I think Rei going for a restrained look gives her an edge in a market dominated by over-the-top fantastical designs. But yeah, it's somewhat ironic that Saba became her own Gura clone, other reincarnations tried to make themselves more distinct while she just changed colors and gave herself big ears.

Mint and Dokibird are exceptions since they already streamed as these personas before they joined their corpo. Their "new" identities were already well-established with their fans. Doki's model was just very cheap and looked like some 2020 0view indie, but Mint already had an upgrade before her graduation and all in all a very high quality model to support her. After her return as Mint, she got Ayamy to update that model once again.

I really hope when Saba inevitably has her 3D concert I can go but man, that seems like its going to be harder than trying to win tickets for HoloFes.

She'd be flattered if you told her that for either statement.
That said, I personally think Dooby is a major upgrade from "generic blonde girl with no identifying features" to a thick shortstack with huge ears and a long, identifiable tail. Nimi is whatever, and Saba is... yeah probably a downgrade.


The biggest thing imo is that people who aren't artists really shouldn't be designing their own characters from the ground up. They just cram all their fetishes or tastes into something regardless whether it's cohesive or not and that kind of clashing tends to ruin it.
Nimi's design is fine, but it's not exactly anything special or distinguishable in any way. It's just a brown haired girl with ears. If she changes her hair she won't even have the tapir trunk that's vaguely hinted at in her current design.
Saba just feels like a huge mishmash of ideas thrown into one. Almost like a child designed it with all the bits and bobs everywhere, "I want this and this and this and this!" It's very childish, and knowing her it's probably intentional to maximize the loli energy. Can't say I find it appealing, though.

From what Shiori said, Holo has the artist design the model after hearing the member's voice, and then they can edit or modify the design later to an extent. I'm pretty sure the only recent holomem to design their own model was Raora, who basically copied her old model and changed the ears/tail.

Yeah, this is why I find it weird when people say Ame downgraded. Her design wasn't awful but it was fanart that really brought out its potential.

It's because so far the ex-corpos that we have seen haven't really been ones known for art, and as such, probably don't have the eye for design themselves.
When it comes to corpos, while the talent does get some amount of input on the design (from what we know at least for Hololive, they get to make general requests) but the design itself is up to the artist, who takes an information sheet to get ideas from.
This means once they go indie, they basically HAVE to give the artist they work with a mostly complete description of what they want their new character to be, which can lead to a mishmash of ideas that might not really work together or simply don't hit the mark in one way or another even if it's a very competent artist.
Nimi and Mint have designs that just mix two relatively simple concepts (ghost + maid and nurse + tapir), so their designs are pretty cohesive, I'd argue their model quality stayed the same after going indie.
For Saba, I'd say it really does feel like she wasn't exactly sure what she wanted in the design, she's supposed to be a fish but honestly the only part of her design that says "Fish" is the tail, which you won't see 99% of the time because it'll be hidden off screen, leaving only the cat ears visible.
For Rei, it helps that her design pre-indie was very simple and honestly not very good since she wasn't really a talent you were meant to focus on, and since she ended up going for a design that really is just a regular ol' human, she can get away with just having a relatively simple design.
