why do people pretend it's worse than the original?

Because sadly it is true. just EA doing usual EA things. It had amazing ideas but it was far too ambitions for its own good and released in a half finished state.

>everything is less responsive, from picking up/dropping creatures to building rooms and using spells to basic menu navigation
>game's overall pace is much slower
>music and artstyle are inferior, which leads to:
>atmosphere is massively inferior
>many new creatures are very bland, changes to existing creatures make them look less interesting
>tone is completely lost, even the narrator sounds bored
>making the horned reaper a SUPER SPECIAL OC DONUT STEAL type god unit that you're in service to makes it feel like some capeshit story

According to reviews, it's sort of okay, if you're a fan of the genre, but not really a true spiritual successor. A 7-ish/10 game, you buy the ultimate edition (with all the expansions) when on sale.

DK2 is still a fun game, but aside from the graphics (I'm very much NOT a fan of the original's pixelsoup where literally everything is just some gross shade of brown) I can't think of anything that the sequel actually does better than the original.

I think the financial side might be better than in DK1.
In 1, you have missions where, if you run out of minable ore (and there are no gem patches on the map), you're fucked. Workshop economy doesn't work 100% prior to boulder traps becoming available, and each trap only sells for 1000 gold. Whereas in 2 you have the casino (admittedly it makes your creatures angry), and spells only cost mana, not gold.

Early 3D was pretty much always horrible. Even the original in D3D mode looks worse as a whole despite becoming sharper and more high-definition. The changes that made everything less monstruous and more into evil humans with some monsters on the side are also not great. Traps are overall worse too. Some fun spells are gone.
I do like the introduction of mana and destructible portals. And some of the new spells and mosnters/heroes.

I was really disappointed when I tried these games thinking they had a novel and original concept, only to find out they were just standard RTS campaigns with a coat of fantasy paint.
