hot shit for being able to beat it (I also loved the godlike Europe skirmish map).
Now I see how hilariously easy the game actually is. Still fun though.

pls explain anon, i've always thought Settlers as an overly complicated game

I know settlers 6 was one of the least liked in the series but it was my favorite. The towns you can build are super comfy and the snow maps in the dead of winter with the light glow coming out of your houses are gorgeous.

I like the idea of Anno, but I find it manages to do a lot of the very common pitfalls of city builders. Too much of the game is waiting, arbitrary requirements for buildings, the economy encourages you to do very silly things. It also falls into the trap where it seems to run out of content the moment you learn the mechanics.

I just wish there was an Anno with reasonable economic modeling. Or, if it's not reasonable as an economic model, at least make the economy feel like gameplay. It doesn't feel like I'm managing a damn thing when I play Anno.

Uhhh maybe Farthest Frontier? But honestly just stop being a little bitch and play Anno 1800 because it’s amazing.

It's really not.
>You build a woodcutter
>Woodcutter goes and fells a tree
>Takes the tree trunk to his doorstep
>a settler picks it up and brings it to the next node until the trunk made it to the saw mill
>1 trunk = 1 piece of wood converted in the saw mill
That is the entire game. Every resource works like this, including food. One farm creates one grain, grain goes to mill, mill makes it flour, flour goes to bakery, bakery combines 1 grain and 1 water to 1 bread, 1 bread goes into any mine to create 1 iron or coal or gold.

It's literally babby's first 4x. The only "advanced gamer strats" necessary are for when you start clogging up your streets with wares because you built water wells everywhere like a cock. But like the first level alone already teaches you everything you need to know about this game, sans maybe building harbors and ships.

Very similar to how Tropico 4 is just Tropico 3 again

The new breed of city builders, Timerborn, Against the Storm, somewhat Songs of Syx have been scratching the Anno itch nicely for me.
It is a bit of a shame though about the mechanic of having islands connected by ships. There seems to be a lot of untapped potential still in it. You can get a bit of it from Timberborn with multiple settlements.

What's the comfiest city builder out there these days? Something that's not too shallow but still relaxing (preferably something that can invoke back the magic of watching little pixel people raise the entire city up bit by bit in Settlers 2 back when I was a kid)?
I don't really have the mettle to learn how to handle W&R, Impression games are all fine but they are anything but relaxing, same with Frostpunk . I liked Tropico series, but tbf once you have basic economy set up and start breaking even not a whole lot happens there. I was thinking of trying anno 1800 but fuck the ubisoft's launcher.
Cliff empire was unexpectedly nice.

best thing I've found is Songs of Syx - early access but has a free demo
really comfy and relaxing to watch
the dev is certainly passionate about it too

I think I might have played the demo some years back, it was kind of obtuse, but I also didn't put much heart into it. Well, nothing hurts to try again if it's demo, thanks for the recommendation.

Both of these are like Mini Annos. They feature trade between settlements and supply chains, but they don't have as much stuff because they are indie games.

Endzone doesn't have "islands" doesn't it. It has a different kind of world map. The sequel is more Anno like with plateaus dividing by wasteland that works like anno, but access to other parts of the map is progression gated and you are guaranteed to have functionally identical islands.
Same with surviving the aftermath. Haven't played Cthulhu.

>>2135401
I did like before we leave. It was a simple game but I enjoyed it still. There seems to be a sequel game in priduction but it goes all in on the adjacency/puzzle placement and no trade.
