colonial provinces don't impact your literacy rates but colonial pops count for your 2% clergy and 1% bureaucrat percentages
the clergy part is bad in the early game because early game is all about getting the ball rolling. you want to get medicine, maybe squeeze in a tech that will get you money like market structure, mechanical production or practical steam engine, then stop on january 1st 1939 to save up for idealism. being stuck below 2% clergy will fuck your ability to do that
bureaucrats are a constant problem because unaccepted pops don't become bureaucrats and having less than 100% admin efficiency will reduce all pop promotion speeds
later on there's also the issue of clreks, which also increase your research point generation. having a country be primarily colonial pops means you'll have comparatively few clerks. which is why englands gets that boost to research for controlling india. without it they'd be 3rd world tier

Wars are super annoying too, it's like the game expects you to have troops on every single city because the AI will randomly declare on you while you're on the other side of the continent and just take all your shit
Units also don't despawn after you take all the cities of a faction, which is incredibly annoying, since they'll just go and take a random city and have a domino effect from there

Vicky 2 Russia played well is stronger but France is the easymode choice where you can only loser if you sit on your ass and let Germany form. Russia requires you to be really smart about balancing things so that you're close enough in miltech early game to overwhelm with your numbers while growing your literacy and economy to be a superpower by the 20th century.

We are now lean and mean. More than capable of going toe to toe with 90% of adversaries.

Some observations so far:
Blockades cause devastations which will go on to greatly harm Ming's mandate. If you can't beat them in a straight up fight then see if you can play the long game with blockades.
Philippines is a terrible node because only Canton goes into it. The local trade value also really sucks at the moment but I think that changes as time goes by.
You can go well over the naval mandate without causing severe damage to your economy. I am about 20 ships over my limit and the extra costs are only 4 ducats.
Hindu seems to be a decent religion. They can pick from a load of bonuses every time they get a new ruler and their missionary strength is good enough to convert Muslims.
The AI around the Indonesian area is really bad. I think that they struggle with getting their units onto boats.
