Anno thread.
Anno 117 gets a timed demo tomorrow. Expectations? Personally I hope they don't fuck it up, anno 1800 was great.

Looking forward to the demo. loved the setting and gameplay of 1800, I'm not that much into Rome, but the game does look interesting anyway

Idk, 1800 was great at white-washing colonial exploitation in a ridiculous way. Journaleros and Obreros are all smiling happily while they toil away to bring tobacco, sugar, coffee and cocoa to the mainland, and get nothing in return.

I had this dream Anno game dreamed up of basically it was a solar system trading game but I agree with >>2135990 it becomes too abstract. Like trade ships and space combat but it'd be hard to make all the planets/moons feel important and interconnected. I thought 2205 would go that route but instead they did their poor DLCs rather than full moon/planet expansion.

The other idea that would work would be a ww1-coldware/modern setting focused on freeways, airports, etc. Large project could be giant projects or something simple like a space race. Now that I'm thinking about it it'd be even better now with the re-addition of ground combat. Aircraft carriers, Anti-aircraft guns, nukes, troop transports, beach fortifications, Saving Pvt Anno.

I'd love an Anno '45 where it's immediately after the setting's equivalent of WW2, and you are tasked with rebuilding but the area is divided between NATO and the Soviets so you have to manage two populations.

The Anno devs do not like to portrait "negative" parts of history. That's fairly common knowledge among the community. War is minimized and never the focus. Slavery, drugs and suffering in general is kinda brushed over or ignored.
That's a stylistic, deliberate choice on their part. We'll never see a cold war style Anno I don't think.
That said, if the devs were to make such a game (and best not call it Anno), it could be super interesting. Devs are German, they certainly have family members remembering living in the GDR, the older ones among them first hand.

The most comical woke shit in 1800 is the female arctic explorers. I'm expected to believe women were climbing mountains in the arctic. Women as crew on ships that are on months long voyages is absurd too. They'd all be raped and pregnant by the second week and the ship would need to turn back.

That one is not historical but 2070 is a postapocalyptic setting where resource shortages, nuclear war and climate change presumably made most of the mainland uninhabitable and people live on islands now so there's that. The game is pretty environmentalist so I guess that checks out with the more liberal sensibilities and not necessarily in conflict and even the capitalist megacorp is portrayed as a somewhat reasonable while the greens are not all good and have eco terrorists.

Some have tradeoffs, like garum gives an income boost but a happiness penalty because it smells or some workshops having fire risk. I've also noticed on the tech tree that some nodes give buildings new effects. Like from early techs fisheries don't do anything by default but they can have more income or weavers also giving tech points.
So yeah, it's encouraged that you actually weave in your production buildings into the settlement instead of just squeezing them in the corner somewhere.

2205 is utterly shallow. No AI competitors, replaced with a comically evil moon terrorist that you only interact with in arcade style combat maps that don't actually matter.

I didn't say "the combat sucks", in fact the combat mechanics in 2205 are okay in an arcade-y sense. Easy, but acceptable. >as has been the case with the secondary session in every Anno
The Moon was the main selling point so should have received more focus. Without the lunar colonies, 2205 wouldn't even be capable of justifying its own existence.

Maybe some of my picks might be controversial.

Closest to must haves imo:
Bright Harvest:
>tractors make a huge difference for farms
>arguably maybe too huge
>also adds silos for animal farms
>increase productivity in exchange for grain/corn consumption
Land of Lions:
>adds another completely new region in not-Ethiopia
>adds items and the Research Institiute
>the institute can create almost every item
>also allows changing deposits and fertility and moving clay deposits and oil wells on an island
Seeds of Change:
>adds a hacienda for farming in the New World
>has strong farming modules and meh residence modules
>also gives access to some policies like reduced residence needs
>also adds fertilizer silos as equivalent to the grain silos for crops
New World Rising:
>allows using electricity in the New World and adds a 3rd pop tier in it
>adds 1 huge island into the New World with a dam monument which produces electricity
>allows upgrading Hospitals, Fire Stations and co. in exchange for needing to supply complex goods

