I thought it was long since established that Paradox games are dogshit on release, and there's literally no reason to buy them until they're like years into development and they go on sale with all the major DLC included for like 50% off.
Is there a single good reason why people are actually buying this right now? The streams I've watched look like it's not even finished yet.
I remember when I first bought EU4 I forgot to activate all the DLC and it was terrible then I went back and activated them and it became an actually enjoyable experience. That's exactly what's going to happen in this game guys.
Fuck V3 is still shite despite being a few years old. CK3 is only just now rounding the corner of being on CK2's level which means only in the last year or so would I even consider buying it (I still haven't)

Like I still think the release itself is going to be a trainwreck due to lack of performance and polish, but the core mechanics seem pretty solid and more enjoyable for my personal playstyle then EU4 ever was no matter how many dlc you had.

If I get bored if it, I'd rather it be now when I'm getting 100% of the experience rather than in 3 years time with £200 worth of DLC.
I bought hoi4 at launch and got >1k hours of fun out of it over the years. Several expansions have massively improved the game (particularly NSB's supply system) but I didn't feel like it was missing when I first played it.
I got CK3 at launch and dropped it after ~80 hours. It was a shit game but I might have liked it, and it seemed like a reasonable gamble.
I skipped vic3 because I knew I wouldn't like it, even before playing the leaked build. It was and remains a shit game with shit systems for people who never grew out of roblox tycoon games.

At the moment, the state of the game is fairly obvious with the ridiculous amount of footage that's available from it. Given that, I think it's absolutely sufficient to make an informed purchase either way.

I think you're entirely right there, and I think pre-ordering games is always a bit silly even if someone is really sure it's going to be good, even if I'm a bit of a cheapskate in general. I don't think this part is all that big of a problem for these kinds of games. For some immersive story experience or something I'd agree but as long as you're not settings unrealistically high expectations for the game it shouldn't be that big of a problem for a sandbox game like this. Eu5 looks different because it's just so much more complex than the other games. From watching videos it looks like it takes the best elements from Eu4, Vic2, and IR, and then takes away some of their flaws. And there's such a huge amount of content on the game already that I'm confident enough to be optimistic without any reservations, even if the release build is probably going to be a bit of a mess. The fact that many Eu4 youtubers have invested hundreds of hours into playing builds that are in all likelihood less stable than it will be on release is a very promising sign.

the eternal problem with Paradox games is that countries are too stable in the hands of a player
once you get everything optimized you can just cruise and blob until the end of the game, you don't have to deal with major setbacks, periods of instability or stagnation, and so on
that's why the endgame is always lame, there's nothing that can happen that you won't be prepared for so they have to resort to throwing a roided-out Ottoman Empire at you instead

The point I was trying to make is resolving a single conflict could take 100 years. In order to unify the British Isles I would need to undertake at least one conflict with similar complexity (Scottland) along with 2 or 3 minimum conflicts with less complexity (Wales and Eire)
This is in addition to (likely) losing all of your continental holdings in the peace deal to surrender the HYW. BG3 does a bit to improve it. But if we're talking base 5E it's abysmal all the way up and down from cgen options to combat options.
But it manages to try it's best to keep as much awkwardness and bloat as any 3.x system as it can while having no choices so it's still a chore.

5e is outdown in complexity and options by practically anything that tries to do that, and outdown in elegence, simplicity and ease of play by any lighter system. There is literally never a time where I'd pull out 5E if I was forming a game because I've played enough games that no matter what the group wants to play something else will be better for our needs.

So, here is the first time in well over a decade Paradox has made the mistake of releasing a game without Loonix support. The last time was V2 which runs but not perfectly and the time before that it didn't run at all.
If we're judging them based on their track record it seems to me the best case scenario is the game launches and crashes more often than windows and doesn't have all the same features as windows or it doesn't launch at all.
Seems users report performce via proton on V3 is severely impacted and much worse than native.

Jesus Christ eu4 was released in 2013. I'm fucking old. Anyway it was fun on release, the demo build was cool you could mod it and basically play the whole game early. Ck2 old gods dlc was kino too on release, another thing people on gsg unlocked early. Hoi4 was fine on release, ck3 a bit mid and Vicky 3 was just shit on release.

Royal Court is so shit it pisses me off. The court lags for whatever reason when you enter it and is not fun to deal with. Furthermore, they require you to have that dlc to get something as simple as cultural hybridization. Nearly every other dlc is some shitty event pack.
