My first Naples run is going well. Just build buildings in your capital, RGOs outside the capital, automate trade but still pay attention to it so you can get an idea of what it's doing. When you take all of Sicily you get an event to form two sicilies which gives you cores on all of Sicily. If Sicily has powerful allies, try to use diplomacy to break their alliances.

Bear witness to His Majesty William IV, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and of France and the Iberian Crowns of Portugal and Castile; Grand Duke of Savoy; Duke of Normandy, Flanders, Aquitaine and Hainaut; Lord of Iceland and manifold other locales; Defender of the Faith and Most Righteous Sovereign.

Honestly I'm kinda on the verge of giving up this run because I got these unions entirely by accident and they've made the game trivial. I won the Hundred Year's War on purpose, and I got Savoy on purpose also. But Castile was in a union with Portugal and they fell into my lap entirely unintentionally, and now that I have both there's just not a force in the world that could ever beat me.

Your "TRADER" is trying to sell books
at a shit price
so he demands paper
so he imports a lot of paper to meet the demand
to sell books
>at a shit price
so you look at the UI, see a big green plus near paper and build it
and you meet the demand
but the demand was only to shut out the --------- for obtaining paper
for books
you sell
at a shit price
meaning the demand couldve been solved by shutting down unprofitable buildings
which I dont know how the UI accounts for directly

Gypsy migrations should be a situation, they'd settle as tribesmen that give no taxes and raise unrest, your options would be to either try and forcibly settle and integrate them as subjects, or expel them to your neighbours.

I've found that Clergy privileges which give them increased happiness are almost always worth it, because the happier your clergy is the faster you research. If you're not playing Catholic it's also probably worth it to tax them minimally so they will remain very happy and you'll get quicker tech.

The right of arms/local militias one for the peasants is also super good. Increased levy size and, critically, increased peasant combat ability for levies. It can let you punch against your weight early when you need it most. Just remember to revoke it when you get standing armies to keep your market's weapons demands at a rational level.

Never give anything to the nobility, at least not until you've totally broken them. They're monstrous to deal with if they have any more power than they start with.

Finally, like 2/3 of the burgher privileges are insanely good. Anything that gives centralization is a priority, but they've got a bunch of great stuff. By endgame I think your two most powerful estates should be Crown followed by Burghers.

"There's barely any tin RGO in the Americas, which makes shipbuilding impossible. Colonization needs tools and medicaments, but countries in poorer markets cannot acquire herbs at all, so they can't colonize as fast. In vic3, there are fall back production methods that use cheap and easily available goods such as wood, but in EU5 there are no fall back PMs, and in EU5 every location only has one resource. This traps small nations in key-goods shortages and makes them unplayable"

So trying to understand the economy stuff and how to make the most of it beyond just clicking the most profitable trade after fiddling around for a bit
>in a vacuum building more supply doesn't do much since prices will just adjust accordingly, demand is king
>production of a good will let you squeeze more money out than the individual demands of both input and output goods, but most of that will go to the tax base of the raw RGOs once prices adjust
>government buildings with upkeep are actually a net positive for the economy because of the extra demand produced, as long as you have the controll and tax rates to benefit from it
>trade has the threefold effect of increasing demand in the exporting location (and so raising the tax base of the producers), decreasing demand in the target location (good if you have lots of consumers for production, bad if you have lots of producers) and generating some extra money on the side
>burgers and other nations being able to trade means that things get complicated in practice even with what I wrote above and there's no easy way to calculate the long-term profit from a particular decision without considering broader market dynamics
Am I starting to get the right idea?

All sounds right to me. Currently I'm trying to understand more finely when to transition from rural settlements. It's not just cash, there's a lot of good literacy buildings that rural settlements can't access. And while you do take a population growth hit, making decent population centers cities will encourage migration from the areas around to those cities, which is actually much faster growth overall. Of course if you go too far you might de-populate the countryside and not have enough workers.

Hard ai is literealy an improvement on all front by making ai nations
>more stable
>have more income
>build more buildings/rgo
>field a bigger army
>be more aggresive due to bigger army and economy
>be less prone to bankruptcy spirals

Do you need granaries in the province to be able to store the food to get the benefit? Is there some critical level of food surplus which is best for pop growth? Is it market-based or province-based?

My most recent game was an England which controlled all of England, Wales, the two southern Scottish provinces and Flanders/Picardy and I have less population than you do 100 years further in. I’m playing as a German county and managed to seize two more counties in a war right in may of year 1, and immediately my lands start hemorrhaging pops.

