My mistake for not being clear. It is unlike the games that get numbers. Which is to say the older games not the recent games that appeal more to normalfags than the ojisans who watch JRPG weekends.
There is virtually no character development, all of them are the same person at the beginning as at the end despite going through what should be traumatic experiences.
The dialogue is very western as well. Every quip uses the ironic sense of sarcastic humor that doesn’t belong in a fantasy JRPG.
Its popularity in the western world is a direct consequence of how unlike it is the genre it pretends to be inspired by.
The plot itself is the best part but the execution is held back because in the west the common style is for strong plot to move the characters while JRPGs tend to have strong characters who move the plot.

The system is weird, there's an automatic queue you get a spot in, and then tickets get reserved when people put them in carts, then released in fits and starts.
