This is somewhat true, but new enemies and tech do keep things fresh. Mission types are definitely a weakness in the franchise

The point is you can plan and play to increase your overall average to be higher. Yes you can get screwed over by chance but those moments when you overcome extreme odds and pull through are super fun.

The new x-coms and xenonauts games are leagues better than the clunky mess of the old ones. A lot of people are deluded by nostalgia.