I’ve tried to go back to the save multiple times and in ever case half my population is gone in a 2 years….

It keeps giving migration events with “province is starving”, but I look at each county and they all have a food surplus.

Should be pretty easy before you mass build them. It's a 33% multiplier to the base crown power of whatever all the pops in your towns and cities are giving you. Depends on the make-up of your country but town/cities are probably anywhere from 25-50% of your population so that portion gets the multiplier. It's worth building, but they're expensive so you don't have to tech to them fast.

every single location in a province uses the same food stockpile
so ideally you would want to have a bunch of rural provinces who gain a flat 0.1% from being rural, and build a bunch of granaries and villages to get the bonus as high as possible (although you may want to divert your resources to build a proper economy first)

Also much of the Chinese resources, climate, culture, and language choices are just completely wrong. For example, the almost complete lack of silk, iron, and coal in all of China.

also related, but how does embargoing work if I'm not a market leader? I think it counts your advantage at the market they are importing into, so you can spend advantage to import into a high advantage market
You should go to the market page and hit the countries tab to see a list of countries, then sort by trade advantage. I assume you need more in your home market to do that? not sure lol

Made a number of mistakes during this war (mainly trying to assault a castle in Sienna after 180 days of Status Quo and attacking an army of Aragon who I marginally outnumbered but choosing poor terrain and having a slightly worse commander)
I ended up having to peace out when Aragon landed another 10K professional troops and my allies were just wandering around. If Florence had just marched down to Sicily and sat on Palemmu I could have at least formed 2 Sicilies but I did get a number of new Italian city states as vassals and only having to pay some gold seems like the best way to 'lose' this war.
Mercenaries were totally useless (500 gold for 200 soldiers!) and I cannot compete with Aragon again unless I either get a massive navy and stop them from landing troops, or get the professional army tech they seem to have.
Anyways the Black Death is coming so I'm just gonna try and build up my infrastructure a bit more but quite disappointing I couldn't reclaim my rightful title as King of BOTH Sicillies...
Oh yeah I'm still excomunicated too. Maybe I can get that fixed.
Also I have 30+ prestige rn from the peace deals I signed with the Italians. I already spent 20 to change my culture to Italian. Is there anything else cool I can spend it on?

If you're looking at it simplistically. Poland was a much more developed nation with a much stronger economy, more uniform demography and religion, and MUCH stronger diplomatic ties. This is not even mentioning the reality that, at the time of the union, Lithuania was still only really toying with Christianity and had not really made a firm break with paganism, whereas Poland was part of the virtually monolithic Catholic community and would have taken mass affront to Lithuania receiving seniority. Lithuania having larger armies (and it's debatable if they even had that) or more land does not make it stronger. Poland was unambiguously the more desirable crown of the two, and the one capable of more firmly projecting power.

colonies need more work as well, they're basically completely dependent on maritime advantage for control between islands since the terrain is jungles and there are no roads. This is fine, but maritime advantage is mostly generated by natural harbors and ports however you have zero control over what location is chosen as the colonial capital so it randomly chose the location with zero harbor capability instead of the location with 50 harbor capability, meaning control is fucked.

Because you're not the primary participant in the war, you're an ally of England. The positive warscore is England's score over them. When you're the secondary participant, you can only gain warscore from occupations and blockades, not battles. So since all of the war's positive warscore is coming from defender ticks and battles, you have no independent warscore. You can't try to enforce any kind of peace unless France becomes totally exhausted of the war (where you may be able to get a white peace) or you occupy or blockade land (and can thus maybe try to enforce some demands).

But at the same time, when England peaces out if you occupy some of the lands you want there's a really good chance they'll give them to you as a reward for your participation.

HELP
HOW DO I INTO FISHING VILLAGES

I'm playing Scotland pre-1400. I want to eventually colonize places. To do that, I need to explore. To explore, I need sailors and money
To get sailors, I can either wait and built later buildings like Docks, which I haven't researched and are decades down the line. Or I build Wharfs or Fishing Villages.
Wharfs seem like early game places to build ships, okay, they give some minor buffs and sailors per month, but they cost like 0.3 ducats per month in maintenance
Fishing Villages give sailors per month, but they all LOSE MONEY. They were losing 0.3 ducats per month, but forcing mass exports of fish with manual trade dropped that to "only" losing 0.1 ducats per month. My fishing villages also seem to prefer using the crafting recipe of salt+ivory=fish, rather than salt+tools=fish. The ivory doesn't seem to be costing them anything?