Mostly add more stuff and late game but don't change things as fundamentally:
Sunken Treasures:
>adds a 2nd Old World region
>including 1 huge island,Crown Falls, for building large cities
>also adds some item crafting
Empire of the Skies:
>adds rigid airships for transport and combat
>adds the postal lifestyle need which is another source of income and population
High Life:
>extra endgame challenge
>skyscrapers allow stacking more investors and engineers into less space
>in turn they demand new goods and buildings while incurring maintenance
>perfect "I want more endgame content"
Tourist Season
>adds Tourists as auxiliary Old World population which only visits to pay for stuff but isn't a work force
>care more about attractiveness and culture buildings
>adds new production chains to satisfy their needs
>another mid-late game "challenge"
Anonymous No.2159904 [Report] >>2159968 >>2168437
>>2159765
If you want to complete the collection:
The Passage:
>adds a completely new region in the arctic
>adds an airship, gas power plants instead of oil and is another source for fur and gold
>also adds some item crafting similar to Sunken Treasures
>kinda got power creeped by later DLCs
Seat of Power:
>adds a palace which can give long range boni depending on the modules build
>can also use policies for even stronger and more specific effects
>neat for optimizing an island, especially Crown Falls, but far from a must have
Botanica:
>only adds another Zoo equivalent for plants
>gives extra attractiveness but that's it

A group of its own:
Docklands:
>allows bartering goods through the docklands harbor building
>could be in the same group as Tourist Season and co. but is actually very impactful
>kinda busted with items where exporting a product can support the resources required to produce it and then some

do the silos actually work out as a positive trade?
Anonymous No.2159951 [Report] >>2159956
>>2159927
Yeah.
A silo increases productivity by 100% and gives 1 extra good every 3 cycles.
So a pig farm for example goes from 1 ton per minute to ca. 2.66 tons.
Or in other words 2 pig farms with silos produce slightly more than 5 and 1/2 normal farms
And 1 basic grain farm can support 5 silos. Or to keep with the example 1 grain and 6 pig farms produce slightly more than 13 pig farms on their own.

To put that into perspective you get for 170 farmers and 220 upkeep what otherwise would require 390 farmers and 520 upkeep.
And if I'm not wrong you need 240 tiles for the pig farms + silos and another 156 tiles for the grain farm for a total of 396 tiles.
Compared to the 546 tiles for 13 pig farms.

The problem is there is never any market crash or low inventory events or a disruption in the service, it even works after you wipe out all factions, it is magically spawned items on the clock, and it can bring so many items you can use it to supply saturate a big island with it, it's not just *a few extra items* or a little helping surplus to help with high-demand, it's a shitload of items.

Some of them are very late game item chains that take a long time, effort and space to make, and it works per island so it quickly gets out of control.
it would be fine it it were only raw materials and some basic byproducts so you can make up for lack of raw resources on bad islands but high-end shit is too much feels like cheating when I can print late game cars and machines from this sekrit shadow superpower faction.

I didn't mean items as in goods but trade union items which make docklands "broken".
The unlock conditions for higher level trades alone makes it less appealing than setting up your own manufacturing line.
And where it actually gets cheaty is when you add trade union items that give extra goods and/or change the input.
The Fine Cake Decorator, which is just rare, for example allows you to import grain, mill it to flour, bake it into bread and get chocolate along side it.
The 10 tons/min grain would not only get you 10 tons/min of bread but also 2tons/min of chocolate.
Chocolate which you can export for 28 tons/min of grain.

Anno 1800 has an item balance issue not docklands.

They had what, 4 dlc packs previously? So that'll be the first wave. Egypt was always a safe bet since the big schtick in Egypt would presumably be the (anachronistic) ability to make big monuments like the worlds faire. I Legit thunk on what else they could do regionally. IF 1:1 then:
Old world: Rome
New world: Albion
"Big fucking island to build a fun city": Probably the pyro DLC.
Ethiopia place I forget the name of: Egypt
Arctic: ??????
It isn't likely to go to the far east but I think it'd be neat to have instead of irrigation have it be terraces from mountains for rice. I'm just not sure of what else it could be. Maybe the near east with it being a focus on trade (lots of smaller islands you need to coordinate between), or

I watched Nirvarious play the game for a little while in his video yesterday. It looks just okay. Honestly it feels like the game has repurposed 1800 assets. Just feels like an expansion rather than a new game 6 years later. I love Rome and will probably buy it but I'm disappointed. I think that is somewhat unavoidable.
1800 was good, really good, and most of its, many, DLCs were pretty great too.

The devs have very little incentive to switch up a successful and well liked approach to the game . So all we can see are some iterative improvements like multiple goods fulfilling the same need and buildings giving boni from residences.

