Because it's a stale genre dealing with a number of core issues, mostly repetitiveness and the tension between invested time vs time to failure.
I remember playing they are billions up to that missions in OP's screenshot. It was fun at first, but even at max speed, it was taking a ton of time to wait for hordes. Then this one hits, and I think it takes, at bare minimum, 4 real-time hours to complete, of which 3h55 will be mostly uneventful, linear build-up. If I lose this map, it's going to be in the last 5 minutes, meaning if I made a mistake, I wasted 3h55 of boredom, and I'll have to redo this 3h55 of boredom to do better in the eventful 5 minutes.
It's a shit feeling. That, and the game was stale between game, new tech unlocked too slowly, everything was always the same.
