I used to do that as a kid but I can no longer derrive entertainment value from roleplaying and sandbagging against easy AI.
Maybe this is just an age thing, or I just lost my imagination when I wasn't supposed to but either way it doesn't work anymore.

It's the desire to punish yourself for your own shortcomings that can only become apparent as you grow up and not reach any of your desired goals.
You try to "earn" at least something, have some kind achievement, even if only digitally, and cheating it all into your hands is what you can't do irl, just like your dreams never came true, so you're just reminded of the childhood you wasted and the potential you never actually put to use.

I also used to spend forever in map editors basically using it as toy soldiers rather than make any proper scenario too. I can still play open ended sandbox games and I like building for aesthetics (though I'm not that good at it in any game), but I can't just wilfully play the game "wrong" in general. Maybe this is some sort of challenge or competitiveness thing. You might be right that it has to feel like some sort of "achievement" no matter how petty and not just play in the way child does.

SOUL. I used to do stuff like this including giving the AI resources while they were losing, and pulling back, hoping it would prolong the fun.

I don't know, I still have my imagination, but it feels pointless to use an unrelated game to play it out rather than drawing a map, or writing about it, or even just purely using my head.
