hard to say...maybe civ 4, ck2, eu3, stellaris, warcraft 3, heroes 3 or TW:Warhammer 2

Civ 3. Used to be Stellaris until they reworked the pop system for the 6 millionth time. But Civ 3 with the expansion mod never gets old for long.

Civ 3, I play the grand strategy games occasionally, but civ 3 just has that easy to start and go vibe, so whenever I want something quick it's civ 3.

Used to be Civ 5 but I've actually stopped going back to it after like a thousand hours of it.

i tried the remaster but didnt like it. i normally play dark crusade, so the remaster only having ss for skirmish sucked. i tried to use dc skirmish through a mod but it kept crashing, so i refunded the game. they also lowered unit collision size for better pathing, but it makes squads blob up more and causes its own problems. i thought the graphics looked nice though.
if i liked ss, i probably wouldve kept playing despite the pathing "fix"

DotA2 by total time played. I've played with the same group of 10 or so guys since 2012, we usually do three to four hours every Friday and Saturday night.

Beyond that, probably a Paradox game (CK2, V2, EU3/EU4, Stellaris), but my time is split against all of them. Less strategy like games would be something like FTL. EVE Online would be my absolute most time spent in any game if you count that as strategy, but a lot of my time is spent idle and only about 2% of the time I actually play is spent playing it as a fleet commander.

Civ3 but like >>2141048 I've sort of burned out on it after >1k hours. I'll still play a few hours through the early game here and there but full games take a long time and there's other games out there I want to play. It's the best $5 I ever spent on Steam, that's for sure (I also played the CD version long ago but I didn't own it).

Close runner up is Rise of Nations, probably not by hours played (though I played a lot in my childhood) but for an hour or two of chilling out it's still the standard for me.
Anonymous No.2141332 [Report]
yeah I'm a gamer
Many other strategy games with <100 hours, but these are the top

AoE2 > EU4 though

Original War because even though it's literally unfinished slavjank it had a great campaign and a solid multiplayer community that gave me IRL friends because of it. I even went to one guy's wedding.

Used to replay Total Annihilation but stopped eventually because of the poor pathfinding. It would be nice if the campaigns got ported to Spring Engine.

CK2. Probably in my top 3 games of all time, I just find the combination of grand strategy with the roleplaying aspect to be amazing. I have a pretty neat modlist, and playing the game with it is an amazing experience, there are so many opportunities and so much shit to do on each playthrough. I understand why they did it financially, but damn it, I'd give anything for Paradox withholding the release of CK3 and giving us some 4-5 more DLCs before abandoning 2. Alas, what is done has been done, and now we have CK2 and CK2-but-worse-but-better-graphics.

It's campaign is shit but it's mostly because it broke Dark Crusade's balance with a bunch of flying units and two extremely unbalanced factions that never got patched. Dark Eldar are so overpowered they're basically unbeatable in a competitive setting so most mp players unironically went back to dark crusade after the release hype wore off and have been there ever since.

I played the crap out of skirmish last year, playing on normal, hard and eventually hardest difficulty where the AI starts to pull off some interesting plays. Unfortunately it cheats and that wasn't fun, especially against Ottomans. It also sucked that they suddenly dropped support and cancelled the new DLC.

It used to be Rimworld, but now mostly Victoria 3, Caveman 2 Cosmos or some other non /vst/ game.
Rimworld used to be interesting, with new mods coming out, newer and better collections (like fernworld). But now it's stale, new DLC is a copy of SOS2, Rimworld still lacks empire management, proper diplomacy, proper progression and better item scale. Instead they just rehash already implemented ideas from mods and let Oskar steal even more ideas, repackage them as VE and generate Patreon bucks for himself. Really sad that Rimworld has degenerated into this.

Adding to this, I have a surprising amount of time played on Frostpunk 1. Over 1k hours, mostly because I find playing the Winterhome and Last Autumn scenarios pretty comfy. Neither of them are really challenges because I know them in and out, but I like to mix it up a little each playthrough and really just like the progression of each, Winterhome going from a ruined city into a metropolis that becomes a ghost town and Last Autumn watching all the workers work eight hour shifts each day slowly building up the generator.

A handful
>Civ 2
This game could be run on a smart fridge and it's still great. I am still playing it on a regular basis and always installed (especially since it takes close to zero space)
>Pharaoh & Emperor
I've got an archaeology degree because I've played those a lot as a teen, and I STILL return to them
>SMAC
Peak Civ experience, always installed, always ready to get one more Gaian victory. Rainy day and nothing to do with myself due to nobody being available? That's SMAC time.
>HoMM3
I'm a Pole, this is effectively a national sport here.
>Settlers 3
I know the Amazons campaign by heart, and it's still fun as fuck. I also like the RNG maps from the anniversary re-release
>Ufo: Aftermath
This is a deeply flawed game, but even with its flaws, it scratches just about every itch I've got for X-Com like (especially since I hate actual X-Com games)
>Empire TW
This game is fucking garbage, the mods aren't really fixing it, and I still have over 10k hours into it. I installed Steam back in the day just to play it online
>Curious Expedition
I consider it a honorary strategy game, since its intense on inventory management and planning your moves to know when and what. The fact that the sequel learned all the worst lessons from the original only adds to how great the original is.

Eu4, though after 4k hours I've started going to it less and less. I'm actually trying to play less games in general. I noticed that I tended to play Eu4 when I had nothing to do purely to burn hours. Now, when I get the urge to play, I go watch anime or do some work around the house

Serious question what do you do after 300 hours of paradox games ? Ive got 200-500 in most of them and I feel like I've seen everything and its not even immersive anymore I just see numbers and dice rolls. I guess mods help but 4k hours ?

Dota 2, probably played that for close to 15 years now if you count Heroes of Newerth. I stopped playing like 2 years ago because the playerbase is psychotic.

HoI3 with black ice,
Meiou and Taxes 3.0,
Tiberian Sun and it's mods. Dawn of the Tiberian Age is quality.
CoH3 was fun for PvP, but the devs have no clue how to balance and are dead set on raping it with dlc.
