being able to become a vassal at like tier3 is the problem. One AI war you can't stop and suddenly your 6 hour old campaign sees you with 4 castles you can't defend and an army you can't pay because you did the 2nd dumbest thing possible other than starting a player kingdom.
As a mercenary the midgame actually works as well as the system is able to

What still kills the game is that the only way to buy fiefs is to do the iron caravan buy-sell glitch, which gives you real progression to spending the time to stack millions as a mercenary; buying a correct culture safe location fief. That then allows you to continue doing what you do in the infinite AI wars without having some worthless frontier castle or twelve the AI will never defend for you.