Slavery during the Roman Empire was a complicated subject, and very detached from the circumstances of slavery in the modern period. In fact, it was the opposite in many ways.
While slavery in the United States for example was mostly agricultural, the Roman public hated agricultural slaves because they displaced small farms with big estates and resulted in mass unemployment. Contrarywise, slaves in the Roman Empire were used to brute force any given industrial or construction problem; and arguably prevented Rome from entering an industrial age equivalent because any of their era's problems could be solved by slaves and there was no need for machines or mills to do anything.

... and still don't see the appeal. Now I have a game I can't refund and don't play, because it's just not interesting to me, and having mechanics that don't really appeal to me (I still consider the "dual cities" from 1404 to be a terrible design choice that removed me out of the game 30 minutes after I reached that point of development - and 1800 asks me to handle colonies for supplies)

4K60FPS on Ultra is borderline impossible - unless you give in to capitalism and pay Nvidia horrendous sums of money for their flagship model, 4k30FPS is a possibility, because this is still anno we are talking about and 30FPS are sufficient for that. I am not even going to consider the 144fps target, because a) why would you need it, and b) it's not like any card can deliver that right now anyway.

For the average joe: You'd expect modern medium price range cards could run this game at Ultra-1080p-60FPS, but they mostly don't. All the raytracing benchmarks are with upscaling enabled. Even with that you gotta have at least an RTX 4070 to run it, and it does not become any better without Raytracing but in native resolution. What most importantly was not tested: Raytracing in native resolution. You don't have to be an expert to guess that the numbers there will look even worse.

There is no card under 500-600€ that can run this game on Ultra settings at Ultra-1080p-60FPS according to these benchmarks, and the real numbers with those cards on your PC will be worse, because you'd not likely pair them with one the markets best CPUs available (Ryzen 7 9800X3D). I'd be interested in performance tests with medium and high settings to see how well you can play on affordable GPUs, but one thing is for sure, this game eats most GPUs alive and you will have to lower your settings even on Full HD.

And as a cherry on top, just look at the city they built for a moment - PCGamesHardware themselves acknowledge that real cities will be much bigger, and they just didn't have the time and permission to grow a city to that level and will deliver benchmarks with a big city later. If you recall the performance impact of big cities in 1800, this will likely be the same in 117 as there is not much you can optimize about rendering a metric ton of game objects.

I'm hoping 117 is optimized enough to hand 4k on high-ish settings with minor upscaling to achieve consistent 60 FPS+, but we will see.

Science says you're wrong
Here is the key historical evidence for Sub-Saharan Africans in the Roman military and society:
1. The Ethiopian Soldier (Britain, c. AD 210)
Who: An unnamed soldier, referred to in the historical text Historia Augusta as an Aethiops quidam e numero militari (an Ethiopian from a military unit).
Significance: This is a direct textual reference to a Black African serving in the Roman army, specifically in Britain at the far north of the Empire. The account describes his extremely dark skin being noted as an ill-omen by the Emperor Septimius Severus (who was himself from North Africa). This confirms that individuals of Sub-Saharan African descent were integrated into the Roman military, though his rank is not specified beyond being part of a unit.
2. General Presence in the Military
Auxiliary Units: It is known that Black African soldiers were often recruited into auxiliary units. Trade routes and military expeditions extended into the Sahara, and the Romans had contact with kingdoms south of Egypt and North Africa.
Archaeological Evidence: Excavations, particularly in Roman Britain, have uncovered skeletal remains that, based on DNA or cranial analysis, suggest Sub-Saharan African ancestry. The "Ivory Bangle Lady" from York, for instance, was a wealthy woman of African descent, suggesting that some individuals had achieved high social status, whether through birth, marriage, or as highly-valued freedpersons.

The reality is that Rome likely used North African cavalry auxiliaries in Britain because Rome always farmed out its light cavalry to foreigners. well it's not my problem because I'm not buying this crap of a game. It's Ubisoft's problem and their bottom line problem.

feels like a reskin 1800. I'll wait till it's on sale for $5 and pirate all the dlc like I did with Anno 1800

It has a time limit and kicks you out of your game after an hour or something like that. The demo was met with a bunch of bombed reviews so they disabled them on steam.

>visually not that impressive but requires 100 gigs and insane system specs
>dogshit demo
>soulless ui, shittier portraits than anno 1800
>no sexo females unlike 1800 to grab the eye
>negrious africanus crimus to chase away the eye

To me the gameplay look better than 1800. But in all other aspects it seems worse. I want to play it. But the barrier of entry is too steep.
