Had fun getting the Mandala cheevo, probably actually the most fun of the new governments. I tried to do a run where I'd convert all of Japan to Confucianism as the Kong (Confucius' family) but because the Yamato don't know how to breed I ended up having a relative inherit the throne of Japan which stops me becoming Shogun even after taking over the regency as a Soryo. As an aside, I think I like SEA girls.

The treasury mechanic seems to be a scam for the top ruler.
Tried playing an admin empire and my income is completely fucked if I want to maintain a decent army, need the entire left stewardship tree just to not go broke.

Yeah, you can. I think you could probably do Hegemony India. I controlled basically everything not in China / India (including the Phillipines, Taiwan and Ryukyu but not Japan) at the top end directly or through vassals and wasn't really managing them too well plus I had a few vassals in the Dravidian lands of India and was spilling into Tibet. I did sometimes have to stop and give out Kingdoms or transfer vassals but I still had tons of Ducal/Count vassals (because I didn't really need to use making Duchies for Prestige). You'd probably just need some big Kings. I was going to do Hegemon myself but I started on one of the Indonesian Islands and couldn't be bothered waiting for troops to raise and didn't want to move my Capital out of my Temple Complex. It shouldn't be an issue with some.

Are Accolades and Legends worth it? Never bothered with either mechanic.

Legends are good because of the extra benefits from completing them (i.e. special buildings, flipping tons of provinces to your religion, free subjugation CBs, claims with specific ones, etc) and the Legitimacy can be really good, especially when you're trying to build it up for example for the Mandala governments. Accolades are strong but need too much micromanagement and you can just beat the AI with men at arms counter anyway.

How come a horselord was able to attack one of my vassals without calling me into the war? There is a protect vassal interaction, but it needs the war to last 3 years (which it won't). Also, I have a truce with him from the war. I conquered the province from him, so I can't attack him that way either.

I think it should also give you access to activities/decisions of both faiths and also make all holy sites applicable for pilgrimage.
E.g.
If you had an islamic faith that was syncretic with an Indian faith Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem + Indian holy sites should all be available pilgrimage targets.
For the decisions, if you made a Christian faith that was Syncretic with Zoroastrianism you should have the ability to declare yourself Sashoyant.
For activities, you can use both faiths festivals or celebrations or funerals and the like.

It would actually make syncretic religions interesting, unique and fun to play and make up for the massive downside of losing a tenant.

I had some fun playing as Stormwind during the Dark Horde invasion. I conquered the southern half of the Eastern Kingdoms and installed culturally and religiously human half breeds from all the major dynasties like Cho’gall, Frostwolf, Shadowmoon, Blackhand, etc. I installed Lothar in Black Morass. I also managed to seduce a few of the dragon aspects.
Doing the Frostwolf migration and taking one of the other options like Northrend or Dun Morogh could be interesting but last I tried it was pretty barebones and it wasn’t really feasible to survive.
Two more playthrough, again not a ton of flavor but they just seem interesting from an RP perspective. The first, playing the Blood Trolls in Zand’alar and taking over, AND shifting from gay old god worship to the Zul’gurub blood god worship. And finally playing as the Shadow Trolls in Hyjal and fighting the remnant satyrs and lesser demons. I like taking demon concubines and converting to the demon religion.
The racial blending system in the WC mod is crazy impressive and I always find myself heavily utilizing it in all my campaigns.

The actual answer is that this is the new border wars mechanic, which is supposed to make it so that large realms or empire-tier titles can slowly be chipped away at the borders instead of calling the entire might of the Byzantine army every time a small border county is attacked. Basically an anti-blob mechanic.

Theoretically, it's supposed to make it so that making your border provinces militarized is a better idea, as well as trying to not have isolated counties and instead having the entire duchy. Practically, it just means big realms trade counties every so many years since there's no check that the attacker also isn't an empire or large realm. It'd be better if it was limited to counts/dukes fighting each other.

FWIW, I just booted up in debug mode, put in "add_realm_law_skip_effects japanese_bureaucracy_3", and let the game run while controlling the Super Tenno and not a single vassal has swapped to Souryou by 882
there's also a requirement placed upon Ritsuryou blocking the Souryou decision if the current top liege has Centralized Governance (tier 4 law/japanese_bureaucracy_3) but if there's some sneaky bug then that wouldn't amount to much
also tried it in a separate run with similar cheats slapped on after making three vassals go Souryou. No one else swapped, one of the Souryou survived a "no u" gangbang from nearby Ritsuryou, another took a county off a Ritsuryou via aggressive war despite the crown law stating non-administrative vassals are blocked from declaring war so IDK what's up with that one. The third Souryou sat on his hands and no one bullied him, though the house bloc he was leading either kicked him out or imploded from lack of cohesion.
I assume it's the same if you enact the maximum law as Kampaku as opposed to an installed Tenno, but I gotta do other stuff.

No the bug is because of the way ethnicities are weighted, most European cultures have their ethnicities set to 100 while non-European cultures have theirs set to 10. The culture hybridization mechanic just merges the ethnicities of the two cultures so the non-European ethnicities will only have a 10/110 chance to appear.

Concubines - yes, they're religion based. You can usually have up to 3, but the Emperor can have 20 (and set them aside whenever). I advise modding out the child cap if you ever become Hegemon, just for fun. Eunuchs you have to demand your neighbours give you them as tribute.

But concubines didn't count towards that so you could cycle them for more and more and yet more brats. 62 is a very rough and very conservative number I came up with, realistically it's probably 2-3x that with 20 concubines and 4 wives.

