> tfw always only mediocre at best in RTS games
what causes this and how do I get over it?

it it even fixable after almost a decade of RTSing?
it's like I get super bad tunnel vision and stop thinking
meanwhile some Boomers in their mid 40s kick my arse

it's not even about the games itself but I am worried that this problem might manifest itself IRL as well

I would assume that making a conscious effort to mind your micro and macro as well as efficiently using hotkeys and such would help
But honestly you should play for fun not to improve

The one common resource you manage across all RTS games is your attention economy. The quicker you can formulate a plan for a given section of a game (like your base) or a given situation (a skirmish in progress), the faster you can act on it and move to your next situation.
If you are "slower", you will need to think longer about which build order to use, you will react slower to sudden situations like a raid or gank, and you process less data in the same amount of time someone smarter than you does, leading to more mistakes.

This can be mitigated by just playing the game some more. The more you play, the more situations you have already encountered and you can rely on muscle memory and knowledge to deal with situations instead of thinking about them. The "tunnel vision" happens when you are at max capacity mentally, your brain locks up because it's overloaded with information so it tries to narrow the information stream.

Play more = git gudder. The smarter you are, the less time you need to improve. This is by the way completely transferable to anything in real life.
You do get slower with age. There is nothing to be done about that, it's a biological process.

Just accept that you'll never be super skilled and have fun either comp stomping or playing with other casuals.

I've thoroughly given up on RTS and now argue competitive RTS games should be banned because only retarded faggots who hurt my feelings like them.
But I had a similar experience of getting tunnel vision: I couldn't multitask, would get absorbed in one little thing (either base building "perfectly" or tech rushing or microing "perfectly") and then after some time being distracted by that I'd get reminded I've lost the entire rest of the game.

IRL I'm "intelligent" but bad at everything, never succeed at anything, no plans work ever, and then I was told I was severely retardedly ADHD. So in my personal experience RTS games test for actual, real mental ability better than any school or university test.
When I was 14 teachers told me I was smart but needed to work harder. When I was 14 RTS games told me I was retarded and should become a manual laborer.

I enjoy RTS like Dawn of War and Company of Heroes where resources are obtained through capturing locations on the map. It gives you natural areas to fight in and it let's you focus on combat rather than worker units. CoH will often have multiple fronts so it still requires you to multitask and be aware of the whole map but it's a more fun type of stress because it's the same type of management you do all over the map.

My least favorite RTS design is Age of Empires style where resource gathering seems to be the main thing. Always producing villagers, always moving them around between resource nodes, always protecting your own or attacking your opponent's. Way too intensive in both micro and macro for worker units and it feels like such a chore. I doubt I'd ever git gud at AoE even if I tried because your attention is always split between combat and resource gathering so it's a more demanding type of multitasking (to me at least).

I don't know which games you have played OP but Dawn of War is definitely the easiest RTS I have tried but without being so simplified that it's bad.

Yeah same. RTS games were always quite the reality check for me.
None of this matters though anon. You don't need to be smart to be successful. Just lucky.

Get yourself some amphetamines brother.

Why compete? Tbh multiplayer isn't even real gaming because it isn't a set challenge. It's the story campaign that matters.

Every RTS has its own 'correct way to play it'. You just have to pick up a guide and practice until your fingers bleed, until you can play in your sleep, until you can think about nothing other than how to crush your enemies in the most optimal way.

Rts was ruined for me by people acting like it's a sport and clicking as fast as possible. Im trying to relax, but playing against a sweaty faggot who thinks he's playing cod s&d.

Same. Always felt shitty. Just isn't fun. I like comfy challenges net boiling everything down to a hyper specific math formula.

Why the fuck are you two playing multiplayer if you don't like competition? Just play against the computer.

Just play an RTS game with ranked matchmaking i.e. all of them
What even is this question? Even Broodwar has ranked matchmaking.

You have to study the game. A B test and learn what units are best for what scenarios.

Im like you. I love strategy games but I'm pretty midling at them all. The only ones im not shit at are Total War since ive been playing since shogun 1 in 1999.

I hate microing workers too. I wish I could just issue a command like "I want 10 guys on wood" and the game would handle the rest, but still allow a manual override if it's needed.

In Warcraft you assign your workers to gold or lumber and then only move them around when they are being attacked. If you go more automated than that I feel like you are better off getting rid of workers all together and do resource gathering in a different way like CoH.

I would also like to throw out Men of War, which has no resources or workers at all and is quite a damn fine RTS/RTT.

Empire Earth 2 has something like that, there's a strategic map where you click on a resource and it puts any idle workers on it.
