● Even in the kickstarter, one of the big selling points they emphasized was that you didn't have to fight.
● The tutorial is Toriel telling you that there's always another option besides fighting.
● After Toriel, Flowey challenges you to uphold your convictions by mocking your determination to not kill anyone.
● The very existence of the mercy mechanic is different from most other RPGs and so naturally, anyone who's played a lot of games before would be drawn into using it.
● Once first-time players beat Toriel AND Papyrus without killing anyone, I have never seen anyone give up and start attacking things.

Undyne literally says you can't escape while you're [green]. Then you get turned red by her attack and the greyed out run command is made available again next to the spare command. I agree that most people are dumb and unobservant, but most holos did the pacifist route their first time seeing the game and

However, there is one very minor aspect to going in blind that isn't really fair to people who try to go for the pacifist route their first time through in my opinion.
Ironically, it's attached to one of the most important lines in the game.
It's when you attempt to try to talk to Asgore after dying and it says, "You tell Asgore that he's killed you once before. He nods sadly." The "once" becomes "twice" and then "three times" and continues increasing until ten, at which point it changes to "too many times to count". In the Japanese version, it's simply a numerical digit that increases. The problem is that dying 11 times is a bit excessive if the player thinks that dying is the correct answer to the puzzle and the counter is the only thing that changes between runs. If I had designed it, I would've made it so that it doesn't count how many times you've died, and it would just say "once before" every time after the first death so the player isn't misled into thinking that something is changing. This happened to Azki when she played. She spent a really long time on Asgore crying and trying to find a way not to attack him.

I'll grant that I'm the only one I've ever *seen* who got stuck on that fight, but in my defense I remember reading about others who did. The only other fight I struggled on was Asgore for a similar reason to what you described, but also because I'd been half-spoiled to the point of knowing there was a pacifist route but I mistakenly thought using the 'fight' option even once would break the run... oh, and also OmegaFlowey for the same reason. I died on both fights dozens and dozens of times before I gave up and googled how to progress due to that misconception combined with paranoia LOL.
Though I think my point about the broader design and how it's still normal for people to get the neutral end first still stands, and so I don't agree that Moom didn't have the right personality for it. That's all I was trying to say.