Probably the easiest option would be to marry yourself or your heir to the royal family, wait for (or expedite) the emperor's death, then start a claimant faction to turn that royal your married into the empress. From there you can wait for your dynasty to take the throne when the empress dies, or you can kill her and dynasty-claim the throne from your son/grandson to get it right away.

Really the more I think about it, the harder it is to do it in any reasonable amount of time.
Secretary is a diarch, who could overthrow if you somehow get all the way up to max power, which is beyond hard to do due to how unreliable it is.
Getting the dynastic cycle to division is "the way it is meant to be taken over", but getting there in the first place is ridiculous due to countless factors keeping it stable. The only, somewhat reliable way to achieve division that I have found is to repeatedly assassinate the emperor until an heir has 0 legitimacy, which does cause the hegemony title to instantly shatter. That does of course not account for the fact that you must now conquer all of China without you being a decent commander or steward who has the tools to do so easily.
Meanwhile, an outside ruler can just instantly declare war for the entire title in one go during the tension era, or push China towards tension with constant wars.

In some ways it's better, in others it's worse. Culture mechanics are legit cool and a definite upgrade. Military, Feudalism, Religion is worse. There are also features that have been added over timer that are either broken and OP or just dumb. Struggles are cool one paper, but you're usually at the whim of the AI and have to build to a specific outcome, if you don't get what you want, tough shit, you have to wait for it to loop back. Admin (byzantine) gov is cool because now you have unhanded families that can take part in the internal politics, but with very little effort, you make insane amounts of money, have a massive army and can technically unlock primogeniture many centuries before unlocking the tech itself, basically, its very overpowered. Adventurers (unhanded characters) are finally here. But they can raise and maintain massive men-at-arms with no real monetary drawback, making them very overpowered. I think with a strong hook you can, you never get one through most contracts though. Maybe if you find a strong secret through intrigue missions? But I haven’t gotten something like that. It made my Japan way more playable and fun. Intra-duchy conflicts for domination still happen (likely as a faction conflict) and might involve some other allied counties abroad as well, but no more constant inter-duchy free for all.

Also, holy fuck Japan has a lot of earthquakes. In ~70 years I got 3 severe quakes, decimating my local dynasty, with two hitting the exact same spot. Adding it together with the insane "regular" plague spawn is no joke.

In practice this means if a vassal attacks another vassal, you legit get pulled into the war yourself if you are part of the defending bloc which can lead you to fighting a perpetual civil war practically every year against half your vassals. You're saying shit like have high opinion or punish vassals better legit does not matter. You can have 100 opinion for every single vassal in your realm, 100 dread, have quite literally executed entire families who declared war previously, and they will keep continuing to declare war on each other because the soryo system without a shogun is supposed to represent the constant civil war japan faced until the shogun took over and put a stop to it, which the game tries and fails to do legit because that line of code is broken despite it also telling you in the tooltip it does.

There are 5 (7) set Hegemonies in the game, China, India (you have to be in the Indian Religious Group and have your capital in Inda and rule all of India), The Roman Empire (which can be split into Eastern and Western Roman Empires, both are Hegemonies, you need to be the HRE or Byzantium or Italia and take the Unite Italia decision and control some places across the Empire), Land of Islam (I assume you have to be a Muslim religious head, you have to control a high % of Islamic provinces worldwide so it's easier in earlier start dates) and the Khaganate (which you get from reforming the Great Khaganate as Greatest of Khans)

China's mechanics are unique, more than likely you will be Admin/Feudal as Rome, Clan as Islamic World, Nomadic as the Khaganate and Feudal as India anyway so it wouldn't matter. All Meritocratic nations do get some of China's though

Over time the UI has become intrusive as fuck. Your busy waging war and social events (hunt/feast) will pop up but will no longer fuck off once you've chosen one of the dialog options. Annoying as fuck.

actually, holy fuck. Great project fund allocation, but for feasts/tournaments/hunts. Imagine being able to just plan that shit well ahead of time and being able to allocate funds whenever the hell you felt like it, or let a vassal pay for it for little bonuses for themselves. Could plan shit well in advance and not get locked up in some shitty window for 6 months waiting for count cockbum to slowly trudge through the alps, just instant travel-to-event and boom it's popping off without any useless fucking preamble

Yeah these are great ideas. Also repetitiveness is a problem. They should have had fun little mini games. Like Defender of the Crown had back in the day. You could raid your neighbors it had a little sword fighting mini game, Contests - a jousting mini game. fun as fuck.

It’s funny clicking the government map mode and see everyone have their own unique government then you scroll over India and assume you have some nonexistent Indian dlc turned off by accident or something

You think it would be better if there were like, 50 more possible events in the feast event pool instead of the effectively 10-odd there are now? I've considered making a mod after seeing the peacock prank and fighting thirst events in every single one of my feasts (even in cultures where it didn't make any sense). I played them, just a warning if you play Ironman usurping Japan just makes you the Ten'oh's bitch (it made me the Kampaku) so best to make your own Empire. The mechanics in Japan are still pretty buggy as well, when you take land you end up with Soryo/Ritsuryo rulers as your vassals and they can be in House Blocs across borders.

Anybody know of religious mods that don't require me to have three holy sites to be able to reform a religion?
I've played some mods that basically let you make your own holy sites but they were part of larger total conversion mods (After the End, Elder Kings {both nice mods})