>question 1
Is there any way to make fishing villages profitable? I know Fish can be made "for free" with RGOs, but goddamn, I want my sailors
Would conquering Iceland to access Ivory be a good idea?
>question 2
If I make someone my vassal, does their RGO output enter my market? Does my nation get access to it? Does it matter if it's a fief or a vassal? Or should I just directly annex the ivory provinces? I know it'll be 1000 miles away and I'll get no tax income, but it will still directly go to my market... Right?
>question 3
how do you guys get your sailors?
>question 4
what the fuck is up with fish
if you mass upgrade their RGOs you could flood the market with fish and make fishing villages even more unprofitable?
is there some later game recipe crafting product thing that uses fish?

It's infinitely more profitable to build the combination of dock/wharf/protected harbor in your coastal locations to get sailors, especially as Scotland. You need to get control to your locations, and how you do that with your dogshit topography is naval proximity. With what money you have you should be building up your economy in prep for the next age, make sure you have a town in all your provinces with good natural harbors, and any province you want to propagate proximity in through or out of. And then just research docks and protected harbors as soon as you can and spam them in your new coastal towns. You'll not only get all the sailors you need and more, it'll also MASSIVELY increase your control and thus your state power and income, because it'll boost naval presence AND harbor capacity at the same time, both of which are critical for proximity calcs.

I don't like the way they phrase that modifier. It's 0.10, sure--out of 1. So getting 0.10 from three sources is equivalent to getting 30% of the max modifier (or at least max if you can't overcap, not sure if you can), even on a coastal location entirely unsuited for a harbor. That makes harbor capacity ridiculously useful for proximity calculations, because it's pretty easy even as early as mid Renaissance to get that 0.30.

After 7 full days with this game I still haven't had enough.
It is an absolute pleasure to be experiencing this game with all of you, my absolute lads, and the more I chew on it the more I come to the conclusion this is already the best grand strategy game of all time. I have absolutely no desire to play EU4 ever again. I may find myself playing a game of CK2 or HOI2 but for completely different reasons that are not really Grand Strategy.
I think I'll still find time for modded Medieval 2 Total War just because I enjoy the RTS battles but the actual campaign isn't really "grand strategy" either.
I think Johan actually did it. This is his Magnum Opus and he's forgiven for everything he did or didn't do over the past decade. He has fully and completely redeemed himself with this masterpiece of a game. I am overcome by joy and I can't wait to wake up again tomorrow so I can keep playing before I have to go wage slave.
10/10 game. Seriously. Best I've ever played. If you want to knock off points for the roughness around the edges or the imperfections then go ahead but just realize this game will (God willing) receive 10 years of expansions and flavor DLC. This is the most bare bones, and the worst it will ever be and I'm already giving it a 10.
I'm so lucky I never fell for the gf meme or the hustler meme or the drug meme or whatever and instead get to experience absolute and total Grand Strategy Kino
Say it with me, lads
Thank You Johan!

I got my PU junior to do unified succession law then changed my succession law after it passed, why is it saying they're leaving? Do I have to chance my succession law before it?

i will admit i was a little concerned when i saw all the posts on the steam forums asserting the game has no depth
then i actually played it and found out that it is actually quite deep, much more so than previous EU games, and everyone claiming otherwise is just an EU4 babby crying because this game requires you to use your brain to achieve most things

Has anyone playing in the HRE actually managed to get the War of Religion situation to do anything? I keep trying to join the union and then the emperor uses the remove member action and creates a truce prolonging the nothingness. It's been going on for 40 years and nothing has happened. That action shouldn't be usable over and over, or it shouldn't work past a certain time like 20 years.

do muslims (or other faiths) spread their religion to all the tiles around them by default?

With the way control works and is laid out in my country is it worth Annexing Yaroslavl in the north (borders on the 29 control province) or should I keep it as a vassal. Country is full muscovite/orthodox so full acceptance but I don't know at what control level it becomes worth to own things yourself.

Yeah. Georgia was a big part of the trade between Persia, Anatolia, and Russia. Basically how they kept alive between Russia and the Ottomans for as long as they did.

Seem to recall from one of the dev diaries there's a building muslims can build in foreign countries to convert them peacefully, like they did in Indonesia.

No, a province with 0 control still sells all its goods to the market, you just get 0% of the tax on it.
This is why trade is so powerful. Control doesn't matter at all.

It's only playable if I have GameStateTick.RenderFrameIfNeeded enabled, if I disable it the game becomes a literal slideshow while the days fly by, it's still a good idea to disable it at the beginning of the game.
